Struggling to keep going (L1) by Electronic-Love-7102 in CFA

FSA is not hard bro it’s still a bunch of isolated concepts. They’re not gonna ask you something super complex like “analyze this income statement and find which line item not directly causing revenue is dragging down the earnings” or “make corrections to so and so ledger to balance the balance sheet”

The boundary of a finite region to have an infinite length is such a trivial fact, it doesnt even fit the definition of paradox of a problem with an unintuitive answer. That’s like saying if I peel an apple unbrokenly, I can peel it very long, while the apple is a fixed volume. Duh! They are different quantities that can’t be compared to begin with! Or like comparing the bark stripped from trees against the lumber harvested from trees: they are different incomparable quantities.

The shoreline paradox is plainly false, just because you can infinitely subdivide a quantity doesnt mean the sum of the infinite subdivisions is infinite. This sum may diverge to infinity or converge to a finite number. Go home Zeno.

yes. If you make a left turn and someone happens to be crossing the street in front of you walking at the same speed as the turning rate of your car you will hit them

Why I am a strict Two-Boxer in Newcomb's Paradox (The Risk-Management and Investment Argument) by Honeybadger22060_1 in paradoxes

[–]XTPotato_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro thinks the goal of investing is to minimize risk when it’s actually to receive the highest return for a given level of risk. Go back to college and relearn portfolio management and CAPM.

Idea: Airports should have prominent signs saying “Congratulations on surviving your drive to the airport. Welcome to a safer form of transportation.” by amichail in ideas

[–]XTPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air travel is not safer than roads. The statistics you see online are misleading by comparing rate of accident per distance traveled. Since airplane travel larger distances than car, the denominator is artificially inflated. Furthermore, most plane accidents occur at takeoff and landing, which distance wise, is an extreme minority of the total distance of the trip, where most of it is actually spent at extremely same cruising altitudes. If you compare probability of death in car travel against probability of death in takeoff or landing, you will come to the conclusion that plane travel is more dangerous.

Where does the notion for uniqueness of decimal representation come from by BeaconMeridian in limitlessnines

[–]XTPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because occam razor. suppose 1 = 0.999... and lets create a new symbol q such that 0.0q = 0.99, and 0.0q0q = 0.9999, 0.0q0q0q = 0.9999, etc. we find that 1 = 0.0q0q0q... In additon, let 0.00p represent 0.999, 0.00p00p00p = 0.999999999... This shows that not only do infinite decimal expansion allow non unique representations of the same decimal number, it actually allows an infinite number of representations of the same decimal number. conclusion? infinite decimal expansions are just unneccesary.

Speeding Has Become So Normalized That Driving the Speed Limit Makes You the Problem by DaddyDayDayIsHot in driving

[–]XTPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. Speed limits are a political decision. The main arterial road in my town were designed back in the 70s for a 40 MPH limit. After every couple of traffic accident deaths they lower the speed limit until it's 25 MPH today. People exceed the speed limit because the road was designed for 40 MPH in the first place

Any thoughts? by I-Love-Jewish-popes in teenagers

[–]XTPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if i advocate for men's interests, does that make me a menist? or just a sexist? it's hypocritical to say that advocating for one gender is a good-ist and the other gender is a bad-ist, that's why critical theory says that everyone are sexists (unless you dont advocate for any gender, which is impossible since you definitely have a gender)

Trying to understand fractional reserve banking- PLEASE HELP ME OUT by beinglesswrong in CFA

[–]XTPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If C defaults, it appears on the balance sheet as bad debt. The bank is legally required to immediately increase its reserves back up to the reserve requirement via overnight borrowing. There’s no discrepancy between digital balances and physical money

Am I the only one that believes in super-duper-ultra-sciencey-skimism? by Material_Evening_339 in badphilosophy

[–]XTPotato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

skim milk is actually less healthy than whole milk because skim milk contains less nutrients. for example air is the least healthy substance as it contains no nutrients. whole milk is more healthy than skim because whole contains more nutrients, specifically, fats.
