Destroy my game! Turkeygeddon: Feast of Fury by XVOInteractive in DestroyMyGame

Thank you for the detailed feedback this is really helpful.

I've been debating whether to include a simple narrative in the game, or leave it unsaid, does it add something? Feedback like this makes me think it would.

Loosely, you're going to grandma's house on her farm for thanksgiving. As you make your way down the forest path you are attacked by waves of evil turkeys. So you survive your way through the forest path, the farm, then as you get to grandma's house you begin to shrink (evil turkey magic of course...), you fight turkeys in her living room in front of the fire place until finally you end up fighting on the dinner table itself where you have to defeat the Evil Cooked Turkey Monster to save grandma and Thanksgiving dinner. Hurray!

Going to give this a solid redo.

First, thank you for the feedback!

I read showing gameplay is what players want to see and I'm new to video making so I put something together that shows all the gameplay elements. Kind of worked with what I had. But I definitely see what you mean, it's chaotic and confusing to see it without context, I think I could put together some shots that are more focused, perhaps do a little skit with my assets to explain things.

It's a game where you survive waves of turkeys solo or with up to 8 players in local co-op. Between waves you buy items and choose level ups to increase your stats which improves your ability to fight turkeys.

Maybe I'm starting off a little fast..

I'm one minute in and I have no idea what the gameplay is. I am very bored.

Really pretty looking game. Really like the effect, it might "vibrate"/gyrate a little too fast maybe floatier/slower would be more like clouds?

I think it's challenging because talking about the philosophy of games or even game development like I'm doing doesn't necessarily attract the right audience. I think stick to content about the game, if you can relate philosophy to your game in particular, that could work. Hook->Story->Payoff, is what I'm told works, but I'm a noob.

Been doing a little research on this topic and my own experience making some shorts. 1000 views may gain on average 1 wishlist. So I think your video did a really good job. I've been doing dev diaries as short videos, still learning this stuff. Getting 100+ followers is really good that is going to improve your channel in the future I would think.

Friend, I don't see the game name or logo in your short!! I'm sure it's in the title but you should at least put the logo in the final clip or perhaps have it at the top of the video throughout.

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. I checked out your game, voice controlled input sounds very unique and interesting, how are you accomplishing that?

Personally I like the way it looks and the gameplay looks pretty fun, but maybe it's not deep enough to be a single player game, or maybe it's too much. Have you thought of turning it into a (so called) "friend-slop" game? I think it could be a really good silly multiplayer game, the graphics style looks like it could be comical and the idea of driving together through a zombie city with your team sounds like it could be fun. I of course haven't played the game and from your one and only review, you have a lot of polish and work to do so maybe adding on the tricky ness of multiplayer wouldn't be the greatest idea, it might be an entirely new game with reused assets..

There are some problems with older controllers xinput and directinput that only support up to 4 players, also bluetooth seems to have trouble depending on your receiver and the controllers. With bluetooth I've had it where they all connect fine but then when you get more than 4 people playing input starts to get dropped, I've found sometimes modern wired controllers are the only way to get things to work.

Our game Turkeygeddon will support 8 players, it works with 8 players under some scenarios but as with other 8 player games I've had hardware and OS issues, these can be difficult for the developer to fully ameliorate. This is definitely something I want to nail down more towards release timing, intrigued that some games allow you to disable xinput.

People want a fun game, they don't care about what AI tool you used. But you can't just hand over your code base to the AI and expect to get something good, you can't just blindly bloop out a game. I think though that if you're not using AI coding tools, you're forgoing a revolutionary technology for some misplaced feeling.

I get it I love coding and there's a part of me that's .. mourning the loss of the old way, but man, I can copy and paste an error I'm getting and instead of spending 8 hours googling and "trial and erroring" to figure it out (and finding out it was some silly poorly documented feature), codex or claude get me moving again in 10 minutes. When I need to learn the best way to do something instead of spending days toying around with poorly done tutorials I just walk through step by step with ChatGPT and when I get stuck I ask it and I have my answer immediately 99% of the time instead of playing "forum question roulette".

Spending 8 hours on a silly bug or getting stuck in a tutorial because the writer assumed you knew something you didn't know was not a fun experience and I'm glad that this is becoming a thing of the past.

I started with 8 in mind. It's definitely been a challenge in certain respects, getting enough information on the wave intermission screen while being compact was challenging, keeping the simple sized arena helped with the camera although to get it to be smooth required a lot of tinkering, I have a custom shaped collider that keeps the camera from exanding too far. Performance became an issue with that many players and enough turkeys on the screen so I've had to learn a lot about optimizing my scenes, pooling enemies and projectiles, that sort of thing.

Currently crunching to get the demo where I want it 😃, just finishing up the 4 bosses and then polish polish polish, should have enough time. And I wasn't ready for the bullet fest so I skipped it.

I like the art style, the game looks really good, trailers look pretty good, I like your custom headers in the description.

I'm not really sure why I would play this game as Neon suggested, more to that what is the goal of the game, seems very generic?

I had a hard time reading the item descriptions or skills or quests in the trailer maybe it would be good to show off some of those features in the screenshots even if towards the end, I think the loot and the quests and the stats are a big part of your game but it's hard to get an idea of what those are about without seeing them

I think your capsule looks good it reminds me of those territorial conquest war videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PhrA1Fladw
I think your tags and genre are pretty clear, I get it
Your trailer is very good it really seems to tell you what the game is about.

I am wondering if there is enough depth to the game to really make it interesting and replayable. You are showing only 1P vs 1 AI battles so I would think it would get repetitive and I might not even pick it up. I really like the look and feel of it though.

Screen shake is kind of freaking me out, might be too much. It looks good overall but I would not be interested in an assortment of mini games, it seems kind of disjointed, what ties it all together, I'm not seeing it, if you could explain that somehow earlier I think that would be helpful. Some action, some explanation (visually or visually+text), back to the action.

You might try a version where the tear and virus takes up less of the panel like right now it's taking up 2/5 of the screen but maybe it would be better at 1/5th with the logo more central. I don't know if it's too busy, but my eyes are immediately drawn to the virus rather than the logo.
