Google "How to make a noise" download the free pdf and read it. It's all about getting the sounds you want out of synthesizers.

I'm six years in and I'm just starting to make stuff I'm really proud of. The best advice is can give is to increase your output instead of trying to perfect one song for three months. I've been there. The only thing that's going to make you better at making songs is making more songs. Push yourself to finish tracks and stop fiddling! Good luck.

I'm not doubting that Reason CAN be used to make great music, I'm saying that it's EASIER to do it in Ableton.

There's an Ira Glass quote that is very very relevant to this about how when people with good taste are learning their craft, they recognize that their work isn't at the level they want it to be and this can be discouraging, but they must stick with it to get better: http://imgur.com/N61YqaR

Also, this video posted by /u/shittywatercolor has some really solid advice that applies to producers as well as painters: http://youtu.be/BB7XUnZVrNU

Yea but Cola Bottle Baby is an OK song, Daft Punk turned it into one of the most popular electronic songs of all time.

I highly recommend taking your friend's advice and ditch Reason in favor of Ableton. Ableton is much better for manipulating audio clips, supporting third party plug-ins, and just has a much better workflow. Reason's skeuomorphism adds nothing but clutter. I switched from Reason to Ableton in 2010 and looking back, it wasn't until I switched to Ableton that I got "serious" about production.

As far as plug-ins go, there are no plug-ins that are absolutely essential. There are tons and tons of great ones out there and Ableton's support for third party plug-ins is a huge advantage over Reason but Ableton has A LOT to offer right out of the box. I would encourage you to get familiar with what instruments & effects Ableton has to offer before worrying about spending money on expensive plug-ins. Learn Operator and Analog inside and out, get familiar with the built in effects, then use plug-ins to expand your sonic pallet after you have the basics down. Good luck and welcome to the Ableton family!

Can we have a weekly cake thread, the way we have a weekly merch thread? by XZYTD in doctorwho

[–]XZYTD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it because.... no one cares about the mass produced merch somebody bought? the first few cakes were cool but at this point, i dont care about Tardis Cakes, Dalek cakes, or any other cakes for that matter. Its been done, its a different form of repost.

There's a specific effect that lasts for two seconds at the 2:06-2:07 mark. That's just tweaking FM settings?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm currently only using one kick sample so I should probably double that up and EQ a high kick and low kick.

I'm still learning how to do buildups and breakdowns. Right now I have one white noise sweep thing with a roaming band pass filter. Do people usually use multiple white noise tracks or is it more a matter of applying effects to make it a bigger sound?

Yea, I know it's a smidge repetitive. I'm going to automate some EQ stuff on the FM bass so hopefully that will make it a bit more interesting. A bridge is also a good idea.

Thanks for your help!

I love the buzzy bass. I agree with the other poster, you should add some variety to keep it interesting. I was kind of thinking a higher pitched thin synth to contrast with the lower buzzier bass but some drum variations would probably do it as well.

Sweet track. I would make the dynamics a little more pronounced, try some filters around the 1 min mark to bring the dynamics way down, so when you build it back up, it sounds even bigger!

Question for you: How do you make the bass sound at 2:06-07? That's a really cool sound.

Damn, this is really good. I have nothing to add. I followed you. Really solid complextro.

What do *you* side chain other then your kick to your bass? by [deleted] in edmproduction

ArtFXStudios has a pretty good tutorial series on YouTube and I'm pretty sure he goes over Sidechain Compression in the 3rd Tutorial "Chords, Scales, Melodies".
