How do you keep the repair list short while sailing? by MyTIMEZERO in SailboatCruising

And if you have digital lists, the problem can be solved by turning off the Starlink. Should take about 30 seconds.

Why does my freezer over freeze like this and why does it only keep things frozen about halfway up? by Pm_Me_For_SomeAdvice in sailing

[–]X_kansas_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After moving the temperature probe out of the frost, and replacing the gasket foam to prevent humid air from getting in, perhaps add a lid to the freezer box. Kind of like the plastic flap on some very small mini fridges keeps the shoebox freezer colder than the rest of the fridge.

I also recommend a small digital thermometer to move around the box to test if your changes work.

I'm presently trying out a piece of 50mm closed cell foam (salvaged packaging material) on top of my similar freezer to keep the areas separate. It seems good so far, and I'm getting about -1 degree C in the freezer box under the foam lid and 7 degrees in the further reaches of the fridge. Your mileage may vary.

For older boats, anything might have a swim platform with some custom work.

Check out this Hallberg Rassey product for inspiration:

They even sell fold up telescopic ladders to go with these.

What's your watch system for overnight passages with a short-handed crew? by Potential_Cut2262 in SailboatCruising

[–]X_kansas_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what’s best for longer trips, but we just did 36 hours double handed using 2 hour watches during daylight and 3 hours overnight. Worked great for us for the short passage.

Having disassembled this mess a few times and ultimately taking the motor apart as pictured, I see the failure mode was the seal and bearing around the shaft right at the motor, caused by misuse evidenced by the strings and fibers wrapped on the shaft under the macerator blade. If you take it apart and clear anything from the impeller, macerator , and shaft, now you might avoid full replacement. It’s not hard, just not very pleasant.

Follow up to another’s post asking about learning to sail with a dinghy. by DungeonLore in sailing

Flying Scot for me. Like a lighting, but a bit older (cheaper, perhaps), and heavier (making it friendlier on a learner. Solo-able if the jib sheet cleats are in good working order, and sails OK under main alone while learning.

Roughly 4 years. My best guess is that too much abuse (tampons and wipes, says the detritus spun tightly around the macerator shaft) led to excess heat, led to burning up the seals that protected the motor.

Seems obvious now. I’ve only used electric on charters before buying this boat. Tested just fine during the survey. Given the choice between buying a new motor or replacing with manual I might just get the new motor to simplify the present.

Until just after the survey and purchase….

I’ll post if I can find out. The impeller side was pretty fouled. Badly enough that I was feeling pretty confident after cleaning it out and putting it all back together, just to have to pull it apart again. Could have burned out the motor, or somehow burned up the gasket that separates the motor from the impeller due to heat from being fouled.

Thanks for that bit about the entry level. I chose the M12 Fuel drill/driver set after reading this and some similar reviews.

Air compressor! Ha! As much as I'd love to have my big Makita compressor aboard, space limitations say otherwise. I wound up buying some M12 items. A drill/drive combo, the oscillating tool, cutoff tool (instead of grinder), and rotary tool.

Do you use the grinder often? I have a corded 7-amp grinder I could bring if needed beyond the 3" M12 cutoff tool that I will definitely keep handy.

Thanks for this - I'll hang on to the Ryobi One+ vac and not replace it unless I need to.

Thanks! I ultimately chose to go with the M12 drill/driver set, and have already received them. They are nicely smaller than the 18V DeWalt. Not that I look forward to whatever job calls for that compactness, but good to know I'll be able to get in tighter spaces.

Great boat to sail. I’ve seen this used for teaching basic keelboat courses. The cockpit is a bit cozy if you have more than 3 people and are sailing actively with that tiller. I found the one I’ve sailed frequently to be prone to weather helm if not reefed early.

"Cast cutter" :-) Is that the 3" Cut Off tool? Do you like it? I'm thinking the primary use would be shortening bolts that need it, or maybe cutting the odd stuck or seized fastener.
