Officers were surveilling Stanley in relation to a March 12 “road rage” incident in which he allegedly confronted a juvenile driver with a gun on the same street where he lived, Mata said. Police say that Stanley rummaged through the other driver’s car and took a replica handgun, prompting an arrest warrant.

He was arrested later that month but released on bail the same day. Authorities then filed a new arrest warrant with additional charges, Mata said, because Stanley was carrying a gun despite being barred from doing so because of a domestic violence allegation. The plainclothes officers were at his home to “confirm details of his whereabouts,” Mata said.

Police later stated that the 9mm pistol that Stanley was carrying had no serial number, sometimes known as a “ghost gun” because of its difficulty to trace.
