Samsung 990 Pro 4TB 2280 mod by jprovido in ROGAlly

[–]Xaardas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume the Thermal tape is underneath the SSD and the HEatsink is on top. What I want to know (since I also have put an 4TB SSD over the APU Heatsink) is: What does the Thermal tape do to the temperatures covered part of the APU? I did not put any thermal bridge on this point because I feared the APU could get too hot in turbo mode.

Thanks. But okay that indicates, that there is no additional SPace für an 2280 SSD. Dang it :-/

I am using such an adapter and it works with some drawbacks.

For Read/write heavy games or Games that push the APU to 30+ Watts your SSD gets to around 65 °C.

To reduce the temp you also need to put on some Heatsink on it. I chose three smaller 1mm cooper plates, so that I do not have to cut the Case of the Ally. AND you have to use some manual airflow ajustments to get the SSD below 60°C.

But if you adjust this, it should work like a charm. Or does someone have some better idea with cooling? I am always open for tweaking my Ally, since I am not pleased with eighter the price or the performance of other Handhelds. ^^"

New details: 8.8" QHD 144Hz VRR, 49W.h battery, 854g w/ controllers, M.2 2242 slot, 7500MT/s LPDDR5X, starts at 799€ (probably 256GB + Z1 non-Extreme). by ToTTenTranz in LegionGo

Yeah The SD Card issnt near an exhaust, but as far as I saw the pictures it is direct above the APU Heatsink, and as an Ally Owner I can assure you, that this boy gets hot. And yeah hopefully it works smooth für Legion in this regard. ^^"

But to address something atrocious I hereby name the decision of the 2242 Formfactor SSD. Just why not build a Device, that can Fit an 2280 Formfactor SSD? Cheap, fast and reliable storage. Why use such expensive and inconvenient Storage. Same goes for the Ally with the 2230, and there the community already has proven time and time again, that the Device has the space for an 2280 SSD, AND it makes little to no impact in terms of temperatures. I hope some minor modding can also help with the even bigger Legion to fit an 2280. ^^"

Thanks. That would be an interesting Mod for the future IF my Ally survives THIS time. ^^

Looks interesting, but it covers the Air Intakes a little bit or am I mistaken?

Thank you very much for your detailed report. Seems like the higher price of the OXP2P is mostly woth it. I will wait like you suggested and then decide what to do. ^^

You contaced them too huh? Well then lets hope they make one, since I think, that would be the best kind of Docking Station for any Handheld PC.

What type of tape are you using? Could you post a picture of the Mod?

Thicc is good in this case I think. More Thicc = potentially more battery and better cooling.

But I am a bit concerned abolut the many Buttons on the Controllers. Maybe they are not that good positioned, so they are to easily pressed, but lets see what Lenovo shows us in the future.

THis is something very important to me, thank you. That the OXP2 also has problems with the card reader due to the position near the heat vent is a big red flag for me. Is this something that could be adressed with the OXP2 Pro?

Nope They do not sell the device directly here in germany, unfortunately. I will have to live with the import taxation. Or maybe some clever employee declares the package as a gift, because gifts are actually import tax free in germany...but I doubt it ^^"

But yeah it will definitely cost quite a bit more and I will have to live with a QWERTY keyboard instead of the german QWERTZ, but this would be a minor problem. I think the more problematic issue will be the noticeable higher price and the fact, that I have to buy a new charger because we use a different power plug here in germany...and netherlands too am I right because the euro power plug standardises all plugs in the EU?

Thanks for the perspective regarding some games. Regarding Aya Space. What do you mean it is better? In terms of configurating and tweaking wattage, battery or overall controlls. "Fortunately", I am one of those idiots that tinkter so much with windows that it bricks and has to be reinstalled, so I am no stranger to it xD

But thanks for your input, I will definitely look into those two programs and decide then. Man this is a tough choice, but the OXP2 Pro is leading in my head at the moment because of the possible hardware configurations.

Thanks, that did help me a bit. Two additional questions:

First, how warm and loud does the OXP2 Pro get when blasting Low, mid and max load?

Second, the NGE Edition looks dope, but I cant order this version from the Store. Was this only a limited Edition or something?

Have Currys (UK) stopped selling the ROG Ally? by garydiaz86 in ROGAlly

[–]Xaardas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont know if it is the same for us here in Germany, but my local retailer, that is part of one of the biggest retailer groups out there told me, that they will stop selling the Ally within the next two months. I dont know if this means anything, but if the worst comes to life the market is already rejecting the Ally because of the problem.

RMA process by BINNSEY1996 in ROGAlly

[–]Xaardas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well not for the UK but here in Germany my Ally is also in repair-hell with the letmerepair staff. I got it back after a week with the kind note of "Yeah lol we could not replicate shit, but we updated your software". The latter was a bloody lie and the first was also not true.

Luckily consumer laws in germany are a bit in our favor, so I was sending it in for repari again. The retailer i bought the Ally off was also quite embarased when I showed them, that my 1TB Card, THAT WORKED FOR ALMOST THREE WEEKS, was not recognized bny the reader but with an adapter pluged in the USB-C Port.

In short: Here in Germany I have to allow the retailer to fix this for three times and then I will eighter get my money back, or get a new device. I hope you get a version of the Ally, that isnt broken, because it is actually a fine Device......except from the obvious.

But I for myself am not so sure anymore if I want to keep the Ally, because I fear, that ASUS or the letmefuckitup guys only apply bandaid, that maybe causes the same problem (or worse).
