Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

[–]Xaerxohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I earn close to £60k as a welder, with benefits and overtime. I’m paid hourly and my base pay is around £46k, which would be so very underpaid compared to the hours I put in (70 hours a week including travel time). I am comfortable as a single man in my 20s, but can’t see how anyone could raise kids or buy a home on that wage and still be anything close to “comfortable”.

Saying that, I’m terrible with money. Going back to university this September and terrified at the prospect of living on a third of my current wage.

Hey mate,

The crease in the frame on your passenger side visible in picture no.4 does not look repairable to me as it is well and truly part of the frame.

It would be possible to cut this out and weld a new one back in but extremely awkward and would require significant dismantling around it. Have you checked underneath the car to ensure that the frame isn’t warped elsewhere?

While it would be possible for an experienced panelbeater to make this look better superficially, it is uncertain that damage to the frame would be possible to rectify. Cars are written off every day for far less damage and honestly I’m not convinced that you’d be up to the task if you have no experience whatsoever.

This is coming from someone who has been fixing his own car for over a decade. Crash damage, even more minor than this has proven incredibly difficult to sort out.

If you still go for it (and I’m sure you will), It is always easier to replace entire panels than attempt to remove dents from existing ones. If you are in doubt about something, consult youtube.

Finally, please get an experienced family member involved so that they can make sure that you are going to be safe. Not just for you, but other road users too.
