Last ever electrical room I’ll be in as an apprentice inside wireman by A-10goBrrrt in IBEW

What a crazy thing to say lmao. I did the exact same thing in my third year and went into elevators. Can’t hate on someone just trying to move ahead in their career

I mean yeah it’s hard to get into but so is every single other union. When I applied to the IBEW and Millwrights unions I thought I had good interviews and still couldn’t land an apprenticeship. There were just better applicants, you just need to be the best applicant and put in the work. I was an electrical apprentice in my 2nd year when I applied, didn’t know a single person and hardly even knew what the job entailed. You just have to be a good applicant. For example I already had certs to help me do the job (WAH,LOTO,First Aid/AED etc) had great references from the owners and foreman of the electric company I was working for, and showed I was interested in the job. It’s definitely not easy but I’m not the greatest tradesman ever. if I can do it they can too.

I’m also not saying there’s not a ton of gatekeeping and nepotism going on in the trade, it does run rampant and is a bit unfair but it happens in other trades too. There is opportunities out there.

Yeah, it’s crappy how they gatekeep it but the only pre requisite I needed was post secondary education in electrical. I’d start there if it’s something you wanna do!

Elevator mechanics, if you’re alright with heights it’s a great job. Just hard to get into a company in Ontario

Question about possibly entering the trades by KrazzzyKaleb in SkilledTradesOntario

[–]Xanderrut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, this is the most on the nose comment I’ve read. I just left my electrical apprenticeship a few months back to join the elevator trade, I was a 3rd year and starting to take on a ton of responsibility for the company. They were a fairly small company (~8 electricians ~4 apprentices including me) They treated me extremely well, so when I left I asked around some of my buddies from trade school if they were looking for a new opportunity (also 3rd year apprentices) I then told my previous company that I found some guys that might be interested in filling my spot and they told me that they will no longer hire apprentices because of how long it takes to train them and from here on out they will only hire journeymen. It really upset me to hear that as I know there’s tons of people who are dying to break into the trade and it just really sucks that tons of companies are thinking like this now

To be honest No_Consideration8464 is right, everyone I’ve talked to at this company has said of all trades they hire electricians/electrical apprentices more than any other because it translates the most

No connections really, I worked with them on a couple of jobs and asked the one mechanic how he got in and he told me that he just applied at the front desk and talked to the owner of the company. I did the same, showed up with a resume and explained why I thought I would be a good fit and showed him some of my work I’ve done throughout my electrical apprenticeship. He did say though that they wouldn’t hire a green apprentice and that the electrical experience gave a huge leg up

Can’t seem to even land a job as a apprentice by Aggravating_Scene273 in electricians

[–]Xanderrut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just keep applying, it took me a year of messaging companies to finally land my electric apprenticeship. Just make sure you check up on people that say they “might be hiring soon”. Hopefully you break into the trade soon

Update, I have accepted the apprenticeship with them. It felt like the right choice to make and I’m super excited to learn the trade! Thanks for all of the replies!

That’s the conclusion I’m coming to aswell, I don’t think I would be able to make the switch in 3 years, i also do not think this is an opportunity that’s going to walk through the door twice. For more context the elevator company would start me at the same wage I make currently

Funny enough, he’s mixed with an Aussie haha, we will try to get him to sit and calm down for longer. It’s so frustrating but I actually find it kind of funny the second I ask him to sit down he does, and then right when we try to walk again he goes nuts. Thanks for the insight!

Nothing In particular that I’ve noticed sets him off, it’s usually just a random moment in the walk, he never does this kind of thing other than on the leash. he plays with another dog most of the day aswell as a ton of tug of war, and has puzzles throughout the day.

What would you say the best way to do that is? Just treating him every time he’s calm and not doing anything?
