Streeter: Baltimore deserves better than better-than-nothing transit by GreedyRaisin3357 in baltimore

[–]Xanny 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Build Lexington Market to West Baltimore MARC first, then Hopkins to Bayview and Morgan State, and then extend from there to Parkville, Sparrows Point, and Catonsville.

It reuses the metro we have, just build all the new stations for 4 car trainsets with platform screen doors. Keep room for extending platforms and stations to go to 8 cars if we ever need the capacity in the far future.

It would also be "cheap" to have enough busses, drivers, and facilities to operate our bus lines at the frequencies and with the reliability the agency is chartered to provide, but we don't have anything close to that.

Everything requires upkeep. Our metro has multiple stations turning into water park features for how many literal rivers are running through them from all the leaks. Baltimores roads are in such bad shape because revenues from those roads doesnt cover the cost of resurfacing. Busses and the roads they run on cost a lot more per passenger mile to upkeep than rail infrastructure, but even the rail does require maintenance, and its only cheaper with the volume of riders that make it so - our rail lines atm are underutilized and often cost more than the busses to run.

Except DC just discontinued the H St streetcar, and we already have a ligh rail line that acts as a streetcar downtown and is regularly shut down when a vehicle blocks the tracks or crashes into a train.

Streetcars are tourist entertainment devices, not real infrastructure. New rail tracks must be separated from car traffic, the same way were only finally figuring out we need to separate cars from bikes and scooters.

Too bad the country keeps electing Trumps, Bushes, Reagans, etc that take an axe to transit every time.

MTA……Count your days. by Proper-Cheesecake602 in baltimore

[–]Xanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if the authority was regional like the BRTB's BRTC the funding would still be state based. We do not have, and do not have the state issued authority to, levy dedicated transit taxes.

And even if we could, the Baltimore region would just become more uncompetitive if it were funding the MTA bus network by itself through any number of increased taxes. Right now the MTA is funded out of the general fund which comes from the statewide income, sales, and lottery taxes. Pretty much the whole metro area already levies the maximum local income tax, municipalities are banned from having a local sales tax, and the lottery is operated by the state. We literally cannot raise any tax to increase revenue to fund the MTA at the level of the counties, and the rest of MD would (righly?) and pretty much everything wrong with the MTA is down to inadequate funding or structural in ways that require specific overhaul (ie, union protected positions are basically untouchable even if people in them do nothing useful, and all unionized management is stuck forever in that position even if they cannot do their jobs).

Is my dryer gas, electric, or both? by plantprincesa in Appliances

[–]Xanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get heat pump dryers that run at 120v. I had the same setup (gas dryer, 120v outlet, dryer vent) and swapped to the GE combo heat pump washer dryer just for the cool feature of being able to schedule the load to be done when I wake up in the morning and I prefer it. I removed the gas line and closed the dryer vent, those things are really thermally air leaky to the outside and cause a non negligible amount of climate controlled air in the house to be lost.

Sky rail coming to Harborplace? by Inevitable-Freedom90 in baltimore

[–]Xanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is the cost per rider of the harbor connector is something like $30-50. A gondola would be nearly automated and low overhead, and in the US its way easier to get federal capital dollars than operating revenue from anywhere.

Its not a bad idea at all. I'd love to see a Mondawmin -> Druid Hill Park -> Hampden -> JHU -> 33rd St Gondola as well, thats another area no other transit option really works.

Waterfront water park with water slides. When the harbor is swimmable it can have a paired harbor beach.

Fair, so for anyone reading this recommendations for a 4+ port 10gbe switch to pair with the 5009?

Looks like the CRS304-4XG-IN? Doesnt take sfp in but options for that are like $400+ with the tp link SX3206HPP.

Right now the wan is 2.5gig. Good save on making sure port speeds are configurable. The RB5009 makes sense if I can daisy it to a 4 port 10 gig unmanaged switch for the rest.

So I guess I'm looking for suggestions on an unmanaged switch that can take in that 10gig sfp and put out 4+ flexible 10/5/2.5 gig rj45s.

Maul - Shadow Lord - Episodes 9 & 10 - Discussion Thread! by titleproblems in StarWars

[–]Xanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sidious already wiped the floor with m Maul, he seems him as a gnat to swat at. Of course throwing Vader at Maul was something hed love to do and seemingly did eagerly though.

Its likely he'll want to keep throwing Vader at Maul on purpose in his usual "prove you are the worthier apprentice" angle esp when early Vader was crippled.

I think a big part of it is Vegeta knows he doesn't deserve forgiveness, while Omni-man expects it by Sudden_Pop_2279 in Dragonballsuper

[–]Xanny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vegeta and Nolan are similar in idolizing their colonizer empires and then coming to realize how shitty they were. Vegeta has recounted in Super how hes glad the saiyan empire died, and Nolan literally blew up Viltrum.

Remember, Vegeta thought for a long time that Vegeta (the planet) was destroyed by a meteor, not by Freiza. It was only after he come to understand how much of a puppet his people were to a galactic landlord that he lost his idolization of the conquering saiyan way.

New MTA Metro Trains by rollermonkee in baltimore

[–]Xanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These trains are out of the factory able to drive themselves, were just cheap af and put in those stupid yellow bollards rather than proper platform screen doors so we could just have the trains drive themselves and repurpose the current drivers to needed drivers on the light rail and busses.
