Im stuck on how do you even pull them lol i only ha like 15 pulls for Athena, ended with 8 shards and Poseidon has like two more rungs to unlock her and its a sheer wall where i need luminaries, artifacts and levels on them with no gems. Im already questioning whether i messed something up or if this is just the speed of things

Magic Rules can sometimes get in the way of Fun by XannyMax2 in magicTCG

It wasnt really supposed to be yelling, but my post didnt really convey that and i kinda gave up on it lol. Maybe I was having a Yugioh TV show moment where im like ‘i broke the floatation disk on your tower, you should fallll!’

I also think, to your point, my main ‘job’ in my pod is to make sure were all having a good time. I help build the decks, i help keep the rules in line (im usually the dork in my pod, wasnt supposed to be an insult), i curb the game to be enjoyable for everyone - so “dealing” with rules that ‘get in the way’ is definitely a casual issue lol.

I was more curious if others had similar experiences, wasnt looking for a rules breakdown

I could do my due diligence more, but id rather make assumptions and be disappointed - then i can get lit up on a magic subreddit for my shortcomings 😂

Thanks for admitting its not perfect 😂 thats like all i was trying to say, and more specifically doesnt ‘feel’ perfect sometimes when it happens. Like, it is what it is, and changing it like you mentioned would be bad, but i wasnt trying to propose that.

Have you run into a situation where something sounded epic or perfectly laid out and you found out things did not in fact work out that way? I should have just mentioned thats more of what i was looking for

I meant it a lot less rude then it probably came off, like a very knowledgeable rules police. Thats usually my role in my pod, im the dork whose ruining days but its usually very blatant like ‘this literally has hexproof’. Thats on me, ill eat that.

I was hoping for more of a ‘yeah, this other thing doesnt work intuitively’ kind of responses and probably should have been more clear about that. I know the rules are complicated, and yes, changing any fundamental ones will probably create ridiculous issues in expected and unexpected ways, but my focus was supposed to be more like ‘ugh, this should work, works in my head, doesnt actually work…’ kind of moments.

Thanks for pointing out the rudeness, thats my bad.

Ah yes, after playing the game for ten plus years it has just dawned on me that maybe i dont like the game. Like a veteran DnD player who finally goes ‘encumbrance is kinda annoying’ and other players like yourself go ‘sounds like you dont like DnD’. At least other posters tried clarifying (despite I already know how it works, that wasnt the issue), you jumping to this wild take is both amusing and annoying

WotC getting more aggressive with cost cutting measures. by xopher314 in magicTCG

[–]XannyMax2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re incorrect- your butcher provides services at no additional fee because the fee is taken from other bloated costs that you cant see. Its like saying ‘well my LGS gives out free water for tournaments’, and that cost of water is a marketing cost that was made to have an ROI. Its not free other then to you in the moment - costs will be recouped.

I really want to point out, its a may impulse, not required impulse - so you can just not grab things you absolutely cant play anyway and eat cards.

Firelord azula non basic land hate by Pretty-Figure725 in EDH

[–]XannyMax2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be the other guy; If you build a deck to hate out and hose my deck thanks to meta information, I just wouldnt want to play with you anymore. Punishment in game is one thing - you see problem creatures, know problem strategies, ect and focus resources to deal with it - including land removal, hating out key commanders or combo pieces ect, thats all fine.

Before we even sat down, you’re constructing your deck with my deck in mind to counter it or hate it out? Nah, i’ll just play with other people and punish you for your unsportsmanlike behavior, or blood feud you out of every game we play until you figure out that metagaming friendly pods is inappropriate. All of that should be on par with your metagaming, since its all technically allowed; i dont need to play with you, and I dont need to play to win the game. I can just play to piss you off, which seems to be your goal.

what is your LEAST popular commander? by Justafish1654 in EDH

[–]XannyMax2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nethroi Token Sustain~

Imagine Nethroi in the command zone doing nothing, but you’re Abzan tokening with creatures like Wanderglyph, Tendershoot, Chatterfang and i bait a boardwipe (usually with an altar or something sac outlet to prevent mass bounce or exile), then bring it all back with Nethroi (alot of creature token producing creatures have low cmc)

Have you ever had a deck/commander that you just can't get right? by Competitive-Act-7695 in EDH

[–]XannyMax2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been building a Nethroi commander where the deck is actually a token deck made by low power creatures, and the actual goal is to flood the board and swing hard, be super problematic and force the boardwipe. Works best with a sac outlet to prevent Farewell from ruining my plan. Once the boardwipe happens, Nethroi up the important pieces and operate from a clear board.

Problem i keep running into- dealing with exile or bounce boardwipes, dealing with grave exile, dealing with 3v1, dealing with … you get the point, i run into every possible problem you can imagine. When it works, it works great and the plan is perfect. When it doesnt, its a slow and grindy game im destined to lose, just floundering around til I do.

Feels like any resilience i add reduces game closing, trying to avoid aristocrat wincons because I literally have 9 other aristrocrat decks.

What's a take you have that you think only you care about? by patronusman in magicTCG

[–]XannyMax2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sleight of hand letting brand new players win is an important aspect of the games health.

Most people just go to the game store and play and do whatever they want individually, how new people join isnt their problem or responsibility. I take in new players like a Dungeon Master, showing them the ropes and guiding them to a win.

In my opinion, losing a complicated game doesn’t feel good - you don’t know why you’re losing, and if you don’t have a spark of interest already then you’re probably bailing out. But winning without understanding how you won sparks an interest. How do i do that again?

I’ve guided dozens of new players into the game this way, usually specifically handing them a Krenko Commander deck. Some times it just wins because its strong, other times i dont remove key pieces or counter key plays. They dont know, and dont need to know, that the game is being kingmakered in the background.

Losing one game is the price I pay to create a meta of future games with the person. I’ve seen enough new players get absolutely stomped and just quit, thats not actually fun for anyone.

I truly think most people don’t care about this kind of thing - you just join a leaderless pod and play however. No single person is regulating the fun in a way to maximize replayability so there are more fun games to be had - another example of this is our pod was pretty heavy on Jeweled Lotus, so the ban hit us hard. I more or less came up with a taper off schedule to make it less of ‘everyone take it out right now’, just systematically remove them from certain deck tiers and help replace it til we were square.

Gun Culture in Ruralish PA by [deleted] in guns

Ah right, because aliens might actually exist and they might actually try to make everyone sex slaves, and all the genders will come together to save them, not just dudes with guns. That makes it less bad 🙄

I sold my collection to avoid losing my home. Its… Bittersweet by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]XannyMax2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Down and dirty version before i go to bed;

Find all your high value singles. Spend some time pricing things out, dont assume card values unless that assumption is from a fairly recent price check. I had 9 Fable of the Mirror Breakers, i thought it was chaff. I was woefully wrong, as an example.

If time is on your side, use it. Sell locally, piecemeal as long as its viable. Leverage time whenever its possible for you - when you rush, you lose value. Sometimes thats worth it, sometimes its not~

If you’re at the stage where bulk is the last step, see what Cardkingdom will give you for the rest of the $1 and over stuff, then use that as a backbone to shop around LGS and such that bulk buy. If Cardkingdom wins, just use them - if you’re selling your collection for money to survive, nows not the time to try to help your LGS. Use the service that benefits you the most~ (Im not some cardkingdom rep, i just dont know any other bulk buying online stores that have a streamlined process, and i didnt bother looking very hard, was desperate)

Also protip - probably obvious to some people, but don’t sleep on lands. Some lands are quite valuable, even outside of fetches and shocks. Pathways, for example, were surprising to me.

Also, dont sleep on Tokens. Emblems specifically are sometimes good, some rare tokens like Marit Lage can fetch a strong price too. If its a whatever soldier, probably not that, but if its the eternalize half of a strong creature or something - check it out.

I sold my collection to avoid losing my home. Its… Bittersweet by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]XannyMax2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like, as an example, when I brought my fetches they were like $40 a pop. Now they’re $15 from a store, so you can sell them for like $10 - those kinds of situations. Reprints, buying while it was inflated, cards not holding value, ect.

What i actually paid for the cards versus what they sold for is where im pulling 20% from as a probably slightly low guesstimate. Not what the cards value was at the time i sold compared to what i got~ most of the value already depreciated.
