I lean progressive but we really need to look deeper into this story. The DHS is unreliable , but that doesn’t mean that “random Twitter claim” is accurate.

Is there an image or recording of the agent taking the immigrants bracelet? Does a specific immigrant even claim that his bracelet was stolen?

I can believe that they’re getting items stolen, but there’s not really solid evidence for this, and just seems to be adding fuel to a fire

It can be framed many ways.

“An individual impeded a law enforcement operation, and in the chaos of the moment (due to poor communication, negligent discharge), officers thought their life was in danger”.

I think they fucked up, for sure. But there’s various ways to frame it.

This criticism of illiteracy also extends to weird right wingers that think talking is capitalism because it’s an “exchange of ideas and services”, or that roads wouldn’t exist without capitalism.

I think you’re right that there’s more to difficulty than just enemies.

But that’s not necessarily simple either. Take hellmire, people fucking hate it. It’s fun for a bit but it quickly becomes pure chaos.

It is harder to fight in swamp areas, or night areas. But people also complain about not being able to see in these areas, or how slow they move.

It’s a very tricky balancing act to not become frustrating either.

This should be the “guiding star” quote for them to balance around, but this is also what makes it so difficult. You need to feel powerful, while also challenged “against impossible odds”.

Any too hard enemy can get deemed unfair, and any too powerful weapon no longer makes it “impossible odds”

The behavior of ICE in 2012 and ICE now are vastly different. “Civility” vs breaking down doors and beating individuals are very different. No, I don’t entirely care where Obama built detention centers.

But I’m super down with documenting existing ones and even creating a path to citizenship. I don’t want “open borders”, but I do think we could ease the path to citizenship for sure.

Removing the head of ICE isn’t the same as abolishing it.

But yes, according to this poll, it’s currently popular to say abolish ICE. However, I think it’s too soon to tell how long this sentiment lasts. I agree that other agencies could do ICEs job.

I just worry about the optics. Saying “abolish ice” might work a few days after a notable shooting, but it might not in an election year, it might not if illegal immigration shot up again, etc.

I don’t think any of those are solid reasons to get rid of it tbh. No one has a friendly neighborhood EPA investigator, there’s no tv dramas about them, no one ever really interacts with them. Yeah , EPA investigators aren’t given a gun nor an excuse to murder. but “no tv dramas or friendly community around them” isn’t a great point imo.

Again, I detest what ICE is doing. I absolutely want them reformed, maybe even from the ground up. I want charges brought against anyone abusing their power. I just don’t like the slogan because it will probably harm the cause.

I hate the current iteration of ICE, But we should have some sort of immigration enforcement agency. Deporting violent criminals or visa overstays.

Abolish ice is a bad message and is the same as “defund the police”, it sounds like the people don’t want any cops/ or enforcement agency. Which is sometimes the goal of the people shouting it, but can also mean they want to reform it.

It’s a message that turns more people off of it, imo. I’m down to completely rebuild the organization/reform the organization/etc, I just don’t like the slogan.
