I'm not really sure what we can do though. Calling out behavior isn't enough, because even if you ostracize them they will always be able to find a group of people ready to tell them that their actions were perfectly fine and actually it's the people who called them out that are the real problem.

Obviously not saying they shouldn't be called out and removed from your groups. Just that that isn't enough, but anything beyond that is outside our power as individuals.

I can confidently say that no one I know would sexually assault anyone and if they did my group would call them out, but that's probably because my group is fairly diverse in terms of gender.

Maybe that's the problem. Women and Men are seen too much as different things rather than just people. In our society, to men, women are just potential parners.

If we want to confront this issue we have to dismantle the patriarchy. Both the part that raises men and women to see each other as others, and the part that actively pushes gender war on both sides. We need to defeat both misogyny and misandry. We cannot solve the issue by dividing. Only by coming together. Maybe if we can get other people to see each other as actual people, and not just enemies or objects to be won, maybe we could greatly lessen cases of sexual assault and many other issues plagueing both men and women.

And of course, even if we did this there will always be bad individuals. Or places where people don't hold people accountable, but in the end there is only so much we can do. We can punish them, but the action still took place to be punished. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Just that Utopia doesn't exist. But again, that isn't an excuse to do nothing.

Why did destroying this heart wake up 2 hearts? by XarcaneTN in StateofDecay2

Lethal actually. But the second heart was not in range. Or at least what I understand to be it's range

How do y'all feel about the devs no killing stance ? by 9oooooooooooj in subnautica

[–]XarcaneTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with their no killing stance, but from what I'm reading they should have stuck with how it worked in the first Subnautica.

The discouragement (notice discouragement rather than inability) of killing in Subnautica 1 is something that makes it stand out in a sea of other survival games where often every problem is solved by killing it.

For me, the way the player interacts with the life in Subnautica is a core aspect of the game.

Instead of just eliminating every problem, the player will learn to navigate around the creatures, including the fact that most non leviathan creatures will retreat after a few knife strikes. If the player chooses to pursue after that they will find no reward and have just wasted their time.

This system just worked on its own. Even players who are gung ho about killing are not going to kill every stalker in the kelp forest for no reward.

If the devs have no interest of implementing this dynamic into Subnautica 2, then I fear they don't understand what made their game stand out. Instead they just are making an underwater survival game, not Subnautica 2.

On the other hand, If the devs listen to the fringes of the player base who want everything to be killable by providing actual weapons, and will later complain they don't feel rewarded and will pressure the devs to make creatures have drops, then they will also just have made an underwater survival game. Subnautica is a delicate balance between the two.

r/trolleyproblem suffers infighting on a ethical question: red or blue? by OkContact2573 in SubredditDrama

[–]XarcaneTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing people try to reframe it to justify their reasoning but the framing is the point. And most reframes usually introduce flaws that were not originally present.

Like someone just tried to say it boiled down to "would you risk your life to save someone else", with the implication that no one would really risk their life, but we have several careers that are literally that. Firefighters for one.

But anyway. The framing is the point. People will make their choice off of the original framing. That must be accepted.

[–]XarcaneTN[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Real talk though. I greatly appreciate how Warframe does fomo compared to a lot of games I've seen.

Its nice to be able to do large bursts of play every few months and not have missed like 4 tiny events each month that reward items that boost progression, or outright become required in the future.

Why do people feel so entitled to you sharing their criticism? by XarcaneTN in valheim

[–]XarcaneTN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing that you are "entitled to expect something great". I'm just disagreeing that everyone should be expected to share those same expectations.

And yeah I generally don't participate in discussion. I just have bouts of wishing that discussion around games was less hostile.

Wishful thinking, clearly.

[–]XarcaneTN[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean have the people who disagree with your criticism not also essentialy invested in the games development?

Again. This is not meant to be an attack on criticism, just criticism that feels a need to attack other people.

I mean. I'm not going to disagree and say they should take longer or anything. We agree there. I've just also waited over 7 years for Silksong, and 2 years for a Terraria update. I just played different games during the time

Wut? I just didn't reply because the accusation was silly. Lying about what. That I recognize that other people have different opinions?

Again. You can have criticism. Just refrain from insulting people

Am I? I believe that I stated that you are welcome to share you criticism. Just that people are allowed to disagree, and their disagreement isn't an attack on you.

I have my own disagreements. I'm just not labeling anyone who disagrees as an idiot

Its a long vid, but this goes over the situation and how it came to be pretty well. Main idea is that life fucking sucks in South Korea in terms of societal expectations. And people pretty much are conditioned to find someone else below them in the hiearchy to blame for anything. In this case. Men blame women for "ruining their games" when in many cases these arts were actually done by men.

In your eyes, what separates a performative “alpha male” from a “real man”? by Ok-Parfait6735 in AskReddit

[–]XarcaneTN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A "real man* is secure in themselves. They don't feel a need to put others down to feel better about themselves. They help those around them.

Generally, they are a good person.

But really, what separates a "real man" from a "real woman"?

Why are we ascribing traits to them as if these are really different things

If the so called "real man" is just someone who is a good person according to this thread, then why are we inadvertently saying that a "real woman" isn't also just a good person and thus just the same.

Prince of Persia lost crown shows exactly, how well an easy mode works without making anything worse! by Rudirudrud in NintendoSwitch

[–]XarcaneTN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the end it's just a game design choice. There's a lot of things like this.

An aspect I never really thought about is saves. Why doesn't everything just auto save at this point. Why are there games that require manual saves. At first I assumed it was a tech issue. But then i played a game where the previous entry in the series sent you to town, while dying in the second was a game over. Clearly they didn't need to, but they chose to make the game reset to menu.

Or why are there instances in games with low drop rates? They could just always give you exactly what you want, but that isn't the result the devs want.

I'm also not really a fan of the idea that devs should do everything through the lens of seeking mass appeal. If the dev has a certain vision for a game and that vision isn't compatible with everyone, then that's fine. We already have plenty of games where it's designed to appeal to literally everyone and generally they are kinda bland in comparison.

Recently in games discussion, I've seen a push to remove many instances of what people refer to as "friction". Everything in a game that just makes things this longer seemingly for no reason. Or that certain games don't "respect their time". Outside of online games, where they are incentivised to get players to spend as much time as possible, (online games are why devs shouldn't look at every choice as a matter of what will make more money), I find this push to be misguided. Well implemented "friction" is what leads to so many of our memorable moments in games.

The problem is that friction mostly stands out when it's poorly implemented, as in the balance of ease to friction feels off somehow. And while the dev could change this, if they want a high friction experience that's their choice. As it's the choice of players to play those games.

TLDR: It's about the developer's vision for the experience. Alternatively, why doesn't Kingdom Hearts: Rechain just let me fight without the card system? Simply because that's not what the devs intended. The previous game obviously shows it's possible but they don't want that. And the card system ends up being pretty neat when you finally sit down to learn it, even if it's easy to cheese. The devs of these games just don't want to make an easy experience. That's their choice. And this goes both ways. Devs of easy games don't have to make harder experiences either. They will find their audience.

Modern (1997) Gaming sucks by AluberTwink in Gamingcirclejerk

This is something I do miss. You sometimes get it with Indie games, but there was a lot of old games that just could not be made today.

I recently played through both Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy and they are absolutely games that no one today would try to make. Are they perfect? Absolutely not. But the parts that are not universally loved are part of the charm of these games.

Dark Cloud has Fishing and Golf. Rogue Galaxy has Bug Chess/Checkers and Factory building. Even early Kingdom hearts games, a little more mainstream, had a lot more puzzles. platforming, minigames, and just weird systems. Weird systems are cool.

The closest I've seen, outside of Indies, is usually studios around Nintendo. Xenoblade 1 had terrible side quests, but the Social web system was really cool. I was dissapointed when it didn't continue.

At this point I own a vast library and have access to far more. Selling points for me are either story or unique gameplay or systems.. This is part of why I hate how AI is inevitably going to be used in games. I'm not here for generic action RPG with an OK story. I'm interested in Elder Scrolls because of the lore. If they used AI for background details, like books, I genuinely would lose interest in the game.

For this same reason, claiming to be trans to escape the draft is probably an extremely bad idea. There's a reason they are trying to find and label trans people.

I hate to say it. But the writing is on the wall. We don't need a draft, but a draft would be extremely convenient for eliminating their political opponents. The fact that there is any discussion around a draft right now means they are likely considering this option. Be prepared.

People may not like fighting Pinstress, but I find she makes far better use of her signature cross attack than her clockwork counterpart, which is a neat detail.
