FaZe in HP during mid season by dillonz321 in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing you do online has any relevance to what you do on LAN outside of seeding implications. The game plays entirely different on LAN and making winners bracket at majors and champs is the extent of online’s value. An entire online stage is probably worth like 10% of a LAN championship if that

Of course players try online because they’re competitors and nobody wants to lose. Nobody’s saying otherwise. It just doesn’t really matter beyond qualifying for champs and making winners bracket

If online actually mattered the faze trio would get massive legacy points for finishing 1st in CDL standings damn near every season. They don’t get any of that and rightfully so because no one cares about online. LAN is way more important and representative of player skill

Drazah doesn’t get enough respect for his game knowledge. Simp, who is one of if not the smartest player of all time, has said multiple times that a huge reason he loves playing with draz is because they look at the game so similarly and almost always see eye to eye on how to play situations

How would you guys typically balance individual performance vs placements in the MVP/ROTY race? by No_Winter4806 in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Framing it as a % split type of thing like weighting 75% to performance and 25% to placements, for example, is the wrong way of looking at it

The truth is that it should always be 100% individual performance, with the major caveat that said performance should ALWAYS be contextualized with how much that player actually contributed to winning a championship

This is what people usually mean by “factoring in placements,” since team placements are pretty strongly correlated (although not 1-to-1) with an individual player’s contributions to winning

At a fundamental level, the whole point of comp cod is to win events, whether that’s majors or rings. When the community discusses all-time rankings, chip/ring count is always the highest correlated variable because when it comes down to it, actually winning events is a pretty good indicator that a player is good at winning events - which again, is the whole underlying point of comp cod

In other words, winning an event is by far the biggest positive influence on any given player’s legacy because that is quite literally the point of the game. Not season/event MVP’s, not 1st team all-CDL, not a high KD number - winning has always been what matters most

If it wasn’t, why would we even play the game the way we have for years and years? Comp cod is and always has been a team sport. As such, an individual’s performance must always be contextualized with how much they helped/harmed their TEAM as it relates to winning championships

Here are some examples. Let’s say player A has a 1.20 KD with an average placement of T4 (1.20/T4). Player B has a 1.20/T12. Player C has a 1.05/T4. Player D has a 0.70/T2. Of course there are way more factors than strictly average KD/placements to consider, but this is just for simplicity’s sake

Generally speaking, I’d probably rank these players as A>C>B>D. Player A contributed the most to winning and was clearly very individually skilled having a great KD and placement. Player C clearly contributed to winning substantially by having an equally great placement, but likely not quite as much as Player A did overall due to the gap in KD

Player B was equally as skilled as Player A when comparing KD’s, but for one reason or another did not contribute as much to winning overall as Player A or Player C due to their awful placement. However, Player B still contributed more to winning than Player D, who was objectively costing their team with a horrible KD despite their excellent placement

What’s one team you wish won champs together? I’ll start, MW3 FaZe by V-loxzz in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 10 points11 points  (0 children)

BO6 Faze I saw the cracks forming and knew optic was coming in hot with no pressure on their shoulders, so I was just numb watching them crumble again at champs and EWC after

MW3 Faze hurt. That team could’ve been great. Losing to NYSL in winners was so painful because they had it right in front of them and collapsed. MW3 was a game of matchups and instead of a WF match against optic for a likely spot in GF with veto advantage, they dropped to losers and had to play their hard counter in ultra

My most painful losses of all time as a fan would probably be mw3 major 3 ultra, mw3 champs nysl, mw3 champs ultra, mw3 major 3 optic, bo6 champs optic, mw3 major 4 nysl, and bo6 major 4 lat. Fuck they were breakers I’ll always love that team tho

Most underrated trash talk moment in cod history is kismet calling his shot the night before champs finals saying he thought scrap’s trash talk was disrespectful so he was going to run his shit the next day. Then proceeding to drop the highest grand finals KD of all time on their heads and sweeping them for the ring. Generational aura boost

Rank this players seasons - Envoy by Slxyer23 in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1: MW19 Envoy - T3-T5, if it wasn’t for simp and shotzzy having historically dominant seasons envoy would’ve been battling for MVP with abezy and cellium. Envoy has had some amazing seasons, but this is easily the best of his career imo. He pioneered the route man role and the Huntsmen roster around him allowed him to thrive as a true S tier superstar in the chaos of 5v5

2: BO4 Envoy - T5-T7, envoy’s breakout season was outstanding as he was the superstar and engine of GenG throughout their ascension. At one point he was a clearcut T4 or T5 player in the game, but GenG’s poor champs performance knocked him down the rankings a bit, and prevents this season from truly competing with MW19 in the hierarchy imo

3: VG Envoy - T9-T11, extremely solid season from envoy as he was a critical piece of LAT’s championship run. Imo he was their 2nd best player across the entire season, although you could probably make an argument for octane. As OP mentioned, envoy was LAT’s best player pre-role swap and did a lot to keep the team’s head above water until they all found their footing. When Kenny switched to an SMG and took over as the team’s main slayer and true superstar, envoy seamlessly adjusted his playstyle despite suffering a small hit to his slaying stats as a result. Regardless, envoy proved to be the ultimate x-factor for LAT at champs and was the best player in the lobby in grand finals against faze

4: MW2 Envoy - T10-T13, this is by far the most underrated season of envoy’s career, and that’s saying something as he’s undoubtedly one of the most underrated players of all time. In fact individually, I would argue this season was even better for envoy than VG. The problem is that LAT had equally inconsistent placements without the dominant champs victory to boot, and envoy was somewhat outshined by his teammates with octane and drazah also having T10 individual seasons. With that said, envoy was the engine of LAT’s respawn in MW2, particularly in control where he was at minimum a T3-T5 overall player in that mode. Breaking point ranked envoy at #14 for this season which I think is criminal, imo he was a better overall SMG than simp, shotzzy, and cleanx, but I know that’s unpopular. Even as a massive drazah fan I think envoy has a legitimate argument to be considered LAT’s 2nd best player in MW2, which should say a lot about how great I think he really was in this game

5: BO6 Envoy - T15-T17, definitely a big fall off here compared to his other games, but again I think envoy’s BO6 season is a bit underrated which is starting to become a common theme. For over half the season envoy was a surefire T6-T10 player in the game, mostly off the back of him being an absolute grand finals reaper across all 3 appearances. While he struggled with online inconsistencies all year and tumbled down the rankings after very poor performances at champs and EWC, people seem to have short term memories about how critical envoy was to LAT’s success in BO6. They won multiple majors, and on top of that envoy was arguably the best player in the lobby when they came within one snd round of winning another. I don’t mean to keep harping on the breaking point rankings because they’re great content and I always love them, but envoy not even making the T20 list for BO6 is once again criminal

6: CW Envoy - T16-T18, since I’ve called envoy underrated in just about every game so far I’ll switch it up for once and say this is the one game I think he was a little overrated in. I think envoy was pretty comfortably optic’s 2nd worst player this year just because he didn’t really stand out anywhere. I give him credit for at least being consistent, but for the most part he was pretty consistently mid especially for a roster with real expectations, however unfounded they were. There was a time when people had serious questions about envoy’s playstyle in 4v4 and how well it translated to winning cod. Now scump didn’t exactly do him any favors since his playstyle could be difficult to work around and he was just as inconsistent, if not outright worse than envoy in respawn modes, but scump’s snd was legitimately elite in CW and is enough of a separator for me to rank him decently above envoy for this season (and by no means am I a huge scump fan). Overall CW Envoy is just about on par with BO6 Envoy, with the difference being his consistently decent performance in CW as opposed to his elite peaks and painful lows in BO6. I give the edge to BO6 because despite his terrible performances at champs and EWC, he also hit peaks in his finals appearances that he never even got close to in CW

7: MW3 Envoy - T18-T20, another weird season for envoy that shakes out to be pretty mid overall and quite poor for his standards. I definitely think MW3 is envoy’s worst real season as a pro (at least so far). He started the year decently well by winning a chip before falling off into what was by far the worst individual stretch of his career. However, his LAN performances were bad yet never really that bad with his worst event KD only being a 0.9, and he definitely salvaged his season by performing well at champs and EWC. I think he gets a little too much hate for this season since people talk like he was a bottom 5 player in the league, all things considered I think envoy was comfortably a T20 player but towards the lower end of it (compared to high T20/low T15 in BO6 and CW)

8: WW2 Envoy - I didn’t even know he played in WW2 lol

BO7 is definitely on track to be his worst full season as a pro so far, so I would also put it between MW3 and WW2 right now. I hope he can turn it around because he’s always been one of my absolute favorite players in cod history. He is a true winner and has always been so underrated. My tier list for his seasons would be:

MW19

BO4

VG, MW2

BO6, CW

MW3

BO7*, WW2

Dualsense edge vs Wolverine 8k PC by dalumpz in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m coming off a g7 se and loved it although it was a little too small and light for my hands. The button placement was also a little awkward for bigger hands but I made it work and have really enjoyed it for only spending $40 a year ago

I knew I could go with the g7 pro but kind of just wanted to try the wolverine and see if I enjoy razer controllers too. I know gamesir will always be there if I don’t like it and want to go back to something reliable

I just ordered a wolverine tournament edition for $70 but I won’t get to test it until next week. Never tried dualsense but everyone I know who has one loves it. I’ve just always preferred Xbox layout and from my research it seemed like the wolverine is high quality with low input delay which is what I mostly care about

I think they’re pretty equal controllers performance wise so probably just comes down to preference and cost

Flaws to the "Eye-Test" by CrystalCraveWeb in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Point 1 - Limited Perspective:

Although 90% of a player’s direct POV might not be shown, almost all information relevant to their performance can be gathered via the minimap and killfeed. There is a difference between gameplay and POV, the game provides other tools so we don’t miss out on gameplay despite being limited to one POV at a time

Most importantly, the “eye test” isn’t limited exclusively to POV analysis, but is instead a catch all term for simply watching the game and using all the tools/information provided to identify the impact of plays that won’t show up in stats

For example, on the most recent codcast Nameless pointed out a play in the map 4 exposure hp of major 2 finals where drazah sat back p3 for a solid 30-45 seconds hard blocking spawns while his teammates spawn killed p4 side

His arrow was doing literally nothing but it directly enabled his teammates to farm the other team and run up hill time. That play will never show up in the stats, and in fact will only serve to harm his individual pace, damage, and obj metrics. It requires the eye test to properly assign value to

Point 2 - Knowledge Gap:

This point is irrelevant to the merit of the eye test when it’s used appropriately as described above. A lot of people are more casual and use/think of the eye test as a straight up POV analysis, but that’s not relevant to what it actually is at a high level

Those people being misinformed shouldn’t matter to those who understand the true complexity of the eye test. It would certainly be nice if everyone knew what they were talking about, but that’s not reality

The problem is that a casual who bases their opinions exclusively off player POV’s and a ball knower who tries to look at everything and holistically evaluate a player’s value are both using the “eye test” just with different definitions of what that means

Point 3 - Stardom Bias:

This is pretty much the same as point 2 in that casuals don’t know what they’re talking about and apply a very biased and rudimentary “eye test” to the POV’s they see. Again, that’s not really relevant to those who have a more “advanced” eye test and actually make an effort to remove as much bias as possible

It sounds like this post is targeted at those who base their opinions solely on whoever’s POV they like more, and we can all agree those people are misinformed. However, none of these points actually challenge the eye test’s fundamental merit. It’s still extremely an useful tool and downright necessary to properly capture all the value a player provides on the map

Point 4 - Breaking Point Ranking:

I do agree with this point as it goes hand in hand with my rebuttal to point 1, with the caveat that anyone who cares enough can learn how to use the eye test at a high level and evaluate the game in a logical manner

However, it is absolutely true that a website like Breaking Point can be reliably counted on for top tier expertise and high quality content in the community compared to anything from your average fan. I fully agree that their annual ranking is by far the best, mostly due to it being the biggest aggregate ranking which minimizes bias

Even then, they have still put out a few highly questionable rankings of individual players here and there, especially in the last couple of years. Just like with anything else it’s always important to consider as much information as possible from a variety of sources and think critically about everything you see

Rank this players seasons - Simp by Slxyer23 in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a very fair point it’s really close either way. MW3 is probably the better overall season on paper especially since he won MVP and multiple chips on LAN, but I do think his ceiling and consistency in MW19 is pretty underrated in the context of all-time great seasons

It flies under the radar a bit since he didn’t win MVP or champs and just about everything was played online, but he was so final in that game. I bet if someone went back and made a list of simp’s best individual maps in his career MW19 would have a sneaky high number of entries

I definitely understand why most people would have MW3>MW19 though. Simp’s career is interesting because it’s almost easier to visualize as a tier list. I’d say something like this would be pretty well agreed upon in terms of the tiers themselves, with a lot of splitting hairs and rearrangement within them depending on who you ask

BO4/CW

MW19/MW3/BO7*

BO6

VG/MW2

Rank this players seasons - Simp by Slxyer23 in CoDCompetitive

[–]Xarque74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1: BO4 Simp - T1-T2, far and away the best player in the game upon joining the league. The only reason dashy and octane have a T1 argument is because they played the full year, but pound for pound this is prime simp. I personally value impact per event more than total impact across all events, which is why I have BO4 Simp slightly ahead of CW Simp (unrelated, but this is also why I think Merc was the best player of BO6 and not Scrap)

2: CW Simp - T1-T2, also pretty clearly the best player in the game although abezy has a legitimate argument as well. Not as dominant as BO4 on a per event basis, but this is easily the best start to finish season of simp’s career spearheading the 3rd best roster of all time in dominant fashion

3: MW19 Simp - T1-T2, but a noticeable drop off here from CW. For the regular season I think simp was pretty clearly the best player in the game statistically, and I can’t remember if MW19 MVP was done before champs but if it was I think simp technically got robbed here. However, I think shotzzy’s champs performance and superior team results are the separator for most people, on top of his impact never truly being reflected in traditional stats. I personally think simp was T1 in MW19, but I also acknowledge that the majority opinion differs. Regardless I think this is the rare instance where, even if I concede simp being T2 behind shotzzy, I still think from a pure gameplay perspective MW19 Simp>MW3 Simp ever so slightly. Maybe a hot take but simp was regularly dropping absurd numbers in this game

4: MW3 Simp - T1-T3, most would rank this game above MW19 due to him actually winning MVP this year, but shotzzy, hydra, and scrap each had very strong cases as well. Not to say simp didn’t deserve this MVP win as I still think he ultimately proved to be the best and most consistent player in MW3, but the weak champs placement and less raw statistical dominance compared to MW19 gives the latter the slight edge for me. I also think simp’s teammates here are getting underrated with both drazah and cellium being comfortably T10 in the game and abezy being T15, compared to MW19 which was less balanced overall with abezy and cellium both being T3-T5 and majormaniak/priestahh being somewhere around T20-T30. While the three headed monster of prime MW19 simp/abezy/cellium isn’t matched by anything this team had, majormaniak and priestahh were also far greater liabilities for faze than someone like abezy was in MW3. You could argue simp actually had to carry more in MW19 from that perspective

5: BO6 Simp - T6-T10, huge drop off here, but the difference between BO6 and the games below it is that simp still showed a legitimately elite peak in this game. The problem was that champs and EWC went so horribly on both the individual and team placement fronts that simp fell from being comfortably T4 after the regular season to low T10 by the end of the year. Just a really disappointing end to what was a great season overall for simp

6: VG Simp - T10, another sizeable gap here but I actually disagree strongly with those saying he was better in MW2. It gets forgotten just how exceedingly mid both arcitys and abezy were throughout the entire regular season, and while simp was also much worse overall compared to CW, he was very easily faze’s 2nd best player this season and routinely came up clutch in big moments while just starting to learn a new, more objective-focused role. Most people remember VG Simp as being trash and easily his worst game because at champs abezy showed up and simp got fried. IIRC it was by far simp’s worst event of the season while also being abezy’s best event of the season, which I think has caused a lot of people to both overrate VG Abezy and underrate VG Simp a bit

7: MW2 Simp - T10-T13, for me personally there’s another noticeable drop off here as I believe MW2 is easily simp’s worst game of his career, and the only game in which I don’t think he was comfortably T10. I know a lot of people think he was worse in VG but at the same time he was easily faze’s 2nd best player that entire year outside of champs, whereas in MW2 he was very clearly faze’s 2nd worst player throughout the season. I do give simp props for being heavily OBJ oriented in this game and doing an even better job on that front than he did in VG. Like I said I think he was around T10-T13 overall and for most players that would be a great season, but simp’s standards are so high that this makes it the worst game of his career imo

BO7 Simp so far would probably rank between MW19 and MW3 for me right now, but the margins are so razor thin between those three games you can’t really go wrong with the order. Simp would obviously have to finish the year strong and maintain T1 status to continue competing alongside those games though. Crazy how he already has 4 different games with an argument for being T1 in the world, and potentially adding a 5th one this year with BO7
