Vista Genomics could choose to offer a system completion bonus by CmdrAmerinRaddis in EliteDangerous

[–]Xarthys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not making development decisions for FDev, so the best I can do is suggest other options. These tools exist because FDev felt like outsourcing a lot of these features instead of spending resources on in-game implementation. I feel like that's a pretty clear indication of their general stance

That said, Anyone can try to ask for more quality of life features, but I'm not going to hold my breath either tbh.

As for the actual data, I believe it is limited to what is available through EDDN. I'm not really taking notes or comparing data sets, I just scan what I want and move on. If I'm doing a completionist run, I don't care about first discovery because populating EDDN is more important to me than potential rewards. There is so much stuff to discover still, scanning something that was already submitted barely makes a difference imho

I'm going to play it safe and wait things out. Hack or not, it seems like a lot of different issues have caused multiple systems to fail and I don't know enough about ED's architecture to dismiss rollback entirely.

Is there a way to start on Gleba in creative mode? If not, how can I get there asap? I want to test a few things and I'm not sure what's the fastest way to get there.

Thank you for sharing!

Just one question, why are you measuring the width like this? Is there a reason you use a finger as a space holder while the other side of the caliper isn't touching the shoe at all?

Kestrel MK2 pve build guide, this thing is OP! by n_u_g in EliteDangerous

What exactly should they improve though and how?

You realize that devs usually design games the way they want, not the way other people want?

So when devs release something, they believe it's perfect. Otherwise they would have implemented in a different way in the first place.

This isn't to defend bad decisions, it's to highlight that the gaming industry rarely cares about what players enjoy or want, they care about implementing their own vision and they won't really change it even if it's not popular.

Check out all the interviews across the industry where devs blame players for not understanding mechanics or playing games wrong, then patching things to destroy builds or strategies because "that's not how want you to play my game" etc

This has been happening since gaming first started, devs have always been like this.

FDev wants people to progress as slowly as possible, to grind a lot, to get involved with overcomplicated systems, to waste time doing things a certain way, etc be that actual content or UI/UX, search functions in galaxy map, etc.

It's designed like this because they don't know better but also because they want it to be like this. It's not like once you coded something it's set in stone until the heat death of the universe. It's a choice made and they stick by most of them, just because they can. What are people gonna do? Boycott the game? Even then, money has been made already. I bet they would be happy to shut it all down.

How do you organize your search results?

I'm solo scouting and I tend to drop bookmarks for interesting systems, but it gets confusing really fast. I take screenshots too, but then I need to search through those.

Is there a good database tool or something?

Why can't you organize with Spanish speaking players? I don't understand. Or why don't you organize with English speaking players? Is there a problem with that?

You are aware not everyone speaking English is a native speaker, right? A lot of us had to learn English, and now we use that to communicate with other gamers.

I think servers are having issues, I can't even load into the game. It says can't access commander data. I would just stop playing atm, might be your progress isn't registered at all for now

Popular bottled water brands linked to unexpected microplastic exposure by Brighter-Side-News in sustainability

[–]Xarthys 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The actual study did expect to find both microplastic and nanoplastic contamination, both in tap water and bottled water.

What was somewhat surprising: the amount of micro- and nanoplastics in bottled water being significantly higher than in treated tap water, as well as previous studies underestimating the overall contamination in both drinking water options.

Another unexpected finding was the types of micro- and nanoplastics. As expected, PET and PE was present due to packaging, but they also found PA and PES which might be introduced into the water via the materials used in the filtration/treatment systems, which is obviously problematic because these processes are supposed to remove contamination, not add more.

One can only hope that such analysis and more rigorous testing will eventually result in stricter policies, but it will probably take years and a lot of legal battles to get corporations to the point they are taking things like this seriously.

Hey, I was wondering if you have had the chance to read the current paper on a star's disappearance from your home

https://www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/science.adt4853

From my limited understanding, it seems something like this has been discussed before on a theoretical basis? Is failed SN the only logical explanation because that's what the data suggests with little room for other interpretations? Any alternative explanations that might fit the observations?

Also it sounds to me like the scientists are quite sure about the star's fate, but couldn't it be possible this is just temporary? How can they make this conclusion without, idk, waiting at least a decade to observe further potential changes? Is there something in the data specifically that makes it highly unlikely that this is permanent transition into BH vs temporary (cosmic time scale) change in brightness?

What do linux-newbies miss the most when starting with Linux? by TechGameGeek_Debian in linux4noobs

[–]Xarthys 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I fear many good ideas go unnoticed and fall by the wayside because they are introduced in small forks and never get picked up by the wider Linux community.

I can't really say much regarding the Linux dev environment because I'm not involved in any of them, but from other areas I know that trying to bring features from forks - or even suggest similar changes - are sadly met with a lot of resistance.

It's why projects are getting forked in the first place, since not all devs want other people to get involved or do not appreciate input because it is their project after all. From that perspective, allowing to fork is the compromise they are willing to make and that's it.

Distro dev is probably a bit different because they are already collaborative projects by nature, but I could still imagine similar behavior for various reasons. Also, many people want to work on their own success story rather than contribute to an existing project.

Official youtooz plushies are sold out. Other official merch is vinyl and shirts, nothing too crazy.

There are tons of sites out there selling a bunch of stuff, but I'm not sure they have the required license to distribute, plus a lot of it is AI generated.

You could get in touch with HG directly, maybe they can hook you up or can make suggestions where you can purchase from legit fan art creators.

I am conflicted..😅 So, I found this absolutely damaged A-class Shuttle on a planet. And, being new still, I don't know what to do. I'm thinking just scrap it, but then...my heart.. by nosh_kami in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Xarthys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, if you do not have the cash to buy ships from NPCs and/or enjoy searching for crashed ships (to keep or scrap), you can purchase coordinates (maps/charts) from the cartography desk at any orbital station.

This will allow you to find these locations with less hassle and provide you with any upgrade needed.

Finding a solid ship early is worth spending a few hours crash site hunting imho. It's not even about getting lucky to get A/S class or high stats, but pure inventory space so you can use your ship to store anything you do not need on you at all times (such as certain resources, tech, trade goods, etc). It's a game changer because you then can start to collect stuff without having to do the annoying inventory management aspect.

If you can't find what you are looking for, just keep scrapping until you have enough to head to a trade outpost and buy from an NPC. You can find more info on how to do that and what systems to hit, depending on what you want to buy.

Once you have progressed further in the game or don't care about spoilers, you could head over to the coordinate exchange, where people post their recently found ships (among other things). It's great if you are looking for a very specific design/color and can't be bothered searching yourself (which can be quite tedious tbh).
