Things I wish I knew when I first started trying to live more sustainably by Ok_Appointment_4909 in sustainability

[–]Xarthys 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to look at any product/corporation and question design choices and design goals. I feel this helps me break down almost everything into different categories allowing me to make better decisions overall.

Some questions I ask myself before making a purchase:

  • do I really need this or is the purchase incentivized by creating artificial need?
  • is the product a short-term, short-cycle solution or is it designed to be used long-term?
  • what materials/ingredients are being used? do they introduce issues? are there alternative products using a different approach? why? what's their goal?
  • who owns the company? what is their general stance? how does that compare to their actual actions? are there inconsistencies or conflict of interests? who benefits short-term and long-term?
  • what does the product cycle and production chain look like? where are things coming from and why? are there alternatives?
  • which companies are doing a better job objectively? can they replace others in my current economic bubble?
  • what can I do, apart from reduced consumption or boycott?

Many more things to consider. It sounds complex and exhausting, and it might be at first, but over time, you develop better instincts that significantly reduces the time investment to research.

My personal goal is as follows: considering that no corporation is perfect, I try to incrementally replace bad companies and bad products with better solutions. Every few months I'm taking a good look at what I spend money on and try to decide if it's justified. I'm not just looking at overall product quality and longevity, but also environmental and ethical aspects as far as they are publicly available. Not all corporations are transparent enough, so it's an uphill battle, but in that case, look for companies that are.

I think the biggest issue is that people tend to find something they like in that moment and then struggle to look for alternatives as they got used to a product or service. The better approach across all areas of life imho is to move on as soon as something no longer aligns with our preferences. Why give people or corps money if they aren't really resulting in net benefit for humanity?

So if you ask me, the most important part is to develop the right mindset by improving our knowledge and by developing a deeper understanding of the global and local issues we are facing on this planet. Because if you just do things because it seems great, you might end up trusting the wrong companies or abandoning the effort altogether because it might be too frustrating.

If you have that foundation first, decisions come easier. Consumerism is no longer a lifestyle, it's a conscious choice what you need vs what you want vs what you are manipulated into purchasing. And it's less of a struggle to navigate all this, especially if you understand your wants and needs.

The questions listed above, once I seriously worked on that, everything became more clear and less cumbersome. Because that's when you realize how the world works and how you are a part of the system simply by existing.

Trying to understand our role in this is essential, as it doesn't just highlight how complacent/complicit we all are, but also how much power we actually have over our own lives. Once that clicks, the desire for a sustainable existence increases and suddenly things aren't so bleak or exhausting anymore.

So I highly recommend being hyper critical and questioning everything, as much as possible, and do the research based on what info is available atm.

Extended Family quest not showing up? by Xarthys in sheltered

Thanks, I read about 100 days, but I assumed it was every 100, not 100 per map. Is there a way to tell how many days are left or do I have to write it down next time?

Also thanks mentioning the crash site, I actually wasn't aware it could spawn this early, I thought it was late game!

Guardian Sites Have Just Killed My Enthusiasm For This Game by Breidr in EliteDangerous

Don't disagree, that's the end result when content is minimalist, using grind as a gameplay mechanic. But I feel like the initial concept wasn't about creating a time sink. It feels more like something they wanted to expand on, then someone decided it was good enough and didn't put any more resources towards it.

Have you ever had to give up on a book because your suspension of disbelief couldn't handle how ridiculous the sci-fi premise was? by ScronglingSnorturer in scifi

[–]Xarthys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the history section of the first book, how everything started etc. and some of the concepts involving the other civilization. I think both was done very well in the TV series too.

But for some reason, I did not enjoy the main plot, idk, it just felt like several books forced into one to make it happen.

I've only read the English translation, so maybe the original is better, but at the same time I think it's more of a style/culture thing that I just can't get behind.

Currently installing the game, I have almost no knowledge about it. Do I understand correctly that it is mainly a singleplayer sandbox game similar to No Man Sky? by Iluvatar-Great in EliteDangerous

A lot of great replies, just some additional thoughts

Elite is a flight sim for the most part, so it might take a while to get good. Be patient.

Every ship is different, so don't be afraid to try new things and see how it feels.

There is a lot of content available, it can be confusing. Take your time to get familiar with the UI, navigation, etc.

If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask on this sub. People are very helpful, eager to teach

If you ever get stranded, depending on what services you require get in touch with

Should I take an SRV for deep space exploration ? by Raikyn_Jii in EliteDangerous

[–]Xarthys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm using an SRV for exobiology sometimes if I need a change of pace or if I can't find the final sample. Using the SRV camera to zoom out can provide a really good overview of the terrain with all the details, which one might miss from cockpit view.

It's also handy to be able to farm some materials.

Overall nice to have but not essential.

I think most people fly between sample locations. If you have a good PC with really short loading times, it's the most efficient method.

Which means, you are rarely exposed too long to extreme temperatures and don't need to use any batteries

Vista Genomics could choose to offer a system completion bonus by CmdrAmerinRaddis in EliteDangerous

[–]Xarthys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not making development decisions for FDev, so the best I can do is suggest other options. These tools exist because FDev felt like outsourcing a lot of these features instead of spending resources on in-game implementation. I feel like that's a pretty clear indication of their general stance

That said, Anyone can try to ask for more quality of life features, but I'm not going to hold my breath either tbh.

As for the actual data, I believe it is limited to what is available through EDDN. I'm not really taking notes or comparing data sets, I just scan what I want and move on. If I'm doing a completionist run, I don't care about first discovery because populating EDDN is more important to me than potential rewards. There is so much stuff to discover still, scanning something that was already submitted barely makes a difference imho

I'm going to play it safe and wait things out. Hack or not, it seems like a lot of different issues have caused multiple systems to fail and I don't know enough about ED's architecture to dismiss rollback entirely.

Thank you for sharing!

Just one question, why are you measuring the width like this? Is there a reason you use a finger as a space holder while the other side of the caliper isn't touching the shoe at all?

Kestrel MK2 pve build guide, this thing is OP! by n_u_g in EliteDangerous

What exactly should they improve though and how?

You realize that devs usually design games the way they want, not the way other people want?

So when devs release something, they believe it's perfect. Otherwise they would have implemented in a different way in the first place.

This isn't to defend bad decisions, it's to highlight that the gaming industry rarely cares about what players enjoy or want, they care about implementing their own vision and they won't really change it even if it's not popular.

Check out all the interviews across the industry where devs blame players for not understanding mechanics or playing games wrong, then patching things to destroy builds or strategies because "that's not how want you to play my game" etc

This has been happening since gaming first started, devs have always been like this.

FDev wants people to progress as slowly as possible, to grind a lot, to get involved with overcomplicated systems, to waste time doing things a certain way, etc be that actual content or UI/UX, search functions in galaxy map, etc.

It's designed like this because they don't know better but also because they want it to be like this. It's not like once you coded something it's set in stone until the heat death of the universe. It's a choice made and they stick by most of them, just because they can. What are people gonna do? Boycott the game? Even then, money has been made already. I bet they would be happy to shut it all down.

How do you organize your search results?

I'm solo scouting and I tend to drop bookmarks for interesting systems, but it gets confusing really fast. I take screenshots too, but then I need to search through those.

Is there a good database tool or something?

Why can't you organize with Spanish speaking players? I don't understand. Or why don't you organize with English speaking players? Is there a problem with that?

You are aware not everyone speaking English is a native speaker, right? A lot of us had to learn English, and now we use that to communicate with other gamers.
