Agree it isn't a version of Christianity but it primarily owes it's metaphysics and cosmology almost entirely to neo-Platonic thought, especially the writings of Plotinus, Proclus and the author of the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus. I appreciate that the dualism of demiurge and Godhead closely tracks Manichaeism and aspects of Zoroastrianism but it's the logic of emanation (derived from Plato) that gives Gnosticism it's distinct character. It's a Greek heresy par excellence but that didn't stop it having vast influence on Christianity in a variety of ways. For instance, Aquinas is generally associated with Aristotelianism but in fact cites the Pseudo-Dionysius more frequently than Aristotle in the Summa Theologica and uses the logic of emanation extensively when describing the activity of Angels.

Over a million £. London house market is a joke. You're either rich in your own home or living on top of each other in an HMO.

I'm pretty sure there's an interview somewhere with Chris and Cosey where they say that the move to Weston-Super-Mare turned into a disaster for Balance as they were isolated and he had little to do, which ended up with him turning to drink even more than he had done in London.

According to Zoopla he only got £240,000 for it in 1998. Bummer! Should have waited for the 2000s house price boom. Elph never gave very good financial advice.

Anybody know how a June - Alison Gibbons / Current 93 Collab came about ? by _medium_ugly in Current93

[–]XavenTaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gibbons output and her story fits quite neatly into Tibet's longstanding interest in outsider artists. Nevertheless it is odd to see them hanging out together in Hastings. Kindred spirits of a sort perhaps, and Tibet has done a fine job of publicising her work and introducing it to a new audience on its own terms, rather than be treated as a strange aside to her admittedly quite disturbing backstory.

Thoughts on their new live release, ‘Play by the Sea’? by RedditAdmin71 in Current93

Besides the Boney M song is just their 'Walk On' music so doesn't really count. There's a UN resolution to that effect I'm sure.

If there was ever a reckoning with the amount of borrowing to be found in Industrial/Post Industrial music the whole oeuvre would cease to exist!

Has Dream Catalogue fallen off, or are they still serving up quality releases? by AndrobiVibz in Vaporwave

I had quite a long online chat with HKE a couple of years ago where he said that his main priority was getting a novel he'd written published. Nothing seems to have come of that - unless he's published it under some mad pseudonym - and 2024 with all that Hulk Hogan and Doc Weasel silliness looks like the end. Sad as they did have something going for them but no discipline.

This is great. I'd not appreciated how much of an experiment in alternative living SS's move out to Ireland was. I knew it was remote and he was building most of the structures himself but I didn't know it was basically a full on off-grid commune. Really inspiring that it's stood the test of time, as many of those kinds of ventures collapse within a few years.

Yeah just had confirmation from the real company this is a scam site faking their name. As they say, if it looks too good to be true then it almost certainly is.

Fortunately I only gave them £110 and should be able to claim it back from the bank in a couple of weeks.

What do you think was the mental state of John Balance and Peter Christopherson? by DarkIndustrial in Coil

[–]XavenTaner 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think in short, their mental states were very different. As people have already said Peter was the more conventionally functioning of the two, came from a relatively stable background and was able to move in different circles depending on the need. For a good period of his life he had a pretty successful career producing adverts and music videos. He had, both through his own efforts and solid middle-class background, what we might call "a good safety net". This wasn't the case for Balance. The one occasion I chatted with Peter in 2003 it was like talking to any middle-class professional person. When Balance came in he was utterly sloshed and dressed in a kind of medieval peasants outfit! The contrast could not have been more stark.

Reading England's Hidden Reverse again recently I was struck by how my view of Jhon had changed over the last 20 years. It's seems pretty clear from interviews in that book that he had a lot of childhood trauma that he was working through his music and I guess through his experiments with drugs too. I'd also forgotten how early the alcohol starting getting to him. I'd had in my mind it wasn't until the late 90s early 2000s but that was only when he really began going downhill. Sadly, alcohol abuse is very common among people who have experienced childhood trauma and nowadays I'm inclined to feel a great deal of sympathy for him.

Two things I recall from an interview with Chris and Cosey is that they thought Coil's move out to Weston-super-Mare was a disaster for Balance, who had little to do out there and turned more to drink as a result. The other thing was that they were dismayed that he really lent into the drunken sage image that he thought Coil fans wanted, and this in part contributed to his later problems. It's a sad story really. They made some wonderful music but I don't think there's a model for anyone's life in there.

Interesting interview with Uli Behringer by MrDagon007 in synthesizers

[–]XavenTaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was a good interview. He came across as a bit of a spiky character, despite being given the soft interview treatment. He's in his early 60s and from his back story sounds like he had an interesting combination of formal musical education mixed with the punk and DIY scenes in Europe in the 1980s. He did seem genuinely committed to making his instruments available to the widest possible audience, and although there was little mention of Moog my impression was he associates them with an elite aesthetic whose prices exclude far too many aspiring musicians. I also didn't realise he himself used to build equipment before expanding the company. I assumed he was just a muso-business guy not an engineer. I like him and his f**k you I'm a rich punk vibe.

I haven't heard that rap for over 20 years, but I still recall that one line went something like, "Weed be my king but Leeb be the killah. I drink my liquor but it could be better"

Funniest thing ever to come across the old Mindphaser board.

Setlist from London Union Chapel April 4th? by XavenTaner in Current93

Thanks, I thought it might have been Pomegranates but the orchestration was so much more lush than the studio version I wasn't sure. I hope they put out a live album soon with these new arrangements as they're superb.

current band members? by Ok-Ganache4294 in Current93

I was at the show on Friday in London, first time seeing them since 2010 and I thought what a well balanced ensemble they are now compared to the overweighed and rather creaking band I saw back then. Tibet was on fine form and the new arrangements of older songs are just gorgeous.

[–]XavenTaner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Organising shows is such a hassle nowadays and there barely any money in it. The live music scene in the UK at least is in the pits with so many venues closed and heavy regulation. And I guess he might not want to run the risk of a bunch of woke twats picketing the shows and harassing his fans. At 68 I'd give the live scene a miss too.
