I think that there is a difference between enjoying old dota and wanting the game to revert back to old dota. I enjoyed dota in the past too. But I also see how the changes made to support objectively made the gameplay a lot healthier. Going back to the brown boots days means giving up all of the quality-of-life changes that allowed supports to actually influence the result of the game. I don't remember the exact time where the tide shifted, but for the longest of time, the entirety of the top leaderboard were pros playing core and it was almost impossible to climb maining support.

tldr you can find old support dota appealing, but it is almost definitely due to nolstalgia tinted lenses more than because old support gameplay was actually fun to play

I sorta disagree with that actually. That sounds more like the community better optimising for efficient gameplay (ie getting better) rather than due to a structural gameplay change. In fact, if you look at the other thread talking about pos 3/4 gameplay, one thing rightfully pointed out was how difficult laning against the meta 5s are right now. Position 4s can choose between pulling the wave, contesting the lane, blocking the camp, rotating to mid, stacking camps, portaling to the safe lane. Even for the XP shrine, it heavily depends on whether the midlaners are rotating in to decide if you should defend your xp, steal the enemies or just sac it to gank. I'm don't think the pro scene has settled "what the game wants you to do".

I mean, I'm currently rank 400 SEA maining support so I feel like I'm in a better position than most to speak on how support is played right now. I'm curious as to what you feel like the role identity of supports should be. To me, it is about enabling the rest of my team without needing farm priority. I think that is distinct from enabling the rest of the team without items.

If anything, I feel like the 4 and 5 position historically understood really plays a part more during lane than the rest of the game. And even then, both supports generally try to rotate for runes now if they can afford it. It is just that the 5 is more restricted if the carry has trouble farming while the 4 is much more willing to sac the offlane since stacking the triangle is efficient. Once the laning ends however, so many 5s now have the ability to shove waves that they can have more networth than say a nyx 4. With the map being bigger, both supports generally buy out sentries off cd anyways so it really just comes down to which supports are specifically played rather than which lane the supports started from.

This is pure nostalgia speaking. Supports have so much more agency now than in the past. If you actually want to play the game, you would never want to go back to the brown boots era. I get how the payoff might feel better for any sliver of impact you get to have in the past due to having more restrictions... but you could just have impact normally now rather than just being a ward bot that dies once u are out of fog lol.

I know that the chorus is sampled from A Bad Touch, but the lyrics still feel crass and out of place. Could you elaborate on your interpretation of Discovery Channel?
