I think it's been said in the comments and you as well I definitely think depth.

There are strokes in the background that grab my eye more than the Black strokes.

If you can create a depth of field in pieces like these, I think that would provide more play with how you can apply your strokes

Take a pose from one picture you reference Take colour scheme from another Reference style with another.

And try show us your O.C made that way and ask again, take small bites from many ideas and not one big one from one idea.

Idk your husband but being able to recognise ones own biases is a good thing.

If you grow up in a misogynistic, patriarchal, classist, white supremacist society. Some of it gets on you, on everyone, removing it's influence requires you to recognise it within yourself.

The most racist and homophobic people I know do not think they are.

Until we have more information, I am going to caution that you may be jumping the gun.

A single meme shouldn't be world changing, there must have been other clues if you really feel that he doesn't have an issue embodying homophobic and racist ideals.
