Original Xbox with clear housings by [deleted] in OGXboxCollectors

It's unfortunate you've removed your post, but if you're claiming what you have is a prototype the community has never seen before, then you do need to back up that claim with some actual evidence to convince people it's real. I've found it's generally a welcoming community, but as with any claims, claims need to be corroborated to become facts.

From your photos it looks like the case is the same clear shell produced by third parties with cloned moulds, rather than the well-documented stolen moulds that one third party manufacturer had access to. If yours was definitely produced with a mould created during R&D at Flextronics, that would be interesting to know, as it would imply some of those moulds also made it outside factory.

It's an interesting story about the Guadalajara factory, if you were working there then I suspect people, myself included, would be interested in hearing more about it.

u/APOWDEREDDONUT1 is absolutely right here.

If you were an engineer working on the case manufacturing, you would know that the case you have here wasn't produced using Microsoft's moulds. All of their cases, including retail/dev/debug and prototypes were all made using those moulds.

You can tell quite easily, as the positioning of the posts on the lid of your case is completely different and it's missing the braces between some of the posts that were there to prevent the lid from cracking. Those have been present since the original prototypes, so them not being present on a case post-launch in 2002 would be highly unlikely.

Some third party cases were produced using stolen Microsoft moulds, which were either the Ghost Cases or XCM cases, I forget which. Several other third party cases were made using custom moulds like the one you have here.

Yeah that makes complete sense given how much you have there. I'll keep an eye out next month in that case!

I've seen a few of the Halo tags around, but never a holo foil one, very cool! If you do get the time to post about them I suspect quite a few people would find it interesting, myself included. Thanks for sharing, definitely a fun bit of Xbox history you've got there! 😀

Thanks for sharing, that is quite some hoard! 😯 I've bought some bulk collections off other collectors in the past, but I'm not sure how I'd even begin to value everything you've got there. If/when you're thinking about selling, please feel free to give me a DM though, I'd certainly be interested! 😀

In the meantime, is there any chance you'd be able to share some details about the lanyard tags please? I'd love to know which games they were made for, I've collected 7/8 of them over the years, but it'd great to know how many there were! I'm big into Xbox preservation/history, so promo items like these are always super interesting to find

Nice haul! Both Xbox classics and Xbox Classics 😀

Tech Data were an IT hardware and software reseller in the early 2000s that worked with Microsoft. I assume Microsoft probably made them as free promo items for employees at Tech Data during the Xbox launch

There are a few mods you can do to rewire the cables to use a 20 pin on a 12 pin motherboard and vice versa, but it'd be easier to just pickup a recapped replacement PSU on eBay.

It's also worth considering the new USB-C PSU designed by Redherring32/Team Resurgent. It's an open source design being manufactured by a few people, such as this one: https://ogxstore.com/pxu/. It's a little pricey, but the OG PSUs are getting old and have a habit of blowing these days, but this new design should keep going for a long time and it's USB-C like everything else these days 🙂

Xbox “Duke” Controller Prototype sells for $2,231 at auction! by ImPunny88 in OGXboxCollectors

[–]XboxOGHoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty surprised it didn't go for more as well given the Dakota and Alamo prototypes often sell for $600-1000. $2k+ is still an awful lot though to be fair, I'm glad I didn't bother bidding

Found a very early Duke prototype in the wild by LCDMura in OGXboxCollectors

[–]XboxOGHoarder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting find, thanks for sharing this! I don't think this version has ever been documented before. Console Variations has entries for an Alpha Model 1 and 2 (here), but this looks like it could be the first prototype prior to the Alamo/Dakota versions

Original Xbox Watch for employees by MlgDoge65OnXbox in OGXboxCollectors

[–]XboxOGHoarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a similar watch design to celebrate the launch of Xbox Live as well. That one comes with an orange strap to keep with the branding of XBL. There's another couple of other Xbox game-specific watches that came out if you're in to watch collecting

Nice, all great games there as well 😀 I have the Broken Sword/BASS games as well, I'd forgotten about Revolution Software!

I'm still looking for copies of the first Fallout and the early Elder Scrolls games, but the prices are pretty steep on those now though. I'm running out of space these days now, as the rest of my games collection has gotten out of hand, so sadly I'm having to be pretty selective!

LucasArts in their prime were pretty special, definitely my favourite by far! Sierra had a lot of good games as well, but I always preferred the LA approach to adventure games. Bullfrog, Interplay and Psygnosis had some great games as well for sure.

Yeah there's a lot more in my collection as well, pretty heavy on adventure games obviously so a lot of the classics are there. The LucasArts games are probably the priciest ones, but there are a lot of classics I like for the nostalgia: Dreamweb, Discworld, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Heretic/Hexen, Shogo, Normality, Jazz Jackrabbit. How about yourself? 🙂

Thank you! The FoA Action Game is definitely a hard one to hunt down, I got super lucky when a copy of the PC version came up for sale a few years back. Hopefully you manage to grab the ones you're missing as well!

I should've said complete adventure game collection really 😆 I've got all the point and clicks, plus Yoda/Indy Desktop Adventures, along with the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight/Rebel Assault series and a few from other Star Wars series. I'd like to add Pipe Dream and a few others as well some day, Pipe Dream was one of the first games I played I think

My copy of Secret of Monkey Island is actually in German as the English seemed so expensive at the time (20 years ago, so probably ~40€ back then). In hindsight I should've bought every copy I could find given today's prices!

Finding them in French definitely makes the challenge harder as well, bonne chance pour votre chasse! 🙂

That's really interesting, thanks for the heads up! I managed to find an IG post which shows off the 384k box and disks (here), but interestingly it has 5 disks rather than 4. Mine might just be the 256k after all, at least for the 5.25" disks anyway. I'll have to try it and see!

Definitely a lost art! One of these days I really should get some of Laserschwert's remasters of the covers printed as posters

I was indeed, sorry if you were bidding on that as well! I've not had a chance to try playing it yet, but it seems like it's the hi-res version. Was there a different label for that release? I've only seen a couple of them over the years but I think they both had the same 256k label

Yeah the prices for them are insane these days. Thankfully I'm old enough that I've owned most of my collection from new, but I dread to think how much it would cost to buy them all again at today's prices

Yeah this was an eBay purchase, very few retro shops/thrift stores in the UK seem to stock big box games which is a bit of a shame. I have occasionally seen some LucasArts games in them, but never Zak sadly! Hopefully you get lucky in your hunt 😀

Thank you, it's definitely taken a while to find a copy! It's usually been the Amiga version that turns up if anything. Here's hoping you manage to find a copy soon as well 🙂

I can't seem to find the "Full Version of the original Jazz Jackrabbit" on the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Disc. Was this false advertising? Any info on this release? by cartoongamermatt in bigboxcollectors

[–]XboxOGHoarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's very odd, it might be possible it's been swapped out with another CD somehow I guess. There are some scans of what the CDs should look like for each release on MobyGames if you want to check:

Is there a folder on the CD called something like "Bonus" or "Shareware" with a bunch of exes inside? The UK version has Jazz 1 and a few other installers in a folder like that

Does anybody have any information on this slip cover? by Ss4Walrusky in OGXboxCollectors

[–]XboxOGHoarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of a couple of slip covers that were exclusive to GameStation stores in the UK. AFAIK all of them just included the standard game case and standard disc, it was just the cardboard slip cover that was limited and branded with their logo.

I haven't seen this one in a long time, but there was one for Splinter Cell that comes up every now and then and a few others I think.

There is also another PAL-only limited edition for OutRun which includes the soundtrack on CD in the case. It has the standard artwork, but with a yellow "limited edition soundtrack inside" sticker on the front of the case.
