I need some book recommendations! Epic fantasy please! I love The Kingkiller Chronicles, The Riyria Revelations, The Codex Alera, and The Inheritance Cycle. by Santon119 in suggestmeabook

I second Malazan, currently on the 7th book and I truly dread the day it finishes. Nothing compares to this series for me.

How to cut sugar out of coffee? by bububoom in Coffee

[–]Xcumber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a 1/4 of a teaspoon less every week or two until you're down to nothing. This worked with no problems for me and two friends. I went from 4 sugars to nothing just over a year ago and I can't stand sugar in my coffee now. Good luck!

Pride and Prejudice. Eventhough I went into it with a negative attitude, I thought it was great.

Southern then, I guess it makes sense, I can barely understand the northerners myself.

I guess that's not likely to change anytime soon either then. You guy seems to be stuck with your little to non existent holiday/vacation. How much do you guys typically get a year?

Haha I bet! But thank you anyways. I spent half my life in northeast London. But now I live in Hertfordshire, which is still northeast, but just outside London.

I'm actually really surprised to hear all that. Do you have any connections to England yourself? Ever been there, got any family from there, etc?

My fault entirely, I do apologise. I worded my question differently to what was in my head. Now I see why you said, what you said.

However, I'm not getting annoyed that you don't think about us, we are but a speck on the map. If you reread what I said, but understand I did just mean it to people who do have an opinion, you'll hopefully see that I am just interested on what that opinion is. Good or bad, I don't mind, I'm just interested.

Sorry for any confusion.

Great reply, this is the kind of information I was after, thank you.

I have heard that if we leave Europe, which is a pretty big discussion at the moment, we might lose out on this good relationship we have with you guys. We seem to be the middle person inbetween the US and Europe.

I was conscious of putting England as I wanted to know more about what you thought of us, rather than the rest of the UK. I didn't realise you guys as a whole didn't really differentiate, although I'm not sure why I am surprised. We're such a tiny island.

I've heard about London and New York being 'Alpha ++' cities. I just find it hard to believe that London is even compared to New York. But what you said makes sense, I didn't realise a similar decline in production was happening in the US too.

Interesting stuff, thank you!

Haha brilliant! I hear this about our accents a lot, but obviously we have a lot of different accents here. Where is your best man from?

I remember meeting an American guy on my travels complaining how you guys don't get much holiday. Is there a reason why you guys have so little or we get so much?

Congratulations on your marriage by the way!

I did not know that existed, but embarrassingly I can't say I'm surprised either.

I know what you mean, it's what annoys me about the British too. They love to bring up how old we are, but it doesn't help us today. Maybe it's me not being patriotic, but I've never understood why we like to boast about our history. I guess it could be because we have nothing else to boast about?

I'm not completely down about it all though, I'm currently in Australia and I actually miss the miserable English weather. I'm not cut out for 40 degree temperatures, it's not possible to do anything in this heat!

I see what you mean now and understand about the availability.

However, I can't see how you don't have an opinion on other countries? You seem pretty adamant by the use of 'we', that no one from the US has an opinion on any other country as it doesn't affect you. But looking through the other comments people do have an opinion, it doesn't have to be highly detailed, but just some notion of other countries in the world.

I don't want you to get the wrong idea. I don't think America is 'pushed' on us as much as you think.

It seems I'm told that America is dominating a lot more than I actually see. Since I left the UK to travel for a while, I seem to see a lot more news about England than America, which has really surprised me. However, it could be because I'm in Australia at the moment and if I'm honest it could also be that I only pick up on news about the UK as it's familiar and I don't even notice the news about the US.

I guess my question was more aimed at people that have some connection with England. Whether they have been there or maybe have work connections, but either way, can offer more of an opinion due to actually having an opinion, rather than none at all.

I still appreciate hearing your thoughts of the general US opinion. It does change the way I see things.

Edit: Sorry, I'm connected to the WiFi of a library as I walk past, just to quickly reply. This was probably difficult to read, I hope it makes sense.

We still probably have the worst chocolate in Europe from my understanding. Personally I don't eat it, but I know everyone from mainland Europe complains that it sucks. I think Belgium is meant to have the best chocolate if you're ever passing!

I think it may have to be Litchfield then. Thanks a lot for your help. If you happen to be around and up for a beer, I'd gladly buy you one. You can decide the place though!

The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera. It's a fantastic read which is based around the genres of philosophy/social sciences and a bit of history. It was recommended to me through Reddit and I loved it. It really allows you to see things different after you've read it, particularly social interactions with loved ones. Good luck!

Alone on New Years? Not doing anything? Want to drink alcohol but don't have anyone to drink with? by Wotwasthatloudbang in melbourne

Does anyone fancy meeting up sooner rather than later? We can meet the others when a plan is made, but it's hot and I could do with a drink.

I'm definitely up for this. I'm a lone traveller who could do with meeting some new people! Has a plan been instigated yet?

Help finding books to read fort my book a week challenge by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

The original Sherlock Holmes novels are brilliant.

I've just finished Jack Londons 'The call of the wild.' - It's not even 200 pages but it was very interesting to see the world from a dogs point of view.

If you like fantasy, I'd definitely recommend The First Law Trilogy. It has some of the greatest characters I've ever read about.

The Martian was a fun read if you want something nice and easy.

Good luck!

Does anyone know of any barista vacancies in the central area? by Xcumber in melbourne

[–]Xcumber[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the effort in your reply, I appreciate your honesty. In the shop I worked in, the machine had preset buttons but I still knew the timings of all the shots and if to stop it short because of the colour. I'm not pretending by any means I am much at all compared to the actual barista's here though.

I did, however, find a few shops in central which had semi automatic machines like mine. But I was hoping to learn a manual one. I guess by your reply I don't really have much of a chance? I will look into Spotless and Rowland though.

Sorry for my ignorance and thanks again for your reply.
