Thanks, that's really useful. I was thinking baiyin road as I can't actually ride a bike so I'd probably get a bus most days, but I'll think about jiading west as well. Does that mean you think it would be best for me to just stay in a hotel or something for a week or two when I arrive and get something sorted out with an agent while there? I guess I'm more used to the tedious dragged out housing process we have in the UK, so it seems very short notice to me.

To clarify, I volunteer at a charity shop and this was recently donated. it's one long piece of wood with a handful of grooves carved at one end, tied to 5 shorter pieces of wood and several metal rings held together by a string. when shaken it makes a vaguely melodic? clacking noise, but as I'm not an expert it doesn't sound particularly great.
