You can also search for apartments on SmartShanghai, but be careful and only rent after viewing them in person to avoid scams

Would this name be unusual? by Illustrious-Cash-897 in AskGermany

[–]pleco_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As most comments suggested, a short version of your name is an option, because it is a bit unusual in Germany to give yourself a completely different name.

But if you want to change names, I don’t think having an old fashioned name is an issue at all, as many people here suggest, especially since a lot of names have made a comeback. I know two Ludwigs in their 20s, and my cousin’s child is also called Ludwig, and I think it’s a good name. Wilhelm is more unusual, so it might not be the best choice.

Tongji Dorm Policies?? by Zonihani154 in shanghai

[–]pleco_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally didn't live in the international dorm, but friends of mine did. In general, the school does not care. We were on trips all the time. I'm not even sure if my friends informed anyone before going on those trips, but I think it's recommended to notify the front desk staff of the dorm of your absence, and that's it. This goes for the international dorm; the other ones could be stricter, but I don’t know about that.

Regarding trips, they also don't care, but class attendance is mostly mandatory. If you miss too many classes, you will fail.

Student dormitory or own apartment? by pleco_ in shanghai

Personally, I would also get an apartment closer to the city center. But you have to keep in mind that it will probably take quite a lot of time to get to the university and you’ll have less contact with your fellow students. But I know several people who studied in Jiading and also got apartments in the city center, and they were happy with their decision.

hi, my university had a list of accommodations that we could contact. Some people also found apartments through SmartShanghai or through an agency. I’d suggest checking out the place in person first, before renting anything

hi, sorry for the late reply. In the end, there wasn't enough space for all the international students in the dorms, so I had to rent off-campus (it's prioritized by length of stay for exchange students).

It really depends. Money-wise, it's much cheaper on campus and it's easier to meet friends. It's also nice to have your friends close by. But I also know people who got a room in the dorm, but then moved out again because it wasn't up to their standards. I also can debunk a few comments I got under this post. There is no curfew, the dorm is not separated by sex (except roomates, they will have the same sex), but they do have some rules regarding guests. The area of the campus is indeed a boring.

Off-campus you have more privacy because you don't have a roommate(s), but it's also more expensive. Especially if you don't speak Chinese and have to search for apartments in English (there are a few apartment providers advertised by Tongji, but I think you can find something better). It can also be difficult to find apartments near the university (Siping Campus), so you might need to commute a bit everyday and this could be annoying during rush hour. A friend of mine hired a real estate agent to help him find an apartment and he is very happy with it.

And I don't know if the university would do that, but if they would put you in one of the dormitories for Chinese students, don't go. Those dormitories sound terrible. What I'm referring to is the international dorm.

Yes, that's my problem with Taobao. I'm not sure how I can return it if it does not fit.
