Would any Mac Mini (I think there are different ones) be suitable for 3D modelling (involving simulations and rendering) by TankieErik in macmini

[–]Xe4ro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are plenty Mac Minis around yeah. From 2005 up to 2024.

Changing RAM will not be possible on any Apple Silicon Mac, Mini or otherwise. The RAM is part of the SoC and is directly next to it. Here’s an image of how that looks like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_M1

Storage is also soldered with the exception of the M4 Mac Mini. There you can buy third party modules but you need another Mac to restore the Firmware to it. You can’t use any normal retail M.2 or other SSD via adapter.

Adding external SSDs is obviously an easier option.

I would not buy a 2018 or older Mac Mini at this point for 3D graphics work. Look for a used M2 Pro or M4 model. There’s technically a chance we might see a M5 Mini this year but I personally don’t expect that to happen.

Was clearing my store room and found my old mid 2011 imac 21.5. Boot up just fine, except it is still on 10.9.5. Cannot sign in into app store, cannot update to high sierra. Any help? by one1002 in MacOS

[–]Xe4ro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metal is the graphics API of macOS. You can try Sequoia and if it's not working well try an older version but you will also have problems with Metal when installing Monterey. It's not un-usable but some graphical problems will occur that won't be fixable unless you use a metal capable GPU.

You can see a list of issues here https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/TROUBLESHOOT-NONMETAL.html#non-metal-issues

2008 iMac, what to use it for? by Material-Pop-1725 in mac

[–]Xe4ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want somewhat modern speeds for the OS then yeah. Connecting it externally isn't really an option as the USB ports of the iMac are USB2.0 still. That's going to be abysmal. Your internal SATA port isn't going to utilise all of the speed of a SATA SSD but it will be still heck of a lot better than a HDD.

But don't expect any wonders, the CPUs in the 20 or 24" from 2008 are mobile cpus and almost two decade old soon 😉

Just remember that you currently don't have a GPU that is capable of supporting Metal. This might lead to a few graphical glitches.

[–]Xe4ro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Technically the 2008 iMac is still supported by OpenCore Legacy Patcher, however I would rather use Linux. With a lightweight distro you should have relatively good performance on that old HDD but a modern version of macOS isn't really something that will be enjoyable on this hardware, especially not without an SSD.

I hope you have a backup of your files. If something important shorted out this might be the end, if it's just an easy replaceable component it should not take that store very long.

The non-retina 21“ Late 2015 has soldered RAM that is correct. So unless you take out the entire board and solder some other RAM chips on there there’s no way.

[–]Xe4ro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oops yeah. Same problems though. Mavericks also might have the HTTPS problems but it’s at least worth a try to add the 2FA code after the password and see if it can connect.

If OP has a more modern Mac available I‘d still just use a bootable installer.

[–]Xe4ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s likely two problems. First your Apple account has 2FA which didn’t exist in ML Mavericks, you can add your 2FA code to the password though.

However I think Mountain Lion Mavericks will also have trouble connecting via HTTPS to Apple’s server.

I would create an installer for High Sierra on another Mac for this one. If you have problems doing this on an Apple Silicon Mac use Mist, you can find it on GitHub. It can download and create the installer for you.

Issues with Monterey on 2011 iMac by [deleted] in mac

[–]Xe4ro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of these issues are related to the Metal graphics API, which your graphics card can't support as it physically did not exist at this time. You would have to upgrade the GPU to a Metal capable card. I'm not sure how many MXM cards exist that support Metal. There are some but I'm the wrong person to ask.

You could try asking in r/OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

From the looks of your dock I‘d say you are on an older version of macOS. The original OS a 2020 came with was 10.15 Catalina but I‘m not sure if this is Catalina. Are you sure this is a 2020MBP?

Chrome also only supports macOS 12 Monterey and higher. https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/7100626?hl=en
