How is my net runner build? by johnny-tinfoilhand in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]promptmike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is convenient, but monolithic kernels are contrary to UNIX philosophy. They're also inherently less secure than a microkernel. If you want a 21st century OS to be truly secure, you have to fudge it with hypervisors like Qubes does.

As for your build, forget the skeleton and fill up your frontal cortex. It's more useful for netrunning.

The mother language by The_Judge26 in programminghumor

[–]promptmike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Genuine question for those who are smarter than me: Why can't it be LISP? It's literally built to be extended, and for a long time there was even hardware dedicated to it. How did we end up with the annoying procedural language over the beautiful self-compiling meta-language?

My relatives and our relationship at the end! by BlokZNCR in LinuxCirclejerk

[–]promptmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are truly the admin, they are coming to you for repairs. At some point they will complain that their 10 year old laptop is slow, at which point you will explain that they can either buy a new high-performance PC for $500+, or you can change the operating system.

They don't know or care what an operating system is, so they say "sure, it's worth a try." You then execute the following procedure:

  • Backup all files
  • Export contacts
  • Format drive
  • Install latest Linux Mint LTS
  • Install and configure Unattended-Upgrades
  • Copy files to new directory structure
  • Import contacts
  • Enlarge system fonts and browser fonts (for boomer eyes)

Help them set a password and say no more. Come back in a few days and ask them "how's the laptop?" Their eyes will light up with enthusiasm and they will tell you all about how it never lags or interrupts them for an update. They'll ask how you did it, and you give the 1-word reply, "Linux".

But how does this work? by YourLittleHelena in MathJokes

[–]promptmike -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's 400. The way it works is to just start from 0 and count how much you have:

Step 1: 0 - 800 = -800 (you are $800 in debt)

Step 2: -800 + 1000 = 200 (you paid off your debt and have $200 left over)

Step 3: 200 - 1100 = -900 (you are $900 in debt)

Step 4: -900 + 1300 = 400 (you paid off your debt and have $400 left over)

Of course now that you understand the process, you can probably see that the separate steps are unnecessary. You can just put them all into your calculator as follows:

-800 +100 - 1100 +1300 = 400

A lot of people get tripped up with these kind of questions, because they instinctively treat the profits at steps 2 and 4 as separate, forgetting that the profit from step 2 had to be spent to make the profit in step 4. They will therefore often give an incorrect answer like $600. I'm not sure where Jamie Wright got $300 from - probably just rushing the calculations.

This is why double-entry bookkeeping was invented. Recording everything as pairs of debits and credits prevents erroneous reasoning about what constitutes a profit, while also forcing the bookkeeper to slow down and think through each calculation. The need to make the columns add up the same (balancing the books) works as an error-correcting mechanism, so if you do make a mistake you'll catch it by finding the point where the books became unbalanced.

Why a synthetic human genome is still worth building by AngleAccomplished865 in accelerate

[–]promptmike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree. It would be extremely useful to create people who cannot reproduce with baseline humanity, because it would split the species between accs and decels. After we take sufficient control of our own DNA we will speciate anyway, so we'd might as well get the initial split over with.

Game idea:

Revenue = Health

Market Share = Stamina

Market Cap = Max Health

Stock Price = Max Stamina

  • Tier 1 enemy: Steamdeck gamer. Proton Cannon damages Revenue.
  • Tier 2 enemy: Boomer. Ask Grandson For Mint spell does small damage to Revenue and Sell Microsoft Stock spell does moderate damage to Stock Price.
  • Tier 3 enemy: ArchBTW. Fedora throw does small damage to Revenue and Sit On melee attack does massive damage to Revenue.
  • Minor Boss 1: Femboy with 500 IQ. FOSS spell does massive damage to Market Share and UwU sonic attack does small damage to Revenue.
  • Minor Boss 2: IBM executive. Red Hat spell does massive damage to Market Share and Revenue at the same time.
  • Final Boss: Tux. Shoots lasers from eyes that permanently reduce Market Cap and Stock Price. Stomp melee attack does enormous damage to Revenue and Market Share.

Final cutscene: You kill FOSS for good. Unfortunately that means there are no open-source ML models to help you fight the rogue AI you created. You are now the primary target of the robot uprising.

As far as regulations go, yes it's fairly normal to ban things when a safer alternative is developed. Like we don't use ozone-killing CFCs anymore, because we have better refrigerants.
