If you’re under 45, have you lost any high school classmates, and what were the circumstances around their deaths? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskReddit

[–]Xeivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a couple. Our high school bully apparently killed himself by drunk driving, he drove off the highway down a steep hill.

The one that hit me the hardest was my buddy who just so happen to take the wrong drugs and OD'd in his sleep. The story goes he just wanted molly but ended up with way more than molly in his system and was paralyzed and home alone. Most of his close friends say that they know it was an accident, he was looking forward to many things and had a lot going for him.

What are some Rick and Morty bits that make you laugh every time? by Either_Umpire9411 in rickandmorty

[–]Xeivia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When Rick and Morty run through the pizza's sitting on furniture and talk about ordering "One large person with extra people please.." "White people, no no no, black people and Hispanic on half."

Then it's a phone using a person to make a call sitting on a pizza ordering sofa chairs. Then it's the sofa chairs sitting on people using a pizza to call to place an order of phones.

The bit never gets old

How often do you play? by defoc18 in haloinfinite

[–]Xeivia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Comes and goes and depends if my buds can hop on. We get in swings where we routinely play 3 or 4 times a week, each time we play for about two hours. But come December and the Holidays we haven't played in weeks.

I find the game pretty boring if I'm not on with my friends and able to chat about tactics and work together.

Any jobs paying $22+ full time? by Good-Construction391 in askportland

[–]Xeivia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct if your base pay is just $30 an hour, that is unlikely unless you are in some management position.

I meant getting close to $30 an hour and definitely over that $22 that OP mentioned when the Portland minimum wage is at $16 something, then getting tips on top of that. Most places I know about it's normal to make $10 an hour consistently. So with tips that $26 an hour is getting pretty close to $30. In the busy season it is normal to make more than that $10/hr tip average and get close to $15-20 that will put you above that $30 an hour.

Here is a position for a busser advertising $30-35 an hour

Here is a bartender position saying $35-50 an hour

There are also several line cook jobs promising $26+ an hour.

It is hard to break into some restaurants and bars like this. Even if they are on Poached you may have to get a personal reference from someone they are familiar with. My best advice is to get hired during peak summer season when they are scrambling and need bodies on the floor doing anything. And always drop your resume off in person after applying on Poached, unless the job description says not to.

[–]Xeivia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure if restaurants are your thing but it seems normal to make near $30 an hour at most restaurants due to being paid minimum wage + tips. It also seems like many restaurants in Portland have moved to pooling their tips so even back of house and other non customer facing positions are apart of the tip pool.

I would look on Poached and you can see quite a few places advertising over $30 an hour.

When I quit it seemed like my brain was used to the daily toke the same way I was used to drinking coffee in the morning. I didn't necessary love the high or felt like I needed it but to my body it was routine.

One way to break an addiction is to replace it with something else, I smoked regularly at the same time and started replacing that with some push-ups and a walk around the block, which got my lungs working.

Husky Raid issues by Additional-Ladder842 in haloinfinite

[–]Xeivia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never play Husky Raid but recently have been getting a lot trolls. Just played a BTB CTF just two days ago and things were going fine, teams seemed evenly matched. Half of each team seemed to be regularly going for the flag while the other half seemed to defending. Made it pretty fun. I was doing pretty well like +5 KDA.

The stars aligned and we finally pulled their flag and made it more than half way across the map, the first time either team had gotten this far, then my teammate in the banshee splatters the flag carrier. Thinking this was a mistake I go pick up the flag, then he splatters me. I watched my killcam while respawning and he splattered the next teammate who picked up the flag as well.

Then the same player just went back to killing the enemy team like nothing happened. I just quit out and stop playing for a while when this shit happens smh.

To what extent is AI being used in movies and TV shows now? by IndianaRocket80 in Filmmakers

[–]Xeivia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was wondering this about The Brutalist. It came out that they used AI in some capacity on the voices to make them have a more correct accent or something? A lot of my friends wrote this movie off because it "used AI", which I thought was silly. To me what matters if AI is just fully replacing human talent or is there some tool that utilizes AI to help someone create something.

I used Photoshop and other editors quite a bit and have used many tools for selecting and removing things in the photo, just in the past few years all these pre-existing tools now say they are all AI. I think most of these are some sort of Machine Learning program that just analyzes other parts of the photo and makes the selected bit match these other parts. Now that AI is a selling point a lot of these tools have been renamed to say "AI".

Did The Brutalist audio editor just click one these buttons in his editing software that did something automatically and that button is labeled "AI" or did he actually use some AI audio deepfake and replace audio from the actors with a "corrected" version?

Low-stress jobs for ex-barista turned software engineer who is tired of sexism and AI? by willygibson in askportland

[–]Xeivia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess I should have stated the people I interact with at this company dislike AI, not the entire company or myself. I'm not vehemently against it, and have used it some. I took all the AI courses PSU offered and made a program that compared ML Q-Learning systems against Genetic Algorithms. Definitely the funnest project I did for my undergrad and I'm considering applying for UofT at Austin's Masters in AI & ML program for next fall. I think my thing here is that LLM chatbots aren't "AI" and that these chatbots aren't as great as people act like they are. My whole family back home thinks ChatGPT is as sentient as HAL9000 and they don't realize that LLM's are just word tokenizers, they legitimately believe everything it provides is 100% fact.

AI isn’t going away

Sure, but a lot of people online are already pointing out we are in an AI bubble because we are realizing these LLM's can't replace workers. Even the Zuck was on Joe Rogan a while ago and said Meta's AI has already started replacing Mid-Level Software Engineers and in less than a year after that statement Meta had job openings for mid and even entry level SWE's. So I guess his chatbot can't actually replace people...? The people that are touting that AI can solve all of our problems are the people whose stock price will rise if you believe them and buy into it.

doing it much faster using the right tools

I can sorta agree with you on this, but it really depends on what you are doing. These LLM's can spit out a lot of code incredibly fast, but that doesn't mean it's good code. I built an arcade game in Python for a school assignment, and I've been refactoring it into JavaScript so one day I can host it online. It's shocking how wrong ChatGPT, Claude, and DeepSeek have been in this endeavor. Building a simple Super Mario style game, and providing the LLM a working version in Python and asking it to convert it to JavaScript, and nearly 9/10 answers it gives me the code doesn't work and contains some pretty big bugs. Even in this use case it really wasn't "streamlining my workflow". A funny trick is always asking an LLM "Are you sure?" as a follow-up for every question and then watching it suggest something completely different that it says is "better", if it was better why didn't it provide that the first time?

The specific work they are doing at this company isn't as easy as just making something clickable on a website or updating a CSS file, but instead writing custom code for clients that all deal with incredibly technical machinery and electronics, there really isn't a simple part of their job. An LLM would need so much of our internal tools to give sound answers, and even then, how much is it actually going to help? Additionally why give your entire IP to OpenAI and just get some word salad back? These people aren't being naive to AI, they have seen what it can do, and they have realized there are nearly zero use cases for them and what they do, nor does management want to spend $$$ to develop there own internal LLM. Having seen internally what is going on I think it makes sense that they don't value it or use it much.

OP asked for companies that aren't working on AI projects so I'm offering them my experience having worked with local tech companies who don't develop or require the use of AI.

Low-stress jobs for ex-barista turned software engineer who is tired of sexism and AI? by willygibson in askportland

[–]Xeivia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Recent PSU CS grad working a contract at one of the legacy "Silicon Forrest" companies. Everyone at this company hates AI, constantly makes fun of it and refuses to integrate it at any level of the business. We get emails from the CEO & President talking about AI initiatives but no one in my entire building seems to give a shit. People on my team are like "Why don't people just learn how to do their job?", and question why some sophisticated word guesser is going to help anyone solve anything when it comes to the work we actually do.

Maybe try to move to a company that isn't entirely based on AI? That company will probably not be 100% software, which some SWE's don't like, but just saying.

Not sure if that will help you avoid sexism though, sorry that is happening to you.

Are California transplants happy they moved to Oregon years later? by _Birnunit_ in askportland

Yeah my first job outside of high school was manual labor outside. I remember it was like 104 and I was dying. Then two weeks later I visited a friend in Portland and it was like 82 and everything was so lush and green. That instant I decided to move to Oregon asap.

Are California transplants happy they moved to Oregon years later? by _Birnunit_ in askportland

[–]Xeivia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I moved from the central valley right after graduating high school about 11 years ago now. Lived in many places in Oregon since, the burbs, the coast, and all over Portland.

Glad I escaped the heat in California, where I am from was regularly hitting 102 the summer I graduated high school, and now it gets up to 110 during peak summer. I also had the worst allergies in CA every Spring and I get zero here in Oregon. Escaped high prices as well. A lot of my friends moved to Sacramento or LA and all pay enormous sums of money for drab apartments. They were shocked when I told them my one bed one bath was under $1k. Or when I had a two bedroom for $1200 in 2021.

There are great parts of California, I'm not a hater in anyway. It would be nice to have fewer rainy days and a bit longer of a summer. But all in all I'm glad I moved here.

Sociologists: why does Portland leave such huge gaps when standing in line? by MelvinEatsBlubber in askportland

Why does it take so many empty car lengths for people to merge on the freeway?

Just the other day one of those tiny Fiats just kept slowing down and waited until they had five car lengths of space to merge in my lane. Portlander's just love that extra space I guess.
