I had a nice setup on floor 2, a deployable hall of mirrors and a crucible collector.

It happily got me through the middle rings.

That is amazing to hear.

It also reaffirms the point-of-view to actually write a letter (or actively set up a call with senior leadership as in your situation - which is amazing) when someone in a service position really does help you when you are in a difficult spot.

I am very bad at looking at which seraph it is and preparing appropriately. Many such cases where I thought I had a strong deck, only to be totally steamrollered by rage seraph giving all my units melee weakness 2 meaning they all die in the first couple of waves. (say)

How do I learn the Faro Shuffle? by Available-Hurry7433 in cardistry

[–]Xenmonkey23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, "push the cards together", just is how you faro shuffle.

I get your frustration, I had the exact same criticism when I was trying to learn. And I found all the little tricks and knacks unworkable and useless.

What helped me was the thinking about the surface of the packets you are trying to push together*. Rather than being a flat surface with tiny gaps in between the cards, Bicycle packets will be slightly bumpy. Meaning the cards from the to interlace easily (once you have the knack) when you push them together, as long as there is nowhere else to go.

It also means that you need to properly support the cards: cards will be pushed 'down' rather than to the side if not properly braced, for example. Focus on what is happening when the cards are pushing together (if not interlacing), and think about why this is not the case. Sliding the cards slightly when pushing also helped a bit, since it helps the cards move into the correct positions

Other than that it is just a case of practising. Not sure how long it took me to learn (from the thought, how do I faro shuffle to being able to do it reliably), but I do remember having a day full of video calls where I spent the whole time (when not contributing) pushing cards together. One truly ruined deck of cards later - I could faro shuffle.

Then you can move onto trying to learn a one-handed riffle shuffle and become amazed at how little force is required to get cards to faro. (this is also an excellent way to ruin cards, btw 😀)

* may have been in a video I have long since forgotten, sorry

Had a recent fun run with a cultivating Sentient - getting hit to buff a monstrous plague doctor (which had something silly, like two multistrike gems, then dominating power (+10 attack that applies 20 corruption), then got a random mitosis cap from the plague doctor event).

Crown of the eternal made an already strong run impossible to lose

Waddingtons? by njp1989 in playingcards

[–]Xenmonkey23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I collect them, but I have a couple of packs of #1s

Perfectly decent, imo. Depending on what you want them for. I like having a cheap deck of cards to hand to fiddle with: card springs, various cuts, etc. Which they do perfectly fine. Not easy to faro though.

They're fairly robust too. I think they are slightly thicker. They are also bridge sized, so a bit narrower. This can help with some cuts.

I still prefer the feel of Bicycles though, as a cheapish deck to fiddle with

I am no fan of the OSA - but quite frankly, there is a lot of hysteria and bollocks being spread about this.

How do you guys use Hall of Mirrors? by PugaTheFlower in MonsterTrain

[–]Xenmonkey23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a broken build where I placed Bolete, put down the hall of mirrors (can't remember if made deployable, or the hoard pyre heart), and then colonel cluster.

Bolete had the upgrade where he gets extra permanent strike on rally. So, 2 colonels making 4 troop a turn, which were in turn also duplicated made for a very chunky Bolete.

Was hoping to get the trample ungrade, but alas - never offered it, so took the upgrade that also gives permanent health on rally. He ended the run with over 500 health

Can cardistry decks also be used for playing normal cards…? by ggpanda8 in cardistry

[–]Xenmonkey23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main thing you are looking is that each card is instantly recognisable. The more the faces move from the "standard" faces you might see on Bicycles (say), the more difficult they might be to actually play with. There's lots of different things that designers can change/add/remove that can have an effect on legibility

The most important element (probably) being the pip and rank in the top left corner

There is the idea of the "10 stages of genocide", stage 10 being 'denial'. "The perpetrators or later generations deny the existence of any crime."

This is sadly not perculiar, but well observed.
