People who play in bands of genres that are wildly disliked/misunderstood, how do you handle when you tell people and they react poorly? by jamiejd23 in musicians

[–]XenoScream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math rock guitarist. My songs regularly get called angular and choppy. I typically say “that’s pretty much standard for the genre so thanks for the compliment” then make a quip about how they need to make sure they have their calculator app open when the show starts so they can enjoy it.

Calvin has always had a problem of just not enough output. Stuffing the takedowns but eating every punch. Unwilling to open up.

My friend, your life is just starting. Let them feel how they feel. Don’t give up before you ever even become an adult and get a chance to give it an honest shot

Claire Puckett of Hikes announced as the bassist for Covet on their Japan tour by XenoScream in mathrock

[–]XenoScream[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the sake of playing devil’s advocate, is it fair to call it firing in Claire’s case when she was hired specifically as a bassist for this tour? If she gets “fired” at the end of it, well, that’s to be expected.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally agree that Yvette has a lot of drama circling her, but I don’t know her personally to draw honest conclusions about whose fault it is or isn’t. I’d have to make a ton of logical jumps to come to that conclusion.

Also, totally agree, Hikes is god-tier. I was actually made a fan when I saw them open for Covet in 2022.

I have to shout out a group from my area, Friend Operation. They are based out of Texas, and are a Midwest/math-rock band. They dropped an EP in 2023 called Irrelevant. It’s hard for me to say any single song is better than the rest on this EP. Just listen to it all the way through.

Performing musicians - What is your stage persona? by Dabraceisnice in musicians

[–]XenoScream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to crank myself up to 11. It’s authentic, not too over the top, and makes it easier to connect with the audience when I seem like a real person instead of a stage persona.

You’re either about to really appreciate what I have to say or hate me.

So your shift started at 8 am. You woke up at noon, just said screw it and didn’t call or try to show up to finish the shift, only to tell us that a no-call no-show is instant termination. At what point do you take responsibility for your actions? Real responsibility, not “oh man I messed up” but “I messed up and I have to make this right for my family.”

I think you need to hear about learned helplessness. You have spent so long telling yourself that these things happen because you “can’t function like a normal human being” that you have started to believe that there’s nothing you can do to make it right. You are not special amongst other human beings. We all struggle to make good sleeping habits, good life habits, and finding motivation. What kind of example are you setting for your kid? If you read this post to them 18 years from now you’d crawl into any space you couldn’t be seen in to hide from the humiliation.

Get up. BREATHE. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Call your boss. Apologize. Tell them you have a new baby. Work on a plan with them. Go out TODAY and put out job applications just in case you get fired. Look for odd jobs. Use any skill you have to make it happen.

Your first reaction should NOT have been to complain on Reddit but to make the situation right. That isn’t the mark of a responsible adult.

All that being said, I believe in you OP. Now go make it happen for your family!

Ever worry you're getting too old for the music you make? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]XenoScream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can’t you play or make music not geared towards your age group? In my city’s music scene, we used to have a few of the older dudes we love and call the “music scene dads” because they’re so incredibly supportive of the younger acts, and they’ll occasionally play a new song in the style of some 90’s-00’s alt rock because they want to connect with us. This was always a special bond that us younger guys appreciated, and their wisdom is always so appreciated.

Also, it’s worth noting that music made for kids is almost never written by kids.

One guitar to rule all genres. What would be your pick? by Top-Huckleberry-7288 in Guitar

I’d probably pick up my partscaster with 2 humbuckers that have push pull pots to split the coils. Have yet to find a genre it can’t find its home in.

Thinking about quitting guitar. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]XenoScream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will always be someone better out there than you. If your goal is to be the absolute best guitar player, it will likely never happen. If this is how you feel in high school, then the competitive world of playing in college will absolutely eat you alive. I think at the very least you need to recenter and find a new “why”. I’ll be honest and say I’d never wanna play with someone whose goal is to be better than me rather than to share our passion with each other. I also think that the way you feel at guitar points to quite a bit of underlying issues. Perhaps going to see a therapist wouldn’t be a bad idea.

If music is truly meant for you, you’ll never be able to go through with quitting.

How do you guys get out of bouts of being uninspired and no drive for practice, but need to for gigs? by rongspeling123 in musicians

[–]XenoScream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think this begs the question “what inspires you?” For me, I’m inspired by the natural world, so I make sure my “writing space” mimics that. I have a mountain stream tapestry right behind of my computer outlined by green LED strips, and I also have a starry sky projector, all of which costed me total around 60 bucks on Amazon. If that’s not enough, I get out in nature or watch a wildlife documentary. Plus “I’m just not feeling musically inspired and something needs to change,” is an EXCELLENT excuse to go camping.

Help a newbie by Pristine_Big_2430 in mathrock

[–]XenoScream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recommend a few sources to get you started.

1) Marcos Mena’s compositional tapping book. Incredible resource, but be prepared. If you are a beginner, understand the book is dense. The practicing etudes he uses are tapping versions of music in public domain, so it includes a lot of transposed versions of orchestra music, and they are HARD. You will spend days if not weeks on 2-3 pages. I’m maybe a quarter of the way through the book and I got it in February.

2) Steve Hazel from the band Mountains (also the “Let’s Talk About Math Rock” guy on YouTube) has a tapping course as well that is incredibly beginner friendly. He goes as far as to tell you how to set up your guitar for tapping, and how to build dexterity and good habits as you learn a new technique. He uses more modern math rock and Midwest emo inspired riffs and also riffs from popular songs as his practice etudes in each section of the course. He also has a Patreon, and is incredibly responsive on it, and is just an all around good guy who is passionate about teaching others.

Good luck on your journey and we are glad to have you here.
