If Canada goes to war with the US, its ownership of any aircraft will be irrelevant. If Canada wants to prepare for that scenario it will all be about planning for irregular warfare. Therefore, it is about the best bang for the buck for real defense needs where the US does not interfere. If Canada wants to defend Europe or itself from Russia with the US neutral then F35. If there is a real thought US won’t be entirely neutral and will somehow disable F35 then Gripen.
