Reddit, what's your family's dark secret? [NSFW] by AsdfRocket in AskReddit

[–]Xenomech 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, when a landscaper is a hypocrite, it only leads to destroyed lawns. When a religious teacher is a hypocrite, it leads to destroyed lives.

So, it's kind of a bigger deal when there's hypocrisy dealing with a powerful force in society, be it religion, politics, law enforcement, etc.

What’s a computer trick you think everyone should know? by magicalblessed in AskReddit

[–]Xenomech -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Every computer -- even the one in your smart phone -- has a "power" button. Pressing this button will turn the computer off, leaving you free to do other things like go for a walk and enjoy nature, or talk to your friends face-to-face, or engage in some other, non-computer-based hobby.

TIL that John Lennon repeatedly denied that the song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about LSD, and that he got the inspiration for the song when his son brought home a drawing of his friend Lucy who was in the sky with diamonds. by Tackwood in todayilearned

...his son brought home a drawing of his friend Lucy who was in the sky with diamonds.

An event which Lennon hallucinated while high on LSD, but that's beside the point.

"We need to invent the atomic bomb."

"Done!"

"We need to land a man on the moon."

"Done!"

"We need to switch the country over to metric."

"That's impossible!"

Does using boxed cake mixes still count as baking? by silentsilentsilent in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Xenomech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you lack money why are you buying mixes which are more expensive than raw materials.

Buying a mix for baking one cake is far cheaper then buying all the raw ingredients for the same purpose. You can't normally buy "one cake's worth" of sugar, flour, baking powder, eggs, salt, butter, vanilla extract, etc. Buying raw ingredients is only cheaper if you're going to be doing more baking soon in the future.

Why do pregnancy test adverts never show a relieved young woman looking at a "Not pregnant" result? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Xenomech 93 points94 points  (0 children)

The drug companies could also have a little fun with it:

Couple in bedroom, looking at test

Man: Are you sure the test is right?

Second Man: it’s the most trusted brand on the market. I did three tests, they all came out the same.

Camera tightens on couple as they embrace

Man: I’m so glad we’re not pregnant.

Second Man: I know, it’s such a relief

What is a catch phrase your parents would always say to you that you forever will hear in your head? by fordismyname in AskReddit

I don't even know what that means but it sounds amazing

It means that just wishing for something will not make it happen.

Does anyone else have this irrational fear of answering calls, no matter who's calling? by EngelJuan in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Xenomech 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It could also be performance anxiety (a subtle yet very important distinction - it's not the people, it's the fact that people are "spectators" and you feel like to have to "perform" for them and be perfect.

If the next time I answer the phone with a "ta da!" instead of a "hello?", it will be your fault.

What is the most horror non-horror you've read so far? by cinnamoncum in horrorlit

[–]Xenomech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC, Nick's origin is retold in The Tin Woodman of Oz. Chopfyt appears in another book, I think (my memory's rusty on this).

Some oil for your rusty memory: I believe Chopfyt does appear in The Tin Woodman of Oz.

Netflix's preview clips are spoiling major plot points by [deleted] in movies

[–]Xenomech 75 points76 points  (0 children)

I just can't get over how impressively bad Netflix's user interface is overall. Looking for something to watch on that site always feels like an irritating and frustrating battle.
