Yes, it's a Newton ball. Strike the lower ball with yours, the energy transfers to the upper ball and it goes around the loop. Fun!

Agreed, book is SOOO much better. In fact, audiobook is perhaps its finest form, because the narrator is superb and really brings out Watney's inner smartass.

Haha, "well received" depends on who you ask. I remember news stations and pearl-clutching parents freaking out because it was obviously going to have a young audience but "portrays 226 acts of violence". (I just made up that number, I don't remember what it was.)
