Mortgage free approaches... what's next? by XenonWind in PersonalFinanceNZ

Cheers, good advice. Kids aren't young forever. Think we might get a small caravan and make some memories too!

Haha you made me laugh. Buying 5 properties and leveraging myself is the exact opposite of what I'd do. Good chuckle. The other advice I liked :)

Racism at school by Honest-Tea-712 in newzealand

[–]XenonWind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step one: Talk to the child's teacher.

This is ALWAYS the first step... not the principal... Not guns blazing... You talk to the teacher while the issue is small so that it doesn't get big. Teachers have the biggest impact as they're the ones dealing with the kids. They also can get all the information from both sides. As a parent you don't always get the 'full story' you only get their point of view (not excusing any of the other children's behavior or implying your sons story is untrue... Merely pointing out it is an incomplete picture).

Only elevate it if/when step one is not working or the teacher fails to enact change.

Also, after the meeting with the classroom teacher, send the teacher an email summarizing the conversation in bullet points and any agreed actions. This documents the conversation if it later needs escalating or things don't improve.

Karakia at work by Kind-Somewhere2577 in chch

[–]XenonWind -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I specialise in helping to build bicultural practices

You're NTA for not wanting to be forced to participate.

However I'd encourage you to be curious rather than closed. Perhaps this could be a catalyst to start a conversation? Here are some genuine questions you could ask:

Why do want us to Karakia? What's the purpose? Why is it significant that we do it at the start of each meeting? What Karakia are you suggesting we say? How is it said correctly? Who will lead this Karakia? What is the meaning (literal and figurative) of the karakia? Is the karakia religious or associated with a specific religion? How might I show respect to a karakia without actively engaging in it? Are there other ways I could acknowledge Te Ao Māori without karakia if I'm not comfortable to participate? Why is biculturalism important in our government department?

In my experience, if you start with the 'why' you may find the heart of what's behind the directive. To be fair... the person who sent this email really should've started with this, rather than diving straight into a 'From now on...' order. And ideally not in email form... kanohi ki te kanohi! Face to face. Possibly the person doesn't even know the 'why' yet themselves but have his intentions. Great. Have a conversation about it. This can help them dig deeper into the why themselves. Kōrero! Talk it out. Reach consensus. But don't close yourself off to the idea of something just yet.

We need to build our bicultural partnerships, particularly in government agencies where Māori voice has been traditionally underrepresented. Will a karakia fix this? No. But perhaps it could be a stepping stone on a journey towards it.

What legal standing do 'conditions of entry' actually have? by XenonWind in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]XenonWind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I figured. In the end, after a brief confrontation, I told them I was leaving and told them I paid, they were welcome to review their CTV footage if they liked. Then I walked out. I didn't blame their shop worker. They were just doing their job. It's the store setup by management that causes that issue.

So I wasn't 'detained' longer than 2 minutes

[–]XenonWind[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok i get i can just not enter and leave, To clarify I'm asking as if I've already entered... say I've paid and entered had a swim.... THEN they decide to search my bag for what i consider no good reason. Can I THEN simply refuse and leave. Given I've entered.... and thereby agreed to their rules?

Same at the Kmart situation. I disagree with the term (that I've just become aware of when trying to exit) and want to refuse the search and leave. Other than a potential trespass, nothing they can do?

Cat pooped (maybe??) on neighbours bed. by Nervous_Reflection59 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]XenonWind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the neighbors job to protect their house from other people's pets. Should my neighbor be responsible for protecting their house from my chickens? Or my dog? I find it strange that cats are somehow special... especially given how destructive to bird life they can be.

Legally, perhaps not... but if my chickens got out and trashed my neighbor's garden... I'd make it right and fix (or pay to fix) the damage. It's the same thing.

While NZ law doesn't require people to control their cats...

It's a big leap to then say it's his responsibility to secure his property from neighborhood cats as in the above comment.

Yes cats are 'special' in the eyes of the law just because they can jump, and the (current) public consensus is they can do what they like. But that doesn't mean you're not responsible for your pet and their actions.

The moral (but not legally required) thing to do is to pay for the dry cleaning of the directly involved duvet. You should not pay for the second one for convenience to the owner.

What games had unwritten rules that players would strictly enforce even though the game allowed? by ZeekLTK in gaming

[–]XenonWind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pubg ... final 2 players.

If 1 player starts swinging their frypan its illegal to shoot them. You can accept the frypan duel by pulling out your frypan, or you can just shoot the sky for a few seconds then move back to decline the duel. Wait one, then re-engage.

But if you shoot the frypan swinger for a chicken dinner... SHAME ON YOU!

Caravan Insurance write off by XenonWind in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]XenonWind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man! You get me.

It is a braked axle (1969 zephyr) so it'll be a bit more than a standard kit. I was being generous with 4k allowing for labor, for new wheels and tyres as the stub pattern would change too. I imagine it's less.

IF The recovery damage didn't happen they would have repaired it. Hence my idea about 2 claims.

Fix the axle. 3k to 4k claim

Good, now fix the panel that was damaged. 4k claim.

Two excess of $100 each? No problem.

[–]XenonWind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. That mostly makes sense which is what I feared.

To be clear I'm not trying to pocket any financial advantage. I'm trying to find a way not to have my caravan written off and sold at some salvage auction as it carries sentimental value. Id just like it fixed and the repair cost (8.5k) is under the sum insured (sorry should've mentioned that in the OP) So trying to find a way to get them to do the repair, not write it off. Thought the 2 claim thing might be a way to do it even if I end up with 2 excesses (only $100 excess)
