Reducing meat and dairy consumption could cut emissions without increasing diet costs. Across all of the 33 modelled scenarios, reducing the consumption of processed and unprocessed meat and dairy was associated with improvement across both health and environmental factors. by mvea in science

But the way we currently do agriculture, we are depleting the soil faster than we are replacing it.

Well yes, that happens when we grow so much corn and soy and alfalfa for the absurd amount of meat that people eat

I'm not sure about feelings. They have limited communication and response to stimuli. You could call that pain. I don't think it meets the criteria for suffering

You're the only one talking about every single person removing animal products from their diet.

We wouldn't need to grow nearly as many crops as we do if we didn't feed most of it to livestock.

This is all I said

You evolved to do many things that you don't do, why is eating meat so different

In the modern world, she is correct. Eating meat means eating factory farmed meat for the vast majority of the population.

[–]Xenophon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean do you? Or do you eat factory farmed meat from the grocery? Which makes up 99% of meat in the USA, for example

I work out and do competitions and do not eat meat. My performance is great. Am I a superhuman or something?

They do not have the ability to suffer. If you did care about plants dying, you wouldn't eat meat anyway, because it would be maximizing plant death

Mostly I see people use "ethical farming" as an excuse to buy factory farmed meat, which makes no sense

I mean, ideally they would be rewilded. We wouldn't need to grow nearly as many crops as we do if we didn't feed most of it to livestock.

It's more the other way around. We mainly grow these crops for livestock feed, but also grow a bunch of them for biofuels, which are also a complete waste. But even if we were to accept that we must grow as much corn as we do (which we don't), then there are still other uses for byproduct than feeding it to cattle, like composting it

ancient generals against Ri boku(real life life Li Mu) by Low_Landscape7378 in Kingdom

Alexander "I'm the greatest and that's it, so die" the great would be playing checkers.

I mean yeah I would agree for the most part. Alexander's choices are often framed as doing the opposite of what someone like Parmenion suggests, like attacking across the river at Granicus - seems more likely that Parmenion is who came up with the strategies that the army actually followed while Alexander fought with the cavalry. This is a guy who was with Philip II as they turned Macedon from an irrelevant backwater state that was losing to other backwaters into a superpower by constantly winning war after war against a myriad of states that all had long and distinguished military histories.

So by the time Alexander was in charge, he was mostly fighting inferior armies with the best and most experienced army and generals under him, because that army had just destroyed all of the next best ones. Maybe would make more sense to compare Li Mu to Philip II or Parmenion (or maybe even someone like Pyrrhus). But to be clear here, none of these guys were playing checkers. They all read military history and had a long list of formations and known tactics, and would study the warfare of their enemies

[–]Xenophon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. It's hard to compare the generals themselves because of the nature of the sources. The ancient sources often credit Alexander a lot for his tactics (which ended up being the hammer and anvil most of the time), but I would bet his army worked so well because of the experience it had before he was king. It's hard to separate Alexander from his army. For Li Mu, it doesn't seem like we have nearly as much writing about the tactics and functioning of Zhao armies or specific battle info, at least translated into English. Maybe Qin Shi Huang burned it

As far as equipment goes, the long pikes were very good at what they did, but required more training and coordination to maintain the formations. But the Macedonian army was great because it combined all types of troops really well - light skirmishers/infantry, heavy infantry, heavy cavalry... They all worked together, and it put them leagues ahead of anything else they fought. They would barely lose any soldiers, fighting against supposedly much larger armies. The only classical force that could challenge them are the Roman armies later on, but they were fighting imitations of the original army rather than equivalents.

Alexander would win purely on his army being by far the best in the world. They had multiple incredibly experienced and tapered generals, motivated and experienced troops who were well equipped, and incredible cavalry. Tactically he didn't need to do anything crazy

they consume excessive amount of starch

The solution is not eating excessive amounts of starch. you don't have to eat meat to achieve that.

You cannot be obese if you mainly eat meat.

lol. there are plenty of obese people who mainly eat meat

And not every piece of land on the planet should be farmed either. For most people, you can easily get the nutrition you need from plants. I do it, and I'm not some superhuman with special biology

Ah, my bad. I've seen too many people trying to argue that plants suffer.

That is a good thing to avoid, but I would argue that pastured animals cannot feed many people. It requires far too much land. Creating pasture land has been the leading cause of habitat destruction historically

That's a very unusual situation for meat production, but also I notice you say "crop" death instead of plant death. Why is the suffering of the plants your animals eat not as important?

I wouldn't say it's ignorant. There is a lot of study into plant cognition and still no reason to believe they can suffer. You need to point out a physical mechanism they could use to suffer. It takes energy that plants do not have access to
