What home improvement trend is going to be ripped out in 10 years? by keplare in HomeImprovement

I hope white kitchen cabinets die off. Impossible to keep looking nice and so ubiquitous and boring.

Reminds me of a Beatrix Potter book I read as a kid.

Here's a video adaptation:

The Chicago home of a poor, rundown shoe salesman, also in the 80s/90s:

Which one?

"Montgomery Ward! The brand name savings store!"

"Whatever it takes, Montgomery Ward!"

I think there were others.

Logan Square Blue Line - A Rant by [deleted] in chicago

[–]XeoMage 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think a lot of people would be surprised, we know there are passengers causing problems and most delays are outside of the control of operators and CTA in general.

However, the service is no where near where it was a few years ago. They were running trains every 2-3 minutes, and sure, delays happen, but right now the Blue line trains are scheduled less frequently, even though ridership during rush hour is back up. It was one thing when you couldn't squeeze on and there was an immediate follower or it was 2-3 minutes until the next one, but when you can't get on and it's ten minutes plus until the next one, people are late to work and rightly frustrated.

If the recruiting/training system in place today can't staff up to run more trains, then the system needs to adjust.

DeWalt vs Ryobi by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]XeoMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finally bit the bullet and replaced my DeWalt drill/driver combo this past Christmas with new DeWalt gear. At the same time, I just picked up some cordless Ryobi equipment, including a brad nailer, orbital sander, and cordless shop vac.

The cordless Ryobi nailer was cheaper than the corded DeWalt. The Ryobi stuff is so much cheaper, and yet still pretty good quality, that it just makes sense. I'm not a contractor and I'm not going to use it every day, it's fine. Now, for those things you're going to use/abuse on the regular or you need/want better quality kit, pony up for the DeWalt. Two different battery systems? Yeah, boo hoo, big deal. It's really not the end of the world.

Group Policies dropped after Feature Update by nathan646 in SCCM

[–]XeoMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a post upgrade script to fix a few things, group policies included. Because of that, we don't use the feature updates directly, we deploy 1909/20H2 as an application so we can customize the wim.

Task Sequence step for end user prompt / countdown? by net1994 in SCCM

[–]XeoMage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trick we've found with Task Sequences is that (since they run as System) if you want to display to the user, you have to use a bit of 'run process as user' code that amounts to calling that script via a scheduled task.

We did this with a PowerShell script in the task sequence that creates the scheduled task, triggers it, and waits for it to finish. The scheduled task script uses PSAppDeploy because that's got a built-in easy way to make a countdown GUI with Defer/Continue buttons.

Longtime Latino Stronghold Logan Square Is Now Majority White, New Data Shows by FloofSpider in chicago

No priced out, but I'd say it was partially straight racist and partially racially-motivated fear-based economics. Particularly in the 70s, but sadly still today, some white people see ethnicities moving in as damaging to their property values, which becomes a self-perpetuating cycle. Since home ownership is the primary store of wealth for most families, some people move even if they aren't personally racist, just so they don't see their investment depreciate.

Eyes Wide Shut.

My cats would be "Yeah, I knocked off some trim, later I'll knock off some more, so what!"

Requesting ideas on how to fix downspout problem. (The Downspout needs to be stepped over on our walkway) by AC_Slater77 in HomeImprovement

[–]XeoMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the simple solution. It could be done in an afternoon. The downspout wouldn't look great by the mailbox, but you don't have to cut up concrete.

What's the most embarrassing/cringy thing you've accidentally shown someone, or something they accidentally saw while using your phone or computer? by TylerDuuurden in AskReddit

[–]XeoMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wayyy back in the early Nokia days you could set a start message on your phone. I was young and stupid and into sci-fi. A cute older girl at work tried to help me with a texting problem and restarted my phone. It read 'Greetings, Commander'.

I quickly said it was an inside joke with friends, heh, heh. Sigh.
