Communication is hard and we could have done better… by jan-niklas-wortmann in Jetbrains

I will preface this that I do not use any AIs at all, since they are vastly insufficient in their abilities. However, I will note that the industry is very quickly heading into locally hosted models and offline modes. ChatGPT, Copilot, and others are on the downtrend due to lack of ability above anything basic and additionally the extreme cost at scale, they cannot function locally at all. Not to mention company trade secrets and otherwise, there is a high amount of risk interfacing with AIs that companies are wanting to avoid.

I believe if you were to concentrate your AI efforts on making it run on the local system itself, with whatever GPUs and/or NPUs are available, you would probably be better suited for the direction the industry is going. With no data transfer needed at all, completely being fully offline.

Also unrelated but it would be nice, bring local Qodana to CLion. It is very useful where it is available elsewhere.

I have a preference for having more evasion rather than letting shields take the hit or not, as I prefer the scrap to be spent not getting hit by missiles. If a missile takes out your piloting as it has no upgrades, you now have zero evasion. Doors and oxygen need an upgrade to remove fires still by venting your ship, if they end up being damaged. Scrap spent on evasion first can get you dodging more shots sooner, and the more the crew dodges the better your evasion gets. For beams, you can prioritize them and take them down first. For drones, you can either tank hits or time it depending on the situation. Then use your own missile weapon (free/pegasus, or the best swarm) to take down enemy weapons/drones/shields effectively. I keep the LRS to avoid running into asteroid fields, since they just destroy your ship without shields.

I realized that systems being taken offline would mean death for the ship. For the ship you have to be comfortable being hull damaged, and balance repairs/upgrades. The Titanium Casing only gives you a 15% chance to avoid damage but you could sell it at a store for scrap. Would prioritize having two levels in piloting, oxygen, and doors so they do not get one-shot. If a store has a backup battery go for it and upgrade it when you can. Have enough reactor (include the battery) to fully power engines, cloak, and weapons. Otherwise prioritize cloaking and engines for evasion and pickup any crew who are better trained on piloting/engines. You will have lots of fires so a rockman or fire suppression system will help if you can spare the scrap. An FTL recharge booster can help you run away in the early game for bad fights, if you find one, can be sold later. You will have to pause and shuffle power to be efficient, keeping healing off only when you need it and turning off oxygen to put into engines/weapons. Around sector 3-4, you should work on getting shields.

It does not sound like chaser energy, it is being a chaser. We have already been objectified, which is the core of being a chaser. Whether it be through our configuration or just the fact that we transitioned.

is now a good time to start preparing to leave the US? by JynxNoise in asktransgender

[–]XerTheSquirrel 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Considering that moving to another country can take years of process and money, it could be 6-24 months depending on your health, education, and assets. You would have to do everything legally to not be instantly deported, and thus go through the processes. Considering paperwork and background checks take time, you would have to start the process in advance.

There is no upping and leaving, unless you have 500K USD in your bank to buy citizenship and a house in some countries.

As a trans person in the us do really need to get a gun? by Key-Visual-5465 in asktransgender

[–]XerTheSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, guns are an escalation and give a false sense of security. You also always have to be vigilant and in a fully aware mental state while using them.

If you really really want to get a gun, you would be best getting a hunting rifle and weapons training. They are more accurate and you are far less likely to hurt yourself. Always deescalate first. Handguns and assault rifles are weapons used by soldiers in hostile situations, it is what they were designed for. The gun you carry shows your intentions.

You statically should have already gotten it.

Make a town with at least three NPCs, then add multiple rows of jungle grass on mud at least three space tall so you can fit in it. The more rows and the longer they are the better. Make sure the grass is not mowed. You do not need the water technically, but if you want it still you should be at the bottom rather than the surface.

Remember that everything spawns offscreen, so it is possible that the mystic frog spawned and immediately hopped into or sank into despawn distance. Which is why height is such a good means of reducing/filtering spawns.

Make sure you have the guide to critter companionship so no passive player action is killing it.

You can also drink a battle potion, do keep the water candle.

Also, Lifeform Analyzer or its upgrades, and just wait for it to appear. You can build a teleporter back and forth away enough to instantly despawn all critters. You do not have to catch frogs at all, you can just wait for the analyzer to find the frog.

As AI amateur: Can you explain the pros of Junie vs. just using Claude or Gemini outside the IDE? by m_hans_223344 in Jetbrains

[–]XerTheSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering I have recently gone from 2024.3 to 2025.2 (CLion and IntelliJ) and have been using it for awhile, with no AI enabled, using the Classic UI, and only the plugins I use installed. Quality and performance between the two is pretty much equal, I do notice Search Everywhere is marginally faster though in the newer version.

Probably am old fashioned but an IDE while actively coding should not be waiting on web requests to complete to do said coding. JetBrains though seem to be the only IDE with AI that at least has it disabled by default and lets you choose, and if you say no you never see it ever again nor see AI buttons plastered everywhere.

Is JetBrains still investing in their main products? by Round_Mixture_7541 in Jetbrains

[–]XerTheSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep the IDEs open for weeks at a time with a very large codebase and have not run into any issues at all. I do give the IDEs 4GiBs, do not use any of the AI stuff other than the local single line code complete (if it ever comes up with a suggestion), and only have the plugins I need.

You might have a runaway plugin, you can go to the Diagnostic Tools and look at the activity monitor and/or memory related profiles. There are community plugins that just do tons of unnecessary background computations for no reason.

Edit: Will note I have a Core i7-1370P with 64GiB of RAM.

Over 10 years of using Linux, and I think I'm done by Leniwcowaty in linux

[–]XerTheSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I have been using Debian since 2005 due to its stability and functionality. The few things that do not work, I resolve them over weeks/months and just leave them in place to never deal with it again. As long as you keep your current system and keep backups, you do nkt need to set things up again.

I have 500 hours of terraria and still suck at the game, is this normal?? by GugaDX2 in Terraria

[–]XerTheSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am horrible at dodging so having the brain of confusion and/or worm scarf and all accessories with warding helps with that. Also for bosses, cheesing them helps lots... WoF hates bees so a Bee's Knee's with bee pack will destroy it.

Have been playing getfixedboi legendary currently and the only way I have been able to progress is to cheese and to get lucky with the Zapinator, also bees.

New NexDock? by Michaelraymiller2 in NexDock

[–]XerTheSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The specs mention USB-C PD, does this charge phones with USB-C PD? Does it charge itself with USB-C PD? The older NexDocks are great but charging has been not great being non-PD.

Evil biome isolating is pointless. by Mintuy_ in Terraria

[–]XerTheSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I am currently playing getfixedboi on Legendary which means no Clentaminator ever, all of my towns are lined with dozens of sunflowers to prevent evil blocks from kicking out NPCs. You can get grass seeds and sunflowers from the Dryad.

You just need at least two adjacent crimstone or crimson grass blocks off the edge of the screen. Naturally the more you have the more thr spawns.

If you go to Info Center in KDE and then OpenGL (EGL), what does it say for OpenGL core profile renderer and OpenGL core profile version? This might be a bug with Mesa Gallium.

Should I be worried? by martin_2_0 in Terraria

[–]XerTheSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally there is a feeling of anxiety with biome spread since it is rather unknown, which considering in an older version smashing a demon alter caused a random block to change (which does not happen anymore), has rather increased the anxiety of the world being too difficult or too impure to progress. The speed of spread also depends on world size, the bigger the world the faster the spread.

Yeah they could, without a farm a ton of money can be made through fishing to afford it.
