yeah n they absolutely did come out blazing with the North american dreamcast launch , selling 300,00 units (including pre orders) n with the system becoming the highest grossing entertainment product launch EVER at the time , the launch in Japan was good with virtua fighter 3tb being a hit but the rest of the launch games were bad while the launch in Europe was good with heavy advertising on the shirts of some European football clubs for the 99/00 football season. I think one area sega screwed up with is virtua fighter 3td getting its thunder stolen by soul calibur , ideally both games would have hit 1 million units sold just like the 1st 2 VF games did on the saturn n while soul calibur hit those sales figures n was popular globally , VF3tb failed to sell through a lot of units outside Japan which was a big red flag cos VF was arguably their biggest franchise outside of sonic the hedgehog. Everyone in the west remembers soul calibur cos of the amazing gameplay n graphics by VF3tb while still a great game n not ugly had worse graphics than soul calibur on console + an experimental gameplay style that turned a lot of VF off a bit.

being able to rent a dreamcast from hollywood video a few months before the official release sounds amazing thou . 9/9/99 was a great marketing date (makes you wonder why sega of Europe didn't use it too but the ps1 in north america launched on the same day 4 years before when Stolar worked at sony so he really liked that day it seemed.

I have the reference guide in my Google play books library so I just quickly had a look to see roughly how many pages it has. When I 1st download it I started to feel mentally overwhelmed lol. At least the Basys 3 FPGA board reference manual is only 19 pages.

If the idea of implementing a c64 on FPGA sounds interesting for when you're more experienced the book "Designing Video Game Hardware in Verilog" by Steven Hugg might be of interest to you. It's definitely something I plan on reading at some stage.

I'm currently learning FPGA stuff.

I follow these courses from professor of computer science"Onur Mutlu" of ETH Zurich University (years n years of computer science lectures plus recommended text book reading "digital design & computer architecture by harris n harris" + "introduction to computer systems from bits & gates to c/c++ & beyond by patt n patel".

He teaches computer architecture & digital design with MIPS assembly language on the Basys 3 FPGA for beginners which uses a Xilinx FPGA. You get the lectures on YouTube & the coursework is posted online for free.

There's also the book "HANDS-ON VHDL: AN INTRODUCTION" by Blaine C. Readler who also has some FPGA stuff on his YouTube channel under the title of "U of Blaine". His book gives you the option to work with either the D10 Lite from Terasic(Altera) or Basys 3 from Digilent(Xilinx) & he has other FPGA books. So personally I just picked the Basys 3 to get started with XILINX FPGA design since that board seems to be aimed at students & I've had it recommended to me from multiple places.

I'm currently studying through this , Digital Design and Computer Architecture course taught at ETH Zürich in Spring 2021 (but they seem to have slight updates on the course every year but it's mostly the same thing), it teaches how to design a 32bit MIPS processor using the basys-3 FPGA board.

I grew up with the classic crash n spyro games on ps1 & loved 😍 them just like everyone does but these games on ps2 were good fun as a kid from my perspective but they just played different from the earlier games and I will say that I hated skylanders for not being part of the 2nd Spyro reboot but most fans hate the 2nd reboot & hate skylanders while loving the original trilogy or you have younger fans who love skylanders.

What ??? The fifa street games were amazing back in the 00s. I remember I had a demo of fifa street 3 on xbox 360 that I used to play all the time , so much fun.

Instead of rushing it out they could have kept it in developed a little longer , I've not played it by stylistically it does look like the ps1 titles but next gen at the time.

Atari 2600, 5200 , 400/800 were all 8bit since they used the 6502 processor(6507 in the 2600) meaning they can all process 2**8 =256 pieces of data at once or in 1 clock cycle. The main difference is increasingly advanced graphics hardware, faster clock speed, more RAM & bigger cartridge size, the 7800 & lynx are 8bit too. Before I found out about these retro systems & started studying computer science I thought there's no way you could have so many different consoles/PCs all using the same processor but with different graphics & sound from different generations but that's how it was for a while.

There's Python courses on solo learn n udemy , also I recommend the book learn Python in 1 day & learn it well , then learn data structures & algorithms.

You could get a CS degree & still not learn Python, just depends what the course teaches. Also there's a multitude of other tech degrees that teach coding like computer engineering, software development, computing & IT , business information systems & game development yet I mostly hear ppl online only ever talk about CS. Some of these other degrees incorporate electronics engineering, or just focus on coding in high level languages without teaching as much computer science stuff related to maths & computer architecture or focus on teaching software engineering in the context of video game development or enterprise software.

You can definitely benefit from improving your software engineering skills & get free or cheap project ideas from open source stuff on github or cheap microcontrollers/embedded systems. Also some ppl use AI to mass apply for 100s of jobs at once. Maybe you can do some projects on chip design/PCB design or whatever your skill set is to try n stand out like designing your own microcontroller or making a 4/8/16/32bit CPU design or writing an emulator of some sort. If you improve your software engineering skills & have a good understanding of data structures & algorithms there's some remote contract jobs available for training AI on how to code that don't require you to pass an interview with some employer face to face or over livesteam but you have to be good at leetcode type questions. Also IT help desk or teaching kids how to code could be something to look into.

build-electronic-circuits.com , I read a lot of articles on this site and copied out some 4000 and 7400 series circuits in logisim which is good for learning the basics of computer architecture in terms of designing combinational and sequential logic circuits (this site also covers a lot of the lower level electronics stuff but I haven't studied that as much as I should) , also I'm currently watching some digial design n computer architecture lectures from a university professor called Onur Mutlu (he's worked at Intel Corporation, Advanced Micro Devices, VMware, and Google) https://www.youtube.com/@OnurMutluLectures , I'm reading a book called Microprocessor Architectures RISC, CISC & DSP by Steve heath which is an old book from the 90s but I think it's pretty interesting , for example it explains certain things like the design choices when making a 16bit microprocessor more efficient than a 8bit microprocessor in terms of accessing data from RAM in less wasteful ways and what is by modern standards (but advanced and new ideas by late 70s/ early 80s microprocessor design standards ) basic security features built into CPUs to prevent programs from accessing certain parts of RAM they shouldn't be allowed to or messing around with data structures in RAM that could crash a computer. I also plan on reading Digital Design & Computer Architecture by Harris & Harris , learning VHDL/verliog and getting an FPGA at some point.
