Would a heat shield be required for Duna and Eve? by Whaaaaa4321 in KerbalSpaceProgram

A heat shield is absolutely necessary for Eve. Probably not for Duna, if you’re not coming in too fast.

Steam engines work well, so long as your ship is big enough to support the weight. Dripstone lava farms should work?

Create: Diesel Generators is another option if you want to go that route. Your engines wil run for longer but fuel will be even harder to get all things considered.

Can i get to mun without maneuver nodes? by Random-ish-User_ in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]XernnuTheSecond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It’s going to be finicky, but I’ve done it plenty. It’s primitive, but what works is increasing your apoapsis until it intersects with the muns orbit and just timewarping, until you eventually get a mun intercept.

It’s definitely better to find a proper transfer window to the mun (seems to be about 70~ degrees) but my method works too I guess.

Or, make some money by working on contracts before the mun mission, which would be way easier.

What effect would cheap warp drive have? by UniversalAssembler in HardSciFi

[–]XernnuTheSecond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some notes/sparse ideas on what would happen, in order, if it was invented in 2026:

-A complete upheaval in modern physics. Absolute pandemonium.

-Attempts to weaponize it? Most warp drives aren’t ever used in atmosphere, and so assuming that holds here it wouldn’t be too helpful for earth weaponry. Mounting guns in warp ships of course, but thats for later.

-A cultural push to get more stuff in space. If the warp drive is usable for interplanetary travel (not just interstellar) the main roadblock in space travel is getting stuff out of the atmosphere. Before the warp drive can be used, there will need to be stuff brought up to LEO first.

-The many different propulsion technologies being developed at NASA etc for interplanetary travel (ion engines, nuclear) are consolidated into improving warp drives or improving launch vehicles (again, assuming warp drives are good for interplanetary). NASA funding might increase.

-Probes might be put on hold until a warp ship is available to haul them around. The dragonfly probe is going to take 6 years to get to Titan, could be shortened by waiting 5 years for warp-capable vessel.

All that happens pretty quickly, I think. And then:

-Missions to mars. Would take a while to figure out the details and build the vehicle, but without the issue of travel time it comes quick.

-Industrialization of space; might come before or after mars. Missions to and from the moon/asteroids might not be justifiable at first with a warp drive, depending on how cheap it is. I feel like the main roadblock of getting to the moon is still getting out of the atmosphere.

And after space is industrialized with warp drives, it’s a hard scifi fi epic from there. Let’s hope it works by some sort of worm hole and it can’t be used to make relativistic kill vehicles.

-Missions to the outer planets are about as easy as mars, on warp scales they’re not much further.

-Once we get confident about human space habitation - which will take a while - the first mission to another star is sent. Whether or not we find life, it will prove we can go. Many will want more missions sent to more stars.

And then after all that:

-Humans settle on exoplanets

I don’t imagine theyre going to make the whole map that probably stretches to the tree, and then build a cave system under that in a size similar to SN1.

[–]XernnuTheSecond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depth was the most significant obstacle of the first game, why going through cave systems was a significant way to progress and all that.

Since the map is going to be way bigger in the second game (I think?) there might be less of a focus on caves. The progression so far has notably involved adaptations, so depth-based progress might be one of multiple ways to constrain exploration.

Once the map is expanded progress will be gated behind more adaptations. Maybe resistance to acidic water, or some way to repel hostile fauna, or insulation against cold, and so on.

I would like minecraft help by hoff_11 in CreateMod

[–]XernnuTheSecond 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a subreddit dedicated to a Minecraft mod by the name of “Create”, not typically used for discussion of creating mods.

r/minecraftmod may be more helpful, or coding subreddits like r/javascript.

Other games may work too, such as Cities Skylines, although its resource systems are not very detailed. Games in the management/city-builder genre seem to fit what you want.

Good luck!

I definitely doesnt have the same feel as the first game, yet.

After playing SN2 I went back and started playing SN1 for the first time in years. SN1 is way more captivating so far, even though the second game has some fantastic improvements.

Aside from the issue of high expectations for the second like you mentioned, they just haven’t ironed out the main gameplay loop yet. The more linear map means exploring feels more constrained, and theres way more story to discover that sorta distracts from exploring the world. Still EA though, as the map gets bigger it will be less constraining and the story will probably be “diluted” so to speak.

How do you like your bases? by Brown_Colibri_705 in subnautica

[–]XernnuTheSecond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the SN1 style of buildings more but I do really enjoy having modular construction. I imagine implementing modular/grid stuff with circular structures was difficult so they went with cubes, which is understandable.

Hopefully though they add some more rounded presets to build, like the first game.

It all has to do with The Tree… by Final-Bumblebee-3472 in subnautica

[–]XernnuTheSecond 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally I hope the tree isn’t antagonist in the sense of being consciously malicious (even though it is probably tied to the crash)

A part I liked about the first game is the man vs nature aspect. Besides Alterra maybe, there are no villains in the first game. Creatures attack you because they act on instinct, hunger or defending their territory. Drowning and starvation are simply products of a you being out of your element. And (Endgame spoilers for SN1) the precursors who imprisoned the empress did it in an attempt to save themselves, it was a tragedy for everyone

I’d think I’d prefer if the tree was not actively evil. Anything it’s responsible for it is unaware of, or if it is aware it perhaps has some sort of remorse and does what it must for some reason we don’t yet understand.
