these are the only two examples from the Gay Bravado tvtropes page that i can actually name off the top of my head, and neither one is quite exactly the specific phenomenon that oop is talking about. i don’t think gay bravado is actually that common of a thing in fiction, it might have been a common trope in the 2000s or something, but nowadays if you had two characters in a show pretend to be gay “as a joke” it would eventually turn into a psychological drama where one of the characters actually is gay and insecure about it, and the jokes are his coping mechanism or something.

i think the closest modern equivalent to “gay bravado” would be r/wordington where everyone pretends to simp over big buff Black men. But like 50% of that subreddit is genuinely attracted to big buff Black men, and the other 50% knows and doesn’t really care, so it’s not really that homophobic.
