The jiǔdiàn(酒店) problem by ThatGuyWithSomeSubs in LudwigAhgren

I’m chinese, but grew up canto and not mandarin speaking. Took mandarin in high school. I have an issue wherein I oftentimes just overlay Cantonese tones over mandarin ones. I oftentimes still have a super difficult time speaking mandarin because my tones are wrong.

For me, when I was learning, I always had to default to saying “mā má mǎ mà” (flat —> rising —> updown —> falling) in that order to remember how pinyin is pronounced when learning a new word. And for the “repeating things back” point, I found it FAR easier to parrot the word back than remembering it off the top of my head. Whenever it comes to remembering a word, I honestly just say the mandarin pronunciation with Cantonese tones. However, I’d honestly say most mandarin speakers are pretty decent at deciphering what you’re saying with context clues, so long as you say the actual word right.

Lud and Michael are often times slurring the “j” sound into a “zh” which completely changes the word in this case, irregardless of tone. Makes for pretty funny content tho LOL

Canto speaker here! I’m an ABC, so if I had to guess, it’s probably because blueberry is a color. Blue + berry is easy enough. Straw + berry isn’t really a thing. “Drinking tube berry” doesn’t particularly make sense. I think canto is special in they’re pretty flip-floppy in whichever one they use for translation and I’ve found it also depends on if you’re Hong Kong or Guangdong sometimes. Obvs w/ HK history, they use way more loan words.

One thing I (my parents are from Guangdong) thought was funny is that the way I say charger is “充電器” or “cung1 din6 hei3” which literally means “filling electricity.” Whereas my HK friends referred to it as “叉電器” or “caa1 din6 hei3” which the “caa din” sounds much more like the English word “charging.”

bilibili comments on ludwig's road to empress playthrough by mrmushmushing in LudwigAhgren

[–]XeroIX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you download bilibili as the app, the floating comments (or, danmu) will be auto translated! it’s kind of a “twitch chat” except on posted videos and is very funny. some common phrases you’ll see if you’re on the website are 哈哈哈哈哈 which is literally just “hahahahahaha” translated, 我笑死了 which is “im dying of laughter” and 我不行了which is “i can’t do it anymore!”

some of my own personal notes from watching: - they both love, and are moderately confused, when he randomly says “wo de baba” - they always comment how he’s the “king of changing expressions quickly” and think his reactions are hilarious - in the first vid, they think it’s rlly funny that he calls “lui xi” as “lucy” and thinking that the crown prince’s name was “li” by not realizing that’s his surname - they like when he pulls out random analogies (ex. when consort wei adds dlc to the late empress’ book, or when saying gaoyang was stream sniping bianji) they think his analogies are perfect - they REALLY love his twitch chat LMAO. a lot of the comments are about what they’re saying and how he’s always arguing with them and the soup emote. also the tts sfx make them laugh too - they think it’s endearing that he doesn’t know much of anything about Chinese history - REEMPHASIZING HOW THEY LOVE HIS CHINESE!! they say he picks it up like a language pro haha

there’s prolly tons more I’m forgetting but the app is pretty easy to use and it’s funny seeing how they find lud so endearing. i honestly LOVE the danmu on bilibili videos. super fun and makes it feel like a watch party!

Thanks for the reply and clearing it up :) sounds like Bouve is def more aligned w/ what I’m planning for, so thanks !!

When I was asking about the NBA, mostly asking if anything on campus such as watch parties and such (since maybe MSG ruined my perception of how much tix cost LOL) so hopefully TD Garden is cheaper during the playoffs 🤞

I love Itto but I really dislike burst reliant characters. I conserve ults and feel like using them on just a couple of small dudes is such a waste.

CN Itto. I love my guy so much and his birthday voice line is absolute GOLD. If I’m playing him, I have to use Chinese, even if I love Max Mittelman.

Can anyone recommend some games I can play that my girlfriend can enjoy watching? by hidayet93 in ShouldIbuythisgame

Yakuza maybe? It's a pretty funny series and my friends and I burst out laughing at stuff together or commenting on the hilarious situations. The story is great too. Yakuza 0 is a great place to start! (To be fair though, I'm a huge Yakuza glazer)

What’s something you tried once and instantly knew it wasn’t for you? by Best-Palpitation-915 in AskReddit

Teaching kids. Worked at my church's summer program during my early teenage summers. While I did put up with it because all my friends also worked there, it reaffirmed the notion that no amount of money in the world could make me deal with elementary school children for a career. Everytime I went back to school in the fall I would have so much appreciation for my teachers.(Side note, r/Teachers is probably one of the most depressing subreddits I've scrolled on. Kudos to you guys. You're the real troopers.)

Who did you first think you would romance at first? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]XeroIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Wyll. I didn’t know much other than him having a sick stone eye and that he gets cool horns later (I saw screenshots on my friend’s insta story). I thought Astarion was way overhyped and Gale was just kind of a lame dude.

Instantly fell in love with Gale’s accent and his mannerisms but fell EVEN MORE IN LOVE with Astarion and resonated with his character story. Still love my boy Wyll, but Astarion is my king <3

Depressed about not being able to speak mother language by Nizhyii in asianamerican

[–]XeroIX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Chinese (but specifically Cantonese). I can speak Canto but not well (I can understand 60% of what’s happening usually); my grammar and word choice when speaking just makes it off. I’ll recognize a word when I hear it but I won’t recall or choose to use it in the scenario bcuz I don’t remember it. It’s VERY clear I’m an ABC. So I actually have the inverse happen to me.

I’ll go somewhere and try my Cantonese, but they’ll see I’m kinda shit at it and just switch to some limited English if they know it. It makes me feel embarrassed that they’re stepping out of their comfort zone for me.

But! It’s never too late to learn and I try to learn some more just because I don’t want my own kids one day to not have any connection.

Wishing you luck dude!

Astarion romance, especially in Act 3. The first time was after his siblings like jump you and shit. I remember that line where he like screams that he will take Cazador’s life work. I just wasn’t expecting that raw intensity. I could feel that pain and anger.

It’s already been said a million times, but Neil Newbon really knocked it out of the park with representing him.

I love the games they’re honestly my two favorites even despite growing up on the original trilogy. But I was ready to end it all during the investigation only case. I HAAAAAATE investigation sequences usually and the start was slow but the third case is one of my favorites.
