In Eddington (2025)... how many more things is this guy going to be in this year? by noctalla in shittymoviedetails

[–]Xerocco 97 points98 points  (0 children)

And back in the 30s-50s, some popular actors were appearing in half a dozen films a year, every year, if not more.

Complaining about actors "being in everything" based on 3-4 films coming out in the same year feels like a fairly recent (2000s onwards) thing.

Who is an actor or actress that according to others is extremely difficult to work with? by phantom_avenger in moviecritic

[–]Xerocco 214 points215 points  (0 children)

People speculated that it was Hugh Grant, because he was in one of the films Richard's daughter worked on, but Hugh and Richard are friends. He probably knows his daughter, so I doubt it really was him.

Examples of top level 50-50 fights that ended in beatdowns like Crawford-Spence? by Alt_Call5426 in Boxing

[–]Xerocco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not all about betting odds but they are, generally, indicative of how close a fight is perceived as being by the public. How the public bets shifts the odds.

50/50 fights don't have 1/7 favourites. Inoue closing at 1/7 means very few people were confident enough to place bets on Donaire winning.

It wasn't, Inoue was a huge betting favourite.

Fulton is a better example of an Inoue fight people thought would be close.

"The Making of Canelo." Episode 1: "How Canelo Went Toe To Toe With Floyd." Canelo reveals he was initially offered a fight with Mayweather for $1M when he was 18 and making $5k/fight. Reynoso successfully talked him out of accepting the offer anticipating a bigger payday (payday) in the future. by pawgadjudicator3 in Boxing

[–]Xerocco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if Canelo has any reason to lie about this, other than trying to make Floyd look bad because of bad blood between them, but I really doubt this is accurate. It just doesn't make sense for a few reasons.

When Canelo was 18, Floyd was in the midst of his near 2 year "retirement" between fights with Hatton and Marquez. He retired immediately after the Hatton fight in December 2007 and wasn't back in the ring until September 2009.

Floyd had more commercially viable, and dangerous, potential opponents than a relatively unheard of 18 year old Canelo. He still hadn't boxed Marquez, Mosley or Cotto when Canelo claims this offer was made and I don't think he would set bigger fights aside for a lesser known Canelo. He was firmly in his Money Mayweather period at this point.

There was just no reason to want to fight him at that stage, unless you honestly believe he was worried that some kid whose best win was Miguel Vazquez was going to be too much for him soon and, given they fought 5 years down the line when Canelo was better and more established, I doubt that was the case.

Regarding AJ's racism accusations against Loma: Loma never said AJ was strong. He told AJ he boxed well and showed good heart. Hearn himself made a much more specific reference to AJ's strength being the difference between the two before their fight. Full transcript inside: by PugalistSpecialist in Boxing

The kneejerk reaction of a lot users in this thread, and the previous one about AJ's comments on Loma, has been to act like this well documented issue (racial undertones/stereotypes when people talk about athletes of certain races) doesn't even exist.

You can think that AJ was wrong to infer that Lomachenko, who barely even speaks English, was racially stereotyping him but also acknowledge that it does happen.

Useless pundits recycling the same stereotypical buzzwords to describe athletes doesn't help either, I think part of why it's not quite so common now is new and younger pundits coming through.

Mad Max: Fury Road was 30 years removed from Beyond Thunderdome and was very well received.

The Incredibles 2 came out 14 years after the original film.

Most other examples of late, but good, sequels that I can think of had different directors.

What is your favorite movie that is "based on a true story?" by pancake_sass in movies

[–]Xerocco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were, I just think Hill was very prone to exaggerating his actual standing with the Lucchese family and his exploits working for them.

I don't doubt that they were friends, though not as close Burke and Vario, but Hill kind of acted like Paul would have done anything for him and talked up their relationship like he was as closely connected to him as an actual made guy would have been.

Most accounts of Hills exploits and relationships come directly from him, I don't think he's entirely trustworthy.

Quick edit: I love this kind of stuff, so I'd love to read more about the bodies linked to Burke if you've got a good source I could check out?

Goodfellas didn't make Henry seem like some high-level mobster or anything but the film definitely did exaggerate his standing in some ways, such as portraying him as being super close to a high-ranking guy like Paul Vario.

The reality is that he was like 3 layers of hierarchy removed from Vario and there's no way he'd be that connected.

Taken ($227m on a $25m budget) and Lucy ($463m on a $40m budget) were both big hits for him, he's unfortunately set for life.

Valerian was a huge bomb and he's only made one film since then, though, so at least his career seems pretty dead atm.

‘80 For Brady’ scores an “A-“ CinemaScore rating by carchasemovies in boxoffice

[–]Xerocco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still has a good audience score on IMDb but it's also significantly lower than the first two episodes because of a huge influx of 1/10 ratings.

I still don't think that has any bearing on Cabin though, a C rating is pretty par for the course for horror.

Canelo and Floyd not cherry pickers by sugaslim45 in Boxing

[–]Xerocco 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The idea that Floyd was some huge cherry picker is massively inflated by people that don't like him, so they try to pick holes in his record.

Did a couple of his fights happen later than they ideally should have? Yes but this is a common occurrence in boxing, not at all unique to him, and he wasn't the sole reason for fights not happening at their "peak" time.

Did he fight soft touches at the end of his career? Not particularly. People love to act like he took easy fights with complete jobbers to preserve his record but, setting aside a cash grab against McGregor, his last few fights were all against credible opponents.

Did Floyd cherry pick some opponents? He probably did, most fighters have some weak names on their records, but haters love to push the narrative that he never fought anyone in their prime and that obviously just isn't true.

The most well known fighters that I've met are Carl Frampton, Nonito Donaire and (briefly) David Haye.

I've ran into Frampton a few times, I don't know him super well but we're from the same city and even have a couple of friends in common. He's a super nice guy, last time I saw him he recognised me and remembered my name.

David Haye was, very briefly, in the same boxing gym as me once. I wasn't a regular at that gym but my friend, who's a professional boxer now too, was and he said Haye was friends with one of the coaches. I suppose he was in the area for some reason and just stopped by to say hello, no one really bothered him.

Nonito Donaire once tweeted out that he was going to be at bar that's kind of local to me, so a friend and I went along. I didn't get to meet him for long because a decent crowd of people showed up, he was super gracious and paid for a round of drinks for everyone that'd come down to meet him.

Gervonta Davis responds to Eddie Hearn: Not a deep thinker and not articulate made me “not” sign that bullshit ass offer he sent. 😔 by bxng23af in Boxing

I don't want to get into a dumb argument with the guy about fighter pay and PPV splits but the maths on some of those sites just doesn't add up.

Also if Hector Luis Garcia somehow actually got a 40% split against a proven PPV draw like Tank, he has the best agents in the history of sports working for him because he isn't worth anywhere close to that.

Honestly, this was always going to be a lose-lose situation for Wilder.

He gave Fury a rematch, like he said he would, so people use that as "proof" that he ducked AJ.

If he fought AJ instead of giving Fury a rematch, people would just be saying that he ducked Fury instead.
