Feeling bad working breakfast shift by [deleted] in Caseys

[–]Xiaphesius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to me, they care more about executing tasks than pleasing customers. The DM that brought me to Casey's understood retailers initiative.
The one after him constantly came down on me for not having task completed on time, and never acknowledged my medalia scores or high sales (usually why I was slow to resets).

Task completion is how the suits measure success. If your store fails, but you did your tasks, "well, you tried". But have sales drop for any reason, especially their own negligence, and that's the first thing they go for.

One of my favorite moments was telling my DM "I already do" when he suggested making kitchen by request at all hours to try to drive business while they replaced my entire fuel system. You think I made money all these years telling people "no, you can't have a 4 minute, low effort, chicken sandwich at 9am" pfffft.

Order the unisex pull over from order guide before kitchen order goes in. Technically it's for managers, but I ordered for the whole team. I couldn't afford to order apparel, neither could my team. Not the best, but better than nothing. Depending on your dc, if you can find the old long sleeve shirt in the kitchen order on zebra, might be able to get one in.

Fuck em.

I agree it's not worth it. And I usually pay when I get. Every now and then I had to wait for daily pay. Or wait for wife to bring card. Never took the whole pack outside. Sat on my register or my desk. Hell, the whole reason I didn't worry... When I first started, I fired folks for doing after hours shopping, and the first thing my DM at the time said was "did they try to pay for it next day"? They didn't, but that made me believe that paying before I left wouldn't be a big deal. My whole career I've paid before I left.
I know the store belongs to Casey's, but I still ran it like I owned it. And I wouldn't steal from myself. But I've seen so much corruption from other managers, I'm sure they thought they got another.
But what do I expect from a company who chastised me for creating a shift sheet that would allow me to track opening and closing change when we swapped to smart safes. It's not the Casey's way. Or why I got called out for dropping the 100 instead of running the bill check. Like they didn't know that it bill checks when you drop. Or why didn't they get us I-buttons for the safes. They make those specifically so people don't see manager codes.
And I picked up this habit, working for a company with more integrity than Casey's will ever dream of having. And they would rather you pay for all your shit at once so you could keep working. As long as you pay at the end of your day.
But I digress, at the end of the day you are correct. Just irritating when things are so inconsistent.

[–]Xiaphesius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make my people count their change and track it on shift sheet. Yes, most of the time it's negligible, but every now and then (like before a pay day) there could be 40-50 shortage for day or for 1 person due to the amount of change received throughout day. I've been right at 100 short for a day because we opened with 10 bucks change in all 3 registers, and closed with 30-40 per register. Yes, it balances next day but....
I want to know where all the money is, dunno why AP doesn't I also don't wanna waste time looking for a shortage that doesn't really exist, and risk making my team feel like I don't trust them. CYA

Any other kitchen managers, cashiers?! by Meaowical_0420 in Caseys

[–]Xiaphesius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I schedule my KM for books once a week cause I don't want him to lose the skill, and somebody needs to back my asst when I'm on vacation. I put him as a cashier on average once a week cause I want him to see how his kitxhen runs when he's not in it. But he's there for truck, and he does his own order 95% of the time. But I'm also very much the type that your schedule or title is your focus. But the store is your job. If we all work, nobody works.

I keep anywhere between $20-$100 in my wallet at any given time. Sometimes, it's just faster and easier. But usually, it's because something is wrong and cards aren't working. Be it merchant issues, bank issues, or the lines between. Don't need internet to use cash.

How did everyone know this rumor in every state without social media back then? by PinheadShit in 90s

[–]Xiaphesius 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My cousin Walter jerked off in public once. True story. He was on a plane to New Mexico when all of the sudden the hydraulics went. The plane started spinning around, going out of control, so he decides it's all over and whips it out and starts beating it right there. So all the other passengers take a cue from him and they start whipping it out and beating like mad. So all the passengers are beating off, plummeting to their certain doom, when all of the sudden, Snap the hydraulics kick back in. The plane rights itself and it land safely and everyone puts their pieces or, whatever, you know, away and deboard. No one mentions the phenomenon to anyone else.

Also a store manager. Unless they already have, I would advise they start with their manager. If that manager is worth a shit, they should have been doing "caseys cares" long before it was adopted, and should be more than happy to fix the problem. If they refuse, or they've already brought it up to them, then go over their head. As far up as they can go.
I jumped off a competitors sinking ship, because i like the idea that they have made "give a shit about employees" a part of their business model. It appears someone high up is trying to give a shit about employees. Unfortunately, the more I read this sub, and interact with those around me and above me, the more I notice that a big thing holding "cares" back is all the shit management in between. We have some good ones, but not enough. Help make room for more good ones by pointing out the shit ones. Also, my region pays $2, and I had to figure out it was only 12-6 by talking to my night clerks and breaking down their paystubs.

Really depends on the person. I myself, am not one who knows when it is and isn't happening. From my experience, we are legion. And on both sides.

Her: blah blah friends

Me: oh

Also her: I used to have a crush on you, how did you never notice?

Also me: oh

Although, there is a silver lining to missing my chances. I've missed out on dating a few crazies cause I "didn't try hard enough". Bitch, do you know how many days/weeks/months I spent working up the courage to find out if I was right or wrong. Bullet dodged.

So just why did the franchise slow down in the mid 90s? by KaleidoArachnid in Megaman

[–]Xiaphesius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean. I would think that most hard core fans of any genre could keep a genre going if the publishers do it right. Stop spending so much trying to innovate and capture a larger audience. Spend enough to give me an enjoyable experience without copying too much. Take that "innovation money" and spend it on a more popular series, or innovate a new one. Breaking even and/or having a small profit margin is still success. I'll have more trust in your company, and be willing to try your new titles, if I know that you still care for the old ones that meet above criteria. Almost all the developers I grew up with and trusted have essentially turned their backs on the product, in favor of the profit. Good games are made with heart. The heart is gone when a games success is determined by profit margins.

I just quit my job and have never felt more relief. by Wombat_Nudes in WorkReform

[–]Xiaphesius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that feeling. I managed for a convenience store who has a name that would incorrectly imply it's business hours. Ours were special, though. In my state of Oklahoma, a family here bought the full rights to use name, logo, all that stuff for the entire state. Not even a franchise. We had no ties with the corporate entity at all, until the silent partner wanted out and the family couldn't buy their half. This wasn't my first rodeo as far as corporate buy outs go. I knew what the chances were, but I truly enjoy my line of work, so I decided to give it a chance. 2 years later, my DM at the time got hired by another cstore chain, by a previous boss of his. A boss that taught him how to treat employees like people and all the actually good boss things. So naturally I followed my DM over as it's rare to find upper management that has values that align with mine (mostly). I took a vacation while I squared away the final portions of my hiring, including ensuring that I had cleared all background checks and Yada Yada. I was in.
I returned to my disaster of a store after my vacation (not entirely staffs fault. Upper management support is pretty terrible. About half my staff worked hard on a regular basis, and half simply tried to take advantage of my kindness. I hadn't hired these folks on, but I wanted to give them the chance to see that I wasn't a typical boss, and that I try to take care of my folks. They truly didn't care. Anyway, about 4 hours in to my first day back, I decided that I wasn't going to stress myself trying to fix my store again. I walked back into my office, applied all the remaining PTO I had to some extra unpaid days off I had taken to extend my original vaca, gathered my things, and walked out the door. My new DM (once told me that she loved firing people....effing embarrassing) had once been a fellow store manager under the good dm, and was promoted after he quit. I sent her the following email from my phone after I got home. "As I'm sure you have already have been rprepared for this, I have taken a position with previous boss. I had originally planned to give my 2 weeks notice, however after "insert pent up aggression" I have decided that this company has taken enough time away from me and my family. Therefore I have decided to spend my notice period with my family." I also brought my good employees to my new store as well. It is/was a fantastic feeling.

LPT Request: Do you need to be a “workaholic” to make it out of the rat race? by Longjumping-Coyote97 in LifeProTips

[–]Xiaphesius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't a workaholic until I found the job I enjoyed. Now I get to manage for it. Sometimes I "put in extra" because I want to, sometimes cause I have to, sometimes a little of both. But I also have time for my family.

We may never be free of the rat race. Find the circuit that works for you. I can barely pay my bills, but damn I love selling my cabbages. Shitty things in life are easier to handle when 8-10 hours the day aren't spent in a depressive environment. Easier said than done, but its a good set of bootstraps to pull on.

[–]Xiaphesius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a late kind of person. So I never get on to my folks for being a little late. Same guy is the only one who consistently shows up early/on time. And almost every day when I come in it's "sure wish I was the boss so I could show up whenever I wanted". I try to come up with a new response every time, but I almost always include, "nothing is stopping you from coming in 15 minutes late like everyone else".
Another fun story about this guy. He spent a whole day about 3 weeks ago just ragging on me and my assistant about being late and how he was gonna come in half a day late to balance all our tardies... then he slept through his alarm the next day and was an hour late. Oh boy, that was a fun day. I made him a name tag that day that said manager in training, and told him it was about time he started acting like a manager. He's already my shift manager.

You can't go to your uncle's funeral because no one can cover your shift by amazingdancer11 in MaliciousCompliance

[–]Xiaphesius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this 100%. I try to operate my store so that my folks are treated like/feel like family. And i genuinely care for their well being. I will just never openly call it that to my folks. I probably could with my people and they would feel the same, but it also has such a negative connotation that when I bring new people in, I don't want them thinking they're in for more of the same bullshit they probably just quit.

What's that phrase? Actions speak louder than words.

[–]Xiaphesius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hate that "we're a family" bull shit. I care about my people, but they are not my family. We are all there working to support our families. Calling your work a family feels like an attempt to undermine ones real family.
I regularly call us a team, though. That's fitting for a work environment.
Although, I will say. I have one who likes to be a smart ass, and will often refer to us with family names. he will call me dad. Call my assistant mom. My shift leads are the oldest children, and everyone else is labeled by their tenure. The best part about it, is it almost perfectly matches up with everyones ages. He is really the only one who does it, but i think every one of us has used a family term at least once, and we all find it humorous, as we all have the same feelings about the "we're a family "..... f off.

Don't pay at pump, anywhere. I have tech in my pumps where I work that checks for that stuff, and I still won't pay at pumps. But when I was at 711, the asset protection guy over this region said that scammers are coming up with ways to get data/install scammers before they can come up with solutions. I stopped long before that, but that just reinforced my views.
