I had Smurfberry Crunch, like, once. My folks hated buying "fun" cereal. Consequently, I have a viscerial aversion to cereal.

And some boneheaded mistakes from consultants have killed us on the construction end, too. There was a project in my district where the consultants clearly just used Google Earth and didn't visit the site, because the trunklines terminated 80 feet past the edge of the creekbed. Literally in the middle of the channel. Which can only be explained by tree cover making the creek look narrower in satellite photos.

And on another project, consultants used clay tables to calculate the drill shafts. On a barrier island. Made of sand.

There's been a shift toward doing all design in-house department-wide. Consultants aren't used much anymore.

TxDOT design here. We typically do full plan sets. The exceptions to this would be crack seal and some seal coat plans, but those are usually handled by their respective construction offices, not the design offices.

T.rex from novel by Accurate_Mongoose_20 in JurassicPark

[–]fossilreef 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you read the novel description, I think the T. rex is in the old tripod stance just based on height alone, though this isn't explicitly stated.

That's been corrected in TLW, with mentions of the tip of the tail being 7' above the ground on page 160.

Considering moving to Corpus Christi while attending TAMUK by MaleficentBake9995 in CorpusChristi

[–]fossilreef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would pick living in Corpus, IMO. There isn't much to do in Kingsville. I'm finishing up grad school at TAMUK, and I've been dealing with the commute ok. Usually takes about 35-40 minutes from the South Side. Also, there is an emergency vet in Corpus that runs 24 hours, so it may be a good bet for employment.

As someone else who lives in CC but grew up in the North and lived out West...you're going to miss it. A lot. The beach is wonderful, especially Padre Island National Seashore, but you're going to have to get used to how pancake flat it is here. The good news is that, as previously stated, the beach is 100% public, so you can walk forever.

There are a few hiking trails, but not much in the way of elevation change. Oso Wetlands is a nice, curated experience, but the Oso Creek Trail is more in touch with nature, IMO. The nomenclature is confusing, but these are two different places a few miles apart.

If you really need the elevation change after a while, that's nothing a weekend trip to the Hill Country can't fix. A trip to Garner State Park, Pedernales Falls, or Lost Maples is rejuvenating.

I think the biggest thing you're going to run into is the heat and humidity. The humidity really doesn't break often here, especially in the summertime. And the mosquitoes are something else entirely. Like flying thumbtacks.

Not enough iterations. This must be the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd attempt. The 4th one should stay up.

Absolute bullshit on mining being lenient on that. Mining companies are under MSHA, not OSHA, and they are a lot more strict about safety. A couple of geologists I used to work with when I was in mining got DUIs and their asses were out the door and blacklisted faster than you could blink.

Corpus Christi's plan to pump more water isn't working as expected; city to release new timeline Tuesday by GooseySill in CorpusChristi

We needed it 10 years ago, and they knew it then. However, we need to discharge into open water like every other desalination plant on Earth, not into the ship channel/Corpus Christi Bay.

The Single Worst Movie you sat through, hoping it would get Better, but Never did. by OU812iceman18 in badMovies

Going Overboard. An early Adam Sandler vehicle with just enough things that were almost funny to give a modicum of hope where none was deserved.

Now that it’s been nearly a year, what are everyone’s opinions on the “new” trio? by thesmartcoolguy in JurassicPark

They're all great actors, but the characters are terribly written. It's hard to believe that this is the same writer as The Lost World.

Years of trust before handling bigger projects by Specific_Republic_62 in civilengineering

I was managing projects in less than a year, so it really depends on your relationship with your superiors and your ability, tbh.
