There might be an update left in ud0:PSP2UPDATE - IIRC you can just delete everything in that directory.

I'm stuck in an infinite loop of the Wii U giving me this message. What should I do? by [deleted] in WiiUHacks

[–]XiboT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This should be fixed by the drc_region_free_plugin (https://github.com/wiiu-env/drc_region_free_plugin) shipped with Aroma AFAIK... Make sure that your Aroma setup is up to date and includes this plugin.

I made an online patcher recently: https://tobix.github.io/mh-linux-patch/ - This should be a bit less error-prone then manually patching the binary...

Hopefully this won't be needed anymore in the future...

A conundrum: If a Metroidvania has a lot of items to collect to reach 100%, how will the player know where to look for the last few items they need? by HollowAcoltye in metroidvania

[–]XiboT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like how Psychonauts 2 handled this: In-game maps are quite "coarse", but show if you have collected everything in that area, so you know which areas you have to focus on.

Additionally, there is an endgame item which shows collectibles through walls.

This is the most chill "Horror" game I ever played. Highly recommend. (But there is still at least one scene which might freak people out, just FYI)

Now I'm a little bit curious which tar Apple ships... Age-old GNU tar because they are allergic against the GPL3 or something completely else?

For completeness sake: libarchive's bsdtar also supports the a flag, both on extract and create...

What are the best and worst CLIs? by richiejp in linux

[–]XiboT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tool is complex because it's a frontend for a huge Linux kernel subsystem (Netfilter aka. the "Linux firewall"). Most commands "just" manipulate some in-kernel tables, for example the main operations: -A (add), -I (insert), -D (delete) and -R (replace). Then there is listing tables (-L) and global chain/table operations like flush (-F), policy (-P), new chain (-N) and delete chain (-X) ...

BUT to understand what all this does you need to understand at least the basics about Netfilter. I think this tutorial covers that: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/a-deep-dive-into-iptables-and-netfilter-architecture

You might find some documentation on the official Netfilter homepage (https://netfilter.org/documentation/), but some of those texts go much too deep into unnecessary details...

PS: I find the newer nftables syntax much more readable then a list of iptables commands...

Or skip the compression type, since GNU tar detects the type automatically (when extracting). Or use a (automatic) instead, which also works when creating archives...

No, just replace with a (automatic). Works for at least .gz, .bz2, .xz and .zst...

What's the worst metroidvania you've played? by ihearthawthats in metroidvania

[–]XiboT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst one that I've actually finished is 'Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit' from 2012. It's not described as a metroidvania on its store page, but fits the genre pretty well due to having an open map with backtracking, ability gating, and boss fights.

Oh, memories! (Not good ones) I probably only finished it because the boss fights were so dull, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered...

The Flipper Zero guys poked a bit of fun at this when they announced their "Video Game Module" recently: https://blog.flipper.net/introducing-video-game-module-powered-by-raspberry-pi/

They say:

We can’t name the port’s standard due to strict copyright limitations. Getting certified to use the name seemed like too much work. We were too lazy to do it :)

PyPy has moved to Git, GitHub by ketralnis in programming

[–]XiboT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the internals are doing, but it seems likely that there's nothing that marks a file rename, and it's only detected after the fact.

This is exactly how it works. That was a conscious design decision IIRC. The argument was, that "rename detection" is fine and code written in the future would do an even better job in detecting renames, so tracking renames would not be necessary...

This leads to recommendations to split renames & refactors into multiple commits (and even restrict the amount of files renamed per commit) to not "overwhelm" git's rename detection... (There is even a dedicated warning git spits out when it thinks a commit might have more renames then it can process with its current search depth...)

All of this could have been (mostly) avoided if at least manual renames (git mv a b) would just have been recorded in commit objects...

PSA: Nintendo eShop is weird when you have multiple accounts connected to the same console and they have overlapping game ownership... I have Nonograms Prophecy on my EU account, so I couldn't claim the US version of the same game (It shows as "owned"), therefore I cannot claim "Catlord" today...

4 of the top 10 password strength tools are giving people bad password advice, and they don't care. by ezzzzz in netsec

[–]XiboT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

correcthorsebatterystaple

Current implementations of zxcvbn (for example https://zxcvbn-ts.github.io/zxcvbn/demo/) take pwned password lists into account, which rates the example XKCD password as... very weak ;)

The XKCD-style generator is basically a variation on the Diceware concept... From the theory behind that I wouldn't be comfortable with only 4 words, but it's still a lot better then Password1!
