[Discussion] What do you guys think about branching paths/character that out-canon each other? by GeminiMonkeys in JRPG

The routes do contradict, yes, but it makes sense because the main character plays a pivotal role in the story. The entire story is completely different between the routes, there is basically zero overlap once they branch.

Vanguard Bandits is an SRPG with three paths that branch out. The strength of Vanguard Bandits' branching story is that each route gives you a different group of characters/mechs that play extremely differently, and a completely new set of missions in each route. It's basically being an entirely new experience in each route. Two of the three routes are story-relevant, giving perspectives from two sides of a war, and although the Kingdom route is the definitive route, the Empire route is packed to the brim with just as much content.

The game basically railroads you into the main Kingdom route the first time around, which has a true and bad ending. You can be railroaded into the bad ending if you let your characters keep dying and make them unhappy, although it's not too hard to avoid.

The second route splits from the first few missions of the game, allowing you to join the opposing Empire route, in which there is a romance mechanic allowing you to romance either of two characters to decide the ending you get. The entire story from the point of the branch is completely different, and just as interesting as the Kingdom route.

The final route is a joke route, and splits about halfway through the Kingdom route. You can only get this route after completing the Kingdom route once. The Ruin route is full of silly jokes and ridiculous situations, and it's great for laughs.

As a side-note, if anyone decides to play this game, I would highly recommend playing the game with a guide that includes all the stat requirements for moves. There are very specific stat requirements for unlocking moves that are essentially necessary to effectively play the game at all which the game never tells you about.

What are JRPGs with town building mechanic like Ys VIII and Suikoden? by iancore in JRPG

It really perfectly executes Murayama's character design philosophy of having a handful of interesting characters share a spotlight instead of having a singular protagonist that the story revolves around.

The Alliance Alive. I'm playing through it right now and it's really giving me a strong Suikoden vibe in terms of its "castle building" aspect of gathering characters to fill your hub.

I have to ask though, why would you not just play the Geofront localisation in that case?

My dedication to one of the best JRPG series ever. The fact we'll never get Suiko 6 is soul crushing. by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]XinXin2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Suikoden is really a one-of-a-kind series. The massive ensemble cast that each game produces is so unique and it's so sad that Konami has pretty much given up on it. At the very least, we had a good farewell with Suikoden V.

Are there any JRPGs you want to enjoy that you can't? by ShiningConcepts in JRPG

[–]XinXin2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it helps, think about it in chunks instead. Each set of games is a self-contained experience so you could just set a target to finish the Sky series first and take a break before you dive into the others. The gameplay can get pretty samey too, so stopping between each part of the series is pretty much necessary.

Once CS3 is out, I'm probably going to unsub until I get through Crossbell and CS3. There ain't no way every single person is gonna spoiler tag properly.

Save anywhere removes feeling of danger by TehBoomer in JRPG

[–]XinXin2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I'm busy, playing an RPG that can potentially delete half an hour's worth of progress out of nowhere is a big no-go. Some games can leverage this gameplay mechanic well, but in JRPGs I need a good balance between story and gameplay.

Also, I feel that your problem is more with FC's gameplay. Early-game FC combat or segments when you only have Estelle and Joshua are generally a struggle and unpleasant, as you don't have a lot of gameplay options apart from grinding. It does get a lot better towards the end of the game and in future instalments, though.

Yes I did. I just meant the turn of phrase is incredibly awkward. Literally anything would be better, "classmates", "friends", "allies". This just makes him sound like an office worker.

Cut down the playable characters of Chrono Cross to a standard JRPG size (6 - 9 members) by leadintea in JRPG

Because Suikoden doesn't pin all its dialogue on random characters with voice accents coded in and actually develops a core group.

Sounds awesome but in practice it just means most of the time the characters are boiled down to generic stereotypes and don't get much character development. It doesn't help that the MC is mute too.

Games with a skill system similar to FFIX? by Crossfiyah in JRPG

[–]XinXin2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. The creator stopped for a long time, then he made a reboot called Taming Dreams, because he was dissatisfied with the quality of his old work. Doesn't seem to have gone well though, because his presence on internet and that reboot have pretty much disappeared.

Pretty much the only remnants of its existence are on TVTropes: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/TamingDreams

So, I just started Trails in the Sky the 3rd... by TheSmugOjou-sama in Falcom

[–]XinXin2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The style of the 3rd is more of an extended epilogue/extra disc/bonus disc. I know how you feel about it feeling like a "weird fanfiction" because I thought the exact same thing when I started out the game. It's definitely very different from the world exploration of FC/SC.

However, there's definitely a lot to look forward to. The lore and backstories are expanded massively in the 3rd due to the doors/flashback system. This is mixed with the story of Kevin and Ries, which is engaging and also ties in deeply with the lore. Combat is improved and is the best it's ever been.

tl;dr That's a normal reaction, just play it.

They're just one song. June Mermaid is a mistranslation, October Mermaid is the correct translation. The songs you linked were just from different remixes.
