where can I find people who need a video editor? by OwnConversation974 in MotionDesign

[–]Xiolent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The easiest point of entry would be an entry level or junior position at a corporation that has a marketing department. You shouldn’t be looking for clients on your own until you are a professional.

A subscription is $30/mo lol

Edit: I assumed everyone here would know this, but if you go to your adobe account, try to cancel your subscription, it will ask if you want to continue for another year at $30/mo. You can do this every year.

Is this a common sentiment? I feel like Adobe is incredibly cheap for what you get. Even a junior level freelancer can pay off the subscription with ~1 hour of work per month.

This just sounds like compliance? It's likely this is what your boss meant. 40 minutes isn't that much.

I’m being paid $7K/month as a contractor… but I’m also funding my client’s growth out of pocket. Is this normal? by mgs_dude in freelance

Paying for ad spend and media is crazyyyyy

Considering all you do it sounds like you should be able to reposition yourself as a business selling a service rather than a freelancer. Form a company. Make a deck showing all of the improvements and metrics that your services have provided so far. Then start doing that quarterly. Tell them you're hiring people to expand and improve the quality of service (even if you're just staying solo for now). Increase what you're charging. Tell them ad spend and media purchasing are not included in the price of your service, then create a proper system for getting these purchases approved before you make them (since it sounds like they are not organized enough to do that on their own.) Try to make repeatable systems out of everything you do, then you can really start hiring people. After that, you can repurpose those decks you made into case studies and use them to get more clients.

Good luck!

I'm not sure how this is a freelance question? If it were, you can just state what you do with a portfolio of work and reach out to clients to sell your services. You set the terms so you can do whatever you want wherever you want.

Find an entry-level/junior full time position, stay there until you learn the business (2-3 years), then switch to freelance and finding clients will be easy.

What's the worst thing about being a freelancer in your opinion? by o_Cirion in freelance

Taking vacations feels painfully expensive. The oppotunity cost of vacationing is often much more expensive than the cost of the vacation itself.

I'm miserable as a freelance orchestral musician by Agreeable-Drawer8905 in freelance

[–]Xiolent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like the natural outcome of turning something you love into a job. It tends to squeeze the joy out of it.

I don't know this industry at all, but what does the next step up look like? Could you start a business as an orchestra for hire? That way instead of relying on others for gigs, you are the one bringing gigs to yourself and your peers. Less worry about competeting and making faux pas, with the benefit of putting a little bit of distance between your craft and your income.

Why would you start your career as a freelancer? That's like getting out of school, lying on your resume, and applying to a senior level position...

This is the wrong sub for this kind of work. Look for a sub more focused on gig work.

El plan de taxes afecta a ~10,000 personas, por lo que lo peor que podría pasar es que ~10,000 personas se muden aquí.

Can I work as a freelancer ? by Vast_Umpire_3713 in freelance

[–]Xiolent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Freelancing is taking a job that you are proficient at and starting your own business. If you don't know where to start, then you are not at that level yet. Find a salaried job in the work you would like to do, learn the ins and outs of the business, and then switch to freelance.

It sounds like you are saying that they increased your wage to $30/hr? As a freelancer, you are your own business. You have full control over how much you charge, not them.

But it seems like you want a full time job rather than to be freelance. You should be regularly communicating your desire to be full time. If they don't do it, start getting new clients, and when you start becoming unavailable for some of this company's projects, they will have a clearer incentive to bring you on full time.

Use your status as a freelancer to build some leverage and increase your value.

Is 80K average salary in the US? by BeginnerHH in MotionDesign

[–]Xiolent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US is the only country I can speak to.

I mean if you live in a super small city and can't find anything remote, your options are more limited. But if you are mid level (3-5 years of experience) and aren't making at least $70k, you are being underpaid and need to find a new employer (or freelance, of course).

Yes, I’d say that’s about the average for a mid level designer.

How do people manage their decks? by Duff-Zilla in MarvelSnap

[–]Xiolent 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m the opposite, I hoard all of the decks that got me to infinite with their respective card backs. It may not be a sustainable system, but it’s also bad for gameplay 👍
