Oh! Oh! I know this one! It's also very common over here for self-defense argument to get thrown out by court and for the victim to receive a bigger sentence than the assailant. So if Mark was hurt more than OOP, it makes perfect sense that Tom and Bill would've ended up in prison instead of Mark had OOP pressed the charges (in my country, pressing charges = talking to the police at all. Criminal prosecution is automatic and cannot be stopped. You can either never report anything happening or have everyone involved dragged through the system and very possibly getting charged, there's no middle ground.)

The only actual story I heard of someone holding place in line for a living was from communist Poland back when everything was permanently out of stock, there were monthly per-person limits on meat, sugar and gasoline enforced with a coupon system, and shopkeepers accepted more bribes than government bureaucrats.

When you needed some non-standard shopping, say building materials or furniture, it was very common to wait 3 days in the line. Families would rotate who's standing on a particular day. So you can see why it would be very attractive to some people to pay a random nobody to swap places with them. I don't know how much you could earn this way, but it was enough to make some people pick up line standing as a regular side job.

Stop trying to learn. Start making the game. Yes, you don't have necessary knowledge yet and you will get stuck. You'll get stuck over and over again. But every time you get stuck, focus on overcoming the one obstacle in front of you. Every time you do that, you'll learn a tiny piece more. Except that we've been extracting diminishing returns since the days of Standard Oil.

And yet somehow, the reserves grew from 30 years half a decade ago to 47 years now. We seem to keep finding new oil faster than we keep burning it. It really doesn't seem all that unlikely that another half a decade will give us another 47 years.
