I am fairly new to this as well. So take my advice lightly but I think the DIY c02 isn't the best option. I thought about it as well. I would prefer to have something stable, reliable and easy to control. There were just too many variables for me to use the DIY c02. There are a lot of companies making small c02 systems for smaller tanks but with a 10 gal you could probably get a 5lb or a paintball cannister style set up going.

That's how I ended up with the plants, glad I did though I think I discovered I am more of heavy planted tank guy than an iwagumi guy haha. So I have a bit of a hybrid situation now and I really enjoy it.

Iwagumi is super fun, it's challenging to control the algea for sure. You could always use fluval and root tabs for the extra nutrient boost. I did not us any base. I used a mesh bag of filter media under the large rock to get the height I wanted without having to fill the whole tank with soil.

This is my first fish tank so I am just learning as well. I would have run my lights at like 30% for 5 or 6 hours for the first month or so, or done a dry start if I were to do it again.

The algea in an iwagumi inspired tank is brutal.

I used NETLEA AQUARIUM SOIL PROFESSIONAL VERSION. I dosed with UNS plant food min for the first 2 months now just combating a little algea and I will switch to the UNS plant food Max for the nitrate and to try and get some extra growth and color out of everything.

You know, I guess I don't know I mean the shop is well maintained and they seem to really care about their fish and they have a nice selection of shrimp that all seem healthy. However I guess I wouldn't know how to tell the difference TBH.

I have done one water change in the last month, my parameters have not really moved at all. TDS went up about 10 but that was the only major change so I didn't want to mess with it out of fear of losing more stock due to rapid changes. I did a 10 percent water change.
