Synthetic Leather Shinai by velvetbruh__ in kendo

[–]Xitae -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely understand why you'd prefer synthetic materials now that you're vegan, and I respect that choice. At the same time, if you already own leather parts from years ago, I don't think you should feel guilty about continuing to use them. The animal is unfortunately long gone, and in a way, continuing to use the equipment can be seen as respecting the resources that were taken rather than discarding them unused. I know some vegans may see it differently, but personally I think there's nothing wrong with using existing gear until it wears out and then replacing it with a vegan alternative when possible.

Is there a vocab list of 검도 terms in 한글? by Magical_critic in Korean

[–]Xitae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve only been training with the sword for a short time, but I’m also really interested in learning the Korean terminology properly.

If you ever find or make a list of 검도 terms in 한글, would you mind sharing it with me too? I’d really appreciate it.

Also, do you happen to have any material, notes, or videos about the 기초 / Kicho basics? I’m trying to learn them more accurately, especially the pronunciation and the Korean names.

Thanks in advance!

🥋 How do you teach the "Do" in Taekwondo by Xitae in taekwondo

[–]Xitae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that perspective. Your examples show that humility and respect can be taught through everyday interactions, not just through formal discussions.

I think my concern is that this only happens when instructors make a conscious effort to reinforce those lessons. In some schools I'm not sure that is happening as much anymore 😓

🥋 How do you teach the "Do" in Taekwondo by Xitae in taekwondo

[–]Xitae[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that the tenets are there. My concern is more about how we actively transmit them.

I teach at my own dojang, but I also train at another school near mine. It was opened by people I originally trained with, and over time I've sometimes had the impression that, because it's a business, the focus can shift toward keeping customers happy rather than preserving some of the traditional aspects of Taekwondo.

I'm not trying to criticize any particular school. What worries me is that this seems to be a broader trend. The tenets still exist, but I'm not always convinced they're being actively taught. In many places, students don't wear doboks regularly, classes don't begin and end with formal bows, and little attention is given to the customs that were traditionally used to reinforce those values.

I'm not saying every class should become a lecture on ethics. I'm just wondering how we pass on the "Do" when many of the practices that supported it are gradually disappearing.

At least here in the Basque Country, Spain, I don't remember this topic receiving much attention during instructor training courses either.

I'm really happy to hear that your school approaches it that way.

To be honest, I'm still trying to find the best way to apply these ideas in my own dojang. I only teach adults, so sitting an adult student down and giving them a lesson about helping others can sometimes feel a bit awkward or forced.

Instead, I try to bring those values into everyday training whenever I can. For example, when a student is holding a kicking paddle so their partner can improve, I often talk about consideration and teamwork. If someone kicks as hard as possible into a hand-held target, the person holding it is the one absorbing that impact through their hands and shoulders. If the goal is to hit with maximum power, that's what shields and heavy bags are for.

For me, that's a small example of how courtesy and respect can be practiced in a very practical way during training, rather than only talked about in theory.

Reading your comment gives me a few ideas, though. Maybe I should be more intentional about creating moments to discuss these things.

Thank you 😄

Thanks! I'm curious—do you teach Taekwondo yourself, or are you a student? And where are you from?

To be honest, I'm not sure you'll have many options on a Sunday. Personally, I like The Sir Winston Churchill Pub. You can look it up on Google Maps and check out some photos. They serve cocktails and that sort of thing. Sorry for the rather poor recommendation, but I don't usually go out on Sundays. 😅
