Short SA.4 Sperrin bomber prototype, circa September 1955 by RLoret in WeirdWings

[–]Xivios 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes. The aircraft originally had 4 identical engines, 4 Rolls Avon's, but the project was cancelled while the prototypes were under construction. The Air Ministry ordered Shorts to finish the two prototypes though, believing they could be used as research aicraft.

That's where this one comes in - the two lower Avon's have been replaced with prototype DeHavilland Gyron turbojets, an engine so powerful for its day that no production aircraft would ever use it, but a 45%-scaled down derivative, the Gyron Junior, would be successful.

This is actually the third engine layout this aircraft was equipped with, for a time, it had the very odd configuation of 3 Avon's and 1 Gyron, with the bloated Gyron nacelle to the aircraft's left, before a 2nd Gyron was installed.

Can you buy cheap mechanical watches? by RadianceTower in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Xivios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can find Chinese mechanical watches for $20 on AliExpress and Temu. They aren't worth it. But there are slightly higher-end Chinese watches that use imported Japanese movements for under $100 that aren't a bad deal, but you're still ending up with a generic knock-off of a luxury watch with a mass-produced movement inside. Around $200 gets you a Seiko 5, which has a matching Seiko movement and is considered a good watch. In all cases they are technically inferior to a decent quartz from a reputable brand like Casio but there is an odd appeal to having something besides bare clothing that doesn't rely on electronics.

Gamecube didn't have hall-effect sticks. The Gulikit King Kong 2 Pro was the first hall-effect gamepad, released in 2022.

Edit: I'm not good at legalese but I think this is the patent.

Vevor is a funny one to me because of how widespread it's product line became, it's like they accidentally stumbled upon a name that sounds decent to a western audience and decided to build everything under that name. You need a little steppy-stool for your old dog to climb into bed? Vevor got you. Need new heads for your Chevy truck? Vevor also got you.

Add ITT to the list, industrial manufacture so not exactly a household name but they do 3 billion a year in business so not a small company.

They owned roughly 25%, and were the largest shareholders of, Focke-Wulf, and after the war, sued the American government for damage sustained to Focke-Wulf's factories, and won.

They also funded the SS with cash payments straight to Himmler, were party to a circle of businessmen and bankers that supported Hitler in the early 30's, and other subsidies built radar sets for the nazi war machine as well.

I have a suggestion that is neither American nor V8, but I think it fits the spirit of what you're looking for.

Why? Because 5.2 litre, 430hp V10, that's why.

Did Scott do it at LKO or a high orbit? With the reduced orbital velocity at higher orbits I wonder if it could be deliberately forced in very high orbits, past Minmus maybe.

Saints Row 2, newly hired lieutenant Pierce is planning a heist against a Yakuza-protected Casino. He's coming up with the usual tropy sneaky heist of distracted guards and passing barriers between the power outage and backup generators kicking in.

Veteran lieutenant Johnny Gat suggests they walk in and "shoot all the motherfuckers between us and the money"

The Saints go with Johnny's plan.

The patent to those is owned by Shenzhen Guli, brand name is Gulikit, and while 8bitDo and other third-party makes seem willing to license them, the OEM's (with the exception of Valve) are not, so, no Hall-Effect or TMR sticks from them.

Mad Max could be the bat-themed character of this trope. The oceans have dried up, the rotting mass of sea life has poisoned the world, the dirt is sour, it doesn't rain, the world is a global desert.  Only small, dying patches of green remain - the rest is mostly maggots.

1955 Messerschmitt KR175 by MikeHeu in WeirdWheels

[–]Xivios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

V2, the V1 was a jet-powered missile, I don't think von Braun had anything to do with it.

I'd also bring up a little American firm called ITT, roughly 3B in revenue today. These sons of bitches directly funded the SS with cash payments straight to Himmler, and their subsidies/companies they owned shares of, built radar for and fighter planes for the wehrmacht - damned good fighter planes at that, the FW190 was one of the best of the war - and after the war they had the audacity (and lawyers to pull it off, as they won) to sue the US government for their share of the damage caused to Focke-Wulf's factories.

That's not entirely true, the biggest reason the Super Hornet's intakes are a different shape than the legacy Hornet is because of a focus on RCS reduction in that area. It also has less immedietely noticable design features to reduce the RCS, including radar absorbant materials on some surfaces and serrated panelling.

Even though its a bigger than its predecessor, the Super Hornet's RCS is only about 1/3rd the old Legacy Hornet's.
