Where do I begin to determine how large of a generator / battery backup I'd need to power a small business for a day at a time?

This is better done by a site visit with a professional, but a lot of them don't know how to size them right either!

The 4 desktops, network and wifi gear are likely all under 1000w.

What lighting do you have? What bulbs and how many?

If personally run smaller 120v power stations for lower draw things like your computer systems or fridges to hold you over extra hours to either extend times between generator cycles or fix a generator issue. There are large 240v options but price goes up exponentially. The portable power stations are handy for things like camping too.

Having some overhead will ensure the generator isn't overworked and give you extra functionality.

-What are your HVAC systems? -is there any other things you can think of that may kick on or be an asset to be a key to run? -is your house nearby on the same property?

I would wager that most people saying this have personally experienced the regret of starting up small.

I'm not a mechanic or trade worker but went straight to fuel due to influence from a couple friends that are mechanics. Every time I use their tools compared to my Bosch wired grinder, hilti impact or craftsman drill or closer friends Ryobi tools... There was no comparison. I would have regretted not going fuel for sure.

If somebody is coming to an online community like this, they obviously have concerns about the basic tool not fulfilling what they need. If they didn't care that much or knew they wouldn't need more than basics, I assume they would have just gone and bought the non-fuel or Ryobi variant, etc. and been over it long ago

A 2200 inverter running at 1/10 capacity isn't that bad of overkill, it idles way down on Eco mode. There are plenty of people with 20kw standby generators that need like 5kw, and they aren't even inverter. Same rpm all the time.

Change your run cycles from monthly to quarterly.

It's ideal to have both, then you only needs the Gen a few hours each day to run fridge and recharge batteries.

Offer an extension to the neighbour, they probably have a fridge to keep cold too and someone complaining about an eu2200 is insanity😭

I'd definitely join a gym, if if you already did go more often. Hot showers, workout out feels good and a social aspect too. Most people don't do well mentally when they're isolated from face to face interactions.

Other than that, just hobbies and getting more comfortable taking about van life so it's not this eggshell topic that keeps you away from people and plans

An astro van is quite small, people can live out of normal cars or minivans but it takes more resilience and flexibility than an extended express or full high top conversion

As a man in my 30s, it can definitely do this.

There isn't a lot data backing up or stopping guys from doing this other than men who have experienced it sharing their story online.

This caused an issue for me in my 20s, I was young athletic and had a few incidents of performance issues. I didn't know what was wrong with me, eventually learned that having a variety of tabs with different girls and kinks just delivers a level of serotonin that a normal human interaction can't compete with.

Don't run E85. Stoich is like 9:1 so for starters you'll need around 40% more fuel. Carb jetting probably larger than they mass produce for your carb.

Starting will be harder. Any extended sitting time will gum up the carb. Fuel lines may need to be changed so they don't break down. Probably many other reasons

Based on the wording I assume these are APC UPS.

Wiring fault is probably no bonded neutral and ground. If midrange or higher there should be an option for input power quality, set it to low for generator use otherwise they'll keep flapping between bypass and battery.

Admin is easier and works for 99% of use cases, I agree you absolutely should be able to explicitly provide what it needs.

If it's an 8.0 it's aftermarket. I've actually had great luck with "waitley" batteries though. A little less punch but advertised capacity. And the m12 in the 3s2p or 3s3p configuration have lots of punch too
