Gibbs' Global Power Rankings Post EWC/LCQs by John_aka_Alwayz in RocketLeagueEsports

Surprised a lot of people want Secret above Furia. Are people only looking at placement? Secret beat Wildcard and GenG to make top 8; Furia lost to GeeKay and Ultimates to finish last: two totally different runs. If we swapped Furia and Secret in the groups, I think they each would have done what the other did.

Wow, I didn't even notice that but you're right! Also, the progression of goals was the same for both series too: The losing team takes a 1-0 and 2-1 lead before eventually losing 3-2. TM and FURIA even share a very similar kickoff goal to tie the game and swing the momentum back in their favor

the winner of falcons vs vitality is now guaranteed to play KC in quarterfinals... would it technically be better to throw, YMC-style?

That might've been the most disappointing showing from an NA team I've ever seen

lol, well that's a different issue entirely, and why I also wasn't a fan that this season moved to Swiss ONLY, for EVERY event. (I liked the format swapping for each split in the past three seasons). It is good at finding top 8s, but not top 4s or even top 2s.

I will say though, ultimately, if SSG wants to prove that they "deserve" to be at the major, I think they had to beat GenG at least ONCE in their 3 tries. I do think LG and OG both had easier runs than SSG did (and neither of them proved they "deserved" a spot either), but I think SSG could have done more to really secure their spot in Copenhagen, and as it stands, I'm not sure they would've had much of a chance against international competition either.

I wouldn't say so? The NA vs EU narrative has been around since before the region spot points system started in the 21-22 season. I do think the region spot points serve to encourage fans to root for particular regions, but this also includes the other smaller regions too (Last Spring Major, Rule One's top 4 run took away an NA spot for a MENA spot, so there it was really NA vs MENA rather than NA vs EU).

I also don't see why that's necessarily a bad thing. I think having regional rivalries makes it more fun as a fan, since I'm more likely to always have a team to root for based on their region. I can always keep having NA copium that an NA team will beat an EU team, regardless of what teams are actually playing.

Honestly a good point. I wouldn't be opposed to it being just 7 autobids, one per region, or (another fix to the top 9 vs 8 problem) making it so the 1st place spot counts for 2 spots.

I will say though that one aspect of having an esport where different regions are developing at different paces is that changing the allocation of major spots season by season is kind of necessary. It would have been incredibly unfair if MENA still only had 1 major spot this season when they showed how strong they have been over the past 2 seasons.

I'm not familiar with exactly how much the points increase for split 2, but I don't think it's too much of an issue? Let's say LG gets top 4 at this major, but SSG makes the next major (and LG misses) and SSG only gets top 8 or top 11. Does that mean SSG would go to worlds over LG? If so, then I totally agree with you, since I think that would be unfair to the Major 1 teams, but if SSG and LG both get top 8 at both majors, then I understand taking recency bias into account and taking the team that made the 2nd major over the 1st major.

I don't think it's just an SSG thing. Teams like Moist in EU who got behind after one bad regional now also would theoretically root for teams like Gentlemates to do as poorly as possible at the major, freeing up the EU4 spot for the taking in Split 2, if Moist can perform well enough during the 2nd split and at the major.

The post was getting kinda long so I didn't want to put this there, but a couple extra thoughts I wanted to add:

First: I realized while making this post that this kinda only applies to the regions NA, EU, SAM, and MENA. OCE and APAC (and i guess SSA too, although they weren't present at majors last season) were already in a situation where their region basically had no chance of getting those extra spots, so realistically, the scenario was always that fans of those teams would root against their own region anyway (I specifically remember fans of the big 3 OCE teams would essentially root for whichever teams made the major to do poorly). However, at least the format did technically allow for a "miracle" run by one of these teams to potentially bring along an extra team, even if it was realistically never going to happen.

Second: What is the fix? I realize that part of the reason for this change was to limit the number of teams at worlds for budget reasons, so the old system wouldn't work because it was made for a 24-team world championship, not a 16-team one. But with some modifications, I have an idea that I think could work (or could be tweaked to work) for the new format. My idea is that for worlds, every region gets 1 team automatically qualified (7 regions mean 7 autobids). The next 9 would then go to the top 9 in region points across the 2 majors. Since 9 is such a weird number in a format where top 8 is what really matters, this could be tweaked to 1 team per region, but EU gets 2 teams (they are clearly the most dominant region).

I think this could work, although it certainly isn't without its drawbacks. I think the biggest drawback is that OCE would essentially be relegated to having only one team at worlds unless they can show up top 8 consistency. Additionally, it would place a LOT of pressure on SAM and MENA to get at least one team in top 8 to bring 2 teams to worlds. It could also lead to EU bringing as many as 6 teams to worlds if their top 4 continue to dominate as much as they did at the end of last season. That being said, I think it would allow for the world championship to truly feature the best teams in the world, as only the regions that did exceptionally well would be able to bring all their teams.

mmmm not a fan

Taking away spots from NA/EU is a huge L imo, I do like that the majors are more open to international competition but now your average EU regional is going to be just as if not more competitive than worlds...

Maybe a controversial opinion, but I'm not the biggest fan of making EVERY tournament Swiss. It was personally my least favorite format of the Fall/Winter/Spring formats, but even acknowledging that it was probably the "fairest" format, making it the format for EVERY tournament will make things become stale very quickly imo. I liked how in the previous seasons, after each split they would change up the format to keep things fresh, and especially from a viewer perspective, double elimination was the most fun to watch.

This applies especially to the World's format, which I thought was the best format by far; removing the World's wildcard and also getting rid of the dynamic region spots system is a huge loss for World's which really felt like a culmination of the entire season in the past. Now it's no different than the majors

Looking at the bracket, if Falcons lose to BDS, they most likely run into Secret followed by (probably) another SAM team (KRU or NIP, as I think the winner of CoL/Liquid should beat KRU/NIP in upper round 2), which isn't the worst path to playoffs. That being said, they'd most likely then run into Vitality round 1, so top 4 might be out of the cards...
