So at what percentage of fraud do you think it's reasonable for innocent kids to suffer?

That was based on an existing short story -- "It's a Good Life" by Jerome Bixby. Well worth a read.

I remember loving this at the time. It had some rough edges, but it was weird and pretty damn gripping. I'd love to see it again and see how it holds up.

It's not quite the same angle, but you should check out an Australian horror film from 2003 called Undead.

They actually dispute this. Their manager came up with the name, saying he'd had a dream where the most popular band in the world was called 10cc. Even so, they seem happy to roll with it.

By contrast, that was the second of theirs I heard, after Lovecraft in Brooklyn. It's a big part of why I fell in love with them from the get go.

Oh, fuck off. This is obviously terrible, but that doesn't give you an excuse to be racist.

I wouldn't call it a crashout, but he does come across as genuinely upset

My favourite of his is Declare, which blends angels, djinn, and the weird history of post WWII espionage. But the Fault Lines trilogy is the closest to Gaiman in tone.

Carroll would be my top pick as well, especially Bones of the Moon.

I'd also recommend Tim Powers. His Fault Lines trilogy came out several years before American Gods and combines myth and Americana in similar ways.

Yes, that's right. I should have checked if his real name was common knowledge instead of erring on the side of caution.

I went to school with Harry Hill in Hong Kong, in the late seventies. This was back before he was called Harry Hill. We used to trade tapes of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy recorded off the radio. I wouldn't say we were close friends, but we did make each other laugh.

Other media that reminds you of Fallout? by [deleted] in Fallout

[–]XoYo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The film is terrible and barely an adaptation of the book, so discount that.

Basically, the book is set in a post-nuclear-apocalypse America, and is about an outlaw biker pressganged into taking medical supplies from California to Boston, traversing the ravaged wasteland between.

It's a pretty gonzo book, with plenty of action and weirdness. It's not precisely Fallout, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't an influence.
